Hi all i was wondering if anyone would share some web sites for eating gluten free and also maybe and recipes that they like? I am new to this and any help would be great.

Thanks!

While no one in my family needs to be GF, you might check out the crockpotting blog http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/

One of her daughters is GF and all of the crockpot recipes are safe for her to eat - this site is also a great resource to learn about GF products... Trader Joe's comes up alot.

I don't have the recipe with me but I'm sure google can come up with it- peanut butter cookies, just PB, eggs and sugar I believe.

Alton Brown's Gluten Free Chewy Choc chip cookie. Just go to the Food Network website and search "chewy gluten free" They are almost better than "Toll House" ones!

I second this suggestion. She has some really good recipes on there! My DS outgrew allergies to wheat, barely and rye (the gluten containing grains) last September, so I'm still fairly current on what's good and what's not worth your time or money.

Pasta: Tinkyada rice pasta is by FAR the best GF pasta. You will not miss regular pasta if you can get your hands on this stuff. Whole Foods carries it, and our local grocery store (HEB) also carries it.

Flour: You will need to use a blend of flours to bake anything decent. The best blend I've found is Betty Hagman's Featherlight Rice Flour Blend:
Feather Light Rice Flour Mix (Betty Hagman)

This mix can be used for most regular recipes that call for wheat flour.

9 Total Cups 12 Total Cups

Rice Flour 3 cups 4 cups

Tapioca Flour 3 cups 4 cups

Corn Starch 3 cups 4 cups

Potato Flour* 3 tablespoons 4 tablespoons

(*not to be confused with Potato Starch Flour)

Potato flour can be replaced with potato buds. Measure all into a large, strong ziplock bag. Close tightly and roll and shake to mix. A wire wisk can also be used to help mix.

This flour can not be sifted. It is very fine so it can get messy. This can be used with just about every regular recipe cup for cup.

You can also buy it premixed off of Amazon.com through Authentic Foods.

Bread: I'm not much help in the bread department b/c DS is also allergic to eggs, and pretty much all good gluten-free bread has eggs in it. KinnickKinnick (not sure on the spelling) is supposed to make a pretty good bread. They also make donuts. They are in the freezer section of the grocery store.

Cake Mixes: The new Betty Crocker GF cake mixes are really good. We also like Pamela's mixes (the chocolate cake and brownies are both really good).

Good luck with your new gluten free lifestyle! --Katie

We have been gluten free for years. My kids are also allergic to corn & milk.

I agree the Tinkyada pasta is the best!

Pie crusts you need to make homemade. Rice flour works best. I make a great pie crust with an egg, rice flour, shortning & almond flour.

I like Fearn's brown rice mix for making pancakes & banana bread or muffins. I follow the basic recipe on the box & add a few ingredients to make it my own. (What good cook doesn't?)

Look for "Kosher for Passover" products learn to read the labels.

Gluten Free Mall has all kinds of products people have written opinions on the products. They clearly spell out for you possible allergens. Even if you don't purchase from them, you can see pictures of products so you know what to look for in your store. I have purchased from them before & have had no problems.

Need to convert a specific recipe to gluten free?

If you find a gluten free item you like, check on Amazon.com to see if they have it on there. I know that I buy cake mixes & cookie mixes in bulk and get it quite a bit cheaper and free shipping.

I skip a lot of the "gluten free" foods. They are expensive and few of them are really worth it. But Udi's has good bread. I like a different pasta brand, I'll check when I get home.

Instead I go for normal foods that are naturally gluten free - corn tortillas. Rice. Lettuce wraps instead of sandwiches. A little Dove chocolate square instead of brownies. Ice cream or pudding for dessert.
