Hi,

We are headed to the world in March and this is our first trip since our daughter has been diagnosed with Celiac. I have been doing some research and read some reviews but was hoping one of you experst could help me.

Should we try San Angel Inn or La Hacienda de San Angel? What is the difference between these 2 restaurants? Which is nicer? Which does better GF?

Thanks so much!

I had a much better experience at La Hacienda. There were some yummy options, the chef came out and I had no issues. We used to like San Angel Inn as well but had a bad experience a few trips ago and I haven't been back. There was a mix up with the salsa and I almost ate gluten (the red sauce has wheat, green is ok). Also the waitress didn't speak English well and was hesitant to bring out the chef. Overall, I did not feel safe eating there.

Your situation is similar to mine this trip. I've been researching for days, and La Hacienda seems to have better gf reviews. I read somewhere that they have a dedicated machine that only makes corn tortillas. We're also vegetarian, so that is great for us because the article also said they can use those corn tortillas to make vegetarian burritos. I actually just switched our ADR from San Angel to La Hacienda a day or two ago. Be aware, March ressies are filling up fast! That's when we're going, too. I wanted to switch a couple other ADRs since we learned we need to have gf options, but we would have been eating at 8 or 9 pm at the places I wanted.

I agree with both of the pp above. My experience with San Angel Inn made me very uncomfortable, so much so that I won't eat there again.

Our waitress barely understood English and while I kept asking for the chef, she kept trying ask for my order. She brought out all the wrong drinks two times. Finally the chef came out and I explained that I had a gluten allergy and a severe avocado allergy. He brought me my own little cup of green salsa. Just as I dipped my chip in, I noticed that it was very green like the color of mashed up avocado. I then asked if it was avocado and he quickly said it was and whisked it away. After that I was so nervous for the rest of the meal and it didn't help that he was standing by our table the whole time, like he was just waiting for me to have an allergic reaction. So we won't be returning.

Having said all that, I have read excellent GF reviews of La Hacienda so we'll definitely try there instead.:thumbsup2

thanks so much! La Hacienda it is!

and yes, I have noticed that all of a sudden the ADR's are not so easy to get! Cancelled our Ohana's so it could be moved to a different night and now we can't get in at all duing our 8 days!

I know you are looking at table service, but we did a totally unplanned walk up for a quick service meal last week and loved our gluten free meal. The chef came right out and he made us gluten free beef tacos with salsa and a Popsicle for dessert. He did not feel like the nachos would be a good choice for us because of cross-contamination, so he gave us 4 tacos instead of the usual 2 and nachos. He also mentioned that their salsa, sour cream and hot sauces are also gluten free. They even gave us an extra Popsicle after we thanked them for their great service!

My mom and I both ate gluten-free (among other allergies) excellently at both La Hacienda and La Cantina (the quick service).

I have full-fledged reviews on my blog, but they were both amazing. Try to get the chef at La Hacienda. The server did nothing but speak in broken English and smile (he was super nice, but didn't understand). The chef was great.

I've been to both eating Gluten Free, and have really had decent experiences at each. San Angel Inn has a really awesome atmosphere, especially for kids. The food is most "traditional" Mexican that you get in the states, meaning lots of chips, dip, tacos, enchiladas, etc. Mexican is such an easy meal to eat Gluten Free for me, that I make reservations in Mexico each time I go to Disney! As for Lahacienda, it is certainly a bit nicer than San Angel, and if you can schedule to eat when the fireworks happen, it can't be beat! The dishes will easily cater to a gluten free diet, but the they are also a little different than what you typically get. There is no cheese dip - the appetizer is more of a melted cheese over peppers (like pizza-type cheese). The food is great, but I actually think I prefer the food at San Angel. The atmosphere at Lahacienda gets my vote!
