Gnats at POP!!!

We are staying at POP 8/23-8/30/16 and were wondering if anyone had problems with gnats at POP? We stayed in the 50's section 5 years ago near the lake and the gnats were at our room door so every time we opened the door to get in or out they got into our room. We loved our stay except for that problem and hope it was just a freak thing.

It didn't seem like we saw them in other places at the resort so we're wondering was it because we were lakeside? This time we requested to face a parking lot with our standard view room hoping it makes a difference.

Any help from the POP vets would be great.

We've stayed at Pop the last two weeks of August for the past four years, twice we've had Lakeside rooms (in the 60's). We've never seen any gnats. Enjoy!

Dl99, it's a long story. We ended up giving up free dining to go with a "Magical" deal at Poly. Lately we have been kicking ourselves in the butt that we gave up free dining at POR especially with the cost savings. So yesterday we booked POP with free dining. I'm going to keep checking to see if Riverside becomes available, but if not, we really liked POP last time(except for the gnats) and will be just fine staying there.

I totally get the indecision. We booked a standard room at CSR because there was no fd availability for preferred at POR. About three weeks ago, I checked the site and preferred at POR was available for my dates!!!!! And.....I stuck with CSR. I just invested so much time psyching myself up for CSR that I decided not to switch. So, keep checking if you really want POR back. You never know.

But I will absolutely miss Pop!!!!! It's my favourite resort! Now I'm jealous of you. I'm sure you'll have an amazing time no matter where you end up!

I see you got a solution but to answer your question anyway..

pests are around all the resorts, it is a swamp / marshland your staying in. they tend to be a little worse if it's been heavy rain during or just before your visit. the resorts with outside doors on the rooms and lights nearby your room tend to get a little annoying than a deluxe with all indoor corridors so you don't really experience them until you get outside and the pest control is a lot easier to do for that situation.

MK actually has a bat population that pops out at dusk and takes care of them around the water.. fun to watch them come out if you happen to notice them.

Hollywood is by far the worst especially around echo lake. It was so thick in may that people looked like they had cartoon bubbles over their heads walking by.

Maybe I've just gotten lucky but we went in that time period in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and never noticed any gnats. I always book lakeside at Pop. We did have a giant cockroach hanging out on our alarm clock, though.

In all the years I've gone to Disney World, I have yet to get bit by a single mosquito let alone see a gnat. I did see a squirrel bathing in a melted ice cream once though

I love the "Disney is built on a swamp" responses. I know this, but we have stayed at AofA, ASMo, POR, CSR and the cabins at Fort Wilderness and NEVER had gnats. All had exterior entrances and still nothing. I just didn't know if it had anything to do with the proximity of the lake. At the cabins we had water right outside, but no gnats.

bizeemom, I read the thread you posted and we had the exact same experience as yourself. This trip I asked for a room away from the lake, because when we had the problem at POP, when we walked past other rooms on the way to the main building or pool we noticed none had the gnats outside their door. We loved POP so hopefully according to others we had a rare occurrence.

In July 2009 I had a lakeview room and do remember noticing more bugs on the door at night than other locations I have stayed since then. If you have some mosquito repellent, I found that spraying it on the outside part of door, lessened the amount of bugs on the door and didn't notice any in the room after that.

FWIW, we stayed in lakeside rooms at Pop in late August in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Never had any problems with gnats or any other bugs.

We did enjoy seeing the big turtles in the lake and fed them fruit, but we won't be doing that ever again.
