Gnomies Gone Wild

WHOOOHOO for plane tickets to Orlando!! I have to use my voucher soon and it has Orlando written all over it!!!

Santa brought me some Disney money and gift cards so I can't complain!! Okay so I have decided that while it might be scroogish not to decorate...I don't miss the cleanup one bit LOL!!!!!! How is that for looking on the bright side LOL!

Hello Gnomies!

C, I have a question for you. You have a kindle, right? Do you like it?

Yes, I do. LOVE it. Best thing EVER. I am a big reader and was worried I couldn't be able to curl up w/ it and lose myself in a book but I find that I still can. In fact I was curled up w/ my Kindle in the WL lobby! I don't miss page turning at all! Although I will say the clicking can be a bit loud when everything else is silent and someone is trying to sleep next to you.

It's great in the sunlight - no glare. I've had it at the beach and pool - although you do have to be careful about sand/water etc.

Love that it holds so many books (~1,500, I think?) and you can archive more on the amazon website.

One of my favorite features is that you can download the first chapter of any book available on Kindle for FREE. It's a great way to try a book and see if you like it and I also use it as my "wish list" so if I hear about a book I'll download the first chapter and then when I'm looking for something new to read, will give different ones a try and see what one I get into.

Books are generally 9.99 (vs. ~20 for a hardcover).

Especially love it on vacation when I take one little thing with tons of books instead of a pile of books that I'd usually go through. One downside is that *technically* as an electronic device you aren't supposed to be reading it during takeoff and landing. :rolleyes1

There have been some articles lately that publishers aren't very excited about this new technology and some (like Stephen King most recently) have delayed making their book available on Kindle to try to push people toward the hard cover. I haven't found there is anything I have to read that urgently (now that Harry Potter is done... speaking of which, JK Rowling hasn't allowed her books to go on Kindle).

That may be more than you wanted to know... if you have any other questions, let me know! I definitely love mine!

How are the gnomies? What was under your trees?

I really really really want one. I have so many books and the storage issue is getting to be a big problem. I can't part with my books but I can't keep adding to them either or I'm going to have a huge problem.

I love that the books are cheaper than buying a hardcover and the ease of just being able to worry about that one thing instead of multiple books.

I'm so tempted to buy one but I keep telling myself I'm going to Disney in 17 days so it may not be the smartest thing money wise. :rotfl2: But it would be so nice to take to Disney.....:rolleyes1

Storage was a big issue for me too. Not to enable further but you can also subscribe to newspapers, magazines and blogs on the kindle too. Not so good with pictures (black & white only).

Would you do a lot of reading in Disney?

I usually read on the plane and at night. On my solo day, I can see myself picking a resort lobby, reading and taking a break that way. I really want one. It kills me too because I know I'm getting a bonus in January. I just don't want to wait. :rolleyes1

Well, if you know the bonus coming in January and this is how you've agreed to spend it, I wouldn't think purchasing a wee bit early to take on your trip would be bad. I'll just caution you on how easy and addictive purchasing the books can be... $9.99 can add up. :rolleyes1

Anyone have any super exciting New Year's Eve plans? I do not and am looking to live vicariously.

Oh my goodness, I am dying to buy one. I'm going to wait and at least talk to Marc first tonight.

I have zero plans for New Year's Eve. I want to do something but I don't even know what it would be.

Hi Stace!! It's an electronic book reader.

LL...not taking away from the Kindle.... but did you also look at the Sony Reader and the Nook??

I got a Nook for Xmas...(I'm still waiting for it...it ships Jan 4th). I did a side by side by side comparison of the 3 and ended up ranking them as Nook, Sony, then Kindle.

A couple big extras with Sony and Nook.... you can use an SD card and expand the memory to a ridiculous 17K books! And they both have agreements with Google so you can download tons of books (like the classics) for free.

Nook will also let you 'lend and borrow' books with friends. And has a seperate color screen.... but from what I understand, uploads slower than the Kindle (maybe because of the color???)

The Kindle is the original...and has been well road tested. But the extra features...for the same price....makes the other 2 worth checking out if you haven't!

One of my co-workers has the Sony and absolutely loves it too.

Stacy!

I already knew about your spring trip (you know, the one where I will miss you by 1 stinking day :sad1:) but now I see a second ticker :confused3

Yes, Stace, do tell about the tickers!!

Hey Ladies!

My family that moved in with me (so my auntie, 2 cousins and my cousin's DBF), and my family from Indiana (1 Auntie, 4 cousins) are gonna go on a little trippie in October 2010! I've never been with a big group so it should prove to be interesting! I am the assigned planner and researcher! So far I'm thinking on those Treehouse Villas! I don't know if we'll fit though!

Anyhow Katie - you never know, my mum and I might change our dates by a couple days depending on my work situation. I'm just glad you're going at all - you deserve a nice trip!:goodvibes

I haven't really looked at the nook or the sony one. I'm going to wait anyways. I was being too impulsive yesterday.

Stace! Congrats on the two trips!! You should go later in October, I know a few DISers that will be there then. :rolleyes1

I will secretly hold out hope that you move your dates and we get to meet

I adore the treehouse villas! Maybe someday I will get to stay there. Disney says they sleep 9 but that is with 3 sleeping on pullouts in the living area which doesn't sound very nice unless they are all kids.

When I was there with my entire family, I was very glad we rented a house offsite. Don't get me wrong, I loved staying onsite when it was the 4 of us but the extra space of the house made it so much easier to have everyone near each other but not sitting on top of each other. The kids were able to play in one room and the adults in the next room and everyone had their own bedroom so we never felt like we were in each others space. (and honestly, the price of a 3 or 4 bedroom house is very low compared to 3 or 4 rooms at Disney)

Hey girlies!!! Love all this talk about Kindles and whatnot....I am fascinated by the idea of having one, but have no time to read anymore....which is so sad and pathetic!!! I really do miss it!

So many of you have some fun and exciting trips coming up....or just returning home from! SO excited for all of you! I think that is the best way to ring in the holidays and the New Year....visions of Disney dancing in our heads!!!

I too received a pin code email, but have not been able to use it...yet.....it is killing me! It is just not right to have a pin code, and not be able to plan a trip! ;) We are having a really hard time right now trying to figure out all our vacation plans for the year---due to Tom's job, he can't take any vacation from Jan-April, and with the fact that Megs is starting first grade next year (all day school) and the possibility that I may be going back to teach since she won't be home with me, trying to find time to go is hard....we are pretty much left looking at some of the busiest weeks of the year....not something we are very thrilled about doing AT ALL!!! We have tossed around the idea of heading west and meeting up with our friends from Kansas City out in CA this summer and visiting DL together. I have never been there, so I have no idea if this is a crazy idea or not? Would it be insanely crowded? Does anyone know what the weather is like there?!?!?! Just wondering!!!

So glad to be back chatting it up with you lovely ladies!!!! Happy New Year!

Oh sweetie.....how I have missed you all too!!! Even though life has gotten in the way of my DISing (shame on life!), I still warmly think about you all throughout my days! I hope that you are all well and either enjoying many wonderful trips to WDW or at least planning them---:goodvibes because we know that is half the fun!!! I have enjoyed reading about so many of the October trips....so jealous for those of you who have gotten to spend even 5 minutes in the World together! I dream about how wonderfully delicious and joyous it would be if I could find a way to gather you all up in one spot--Disney or not--to just have a good 'ole Girlie Chat fest!!! Right now it is a dream for me, but I always hope one day it will come true!!! I think the world of you all.....and always think of you all while in the World.....did you see your Shout Out and picture tribute in the Epcot update on my TR???? Thinking of you all always!
