First off, before I discuss how Disney wonderfully accommodated my family and I with a food allergy, I just want to explain to those who don’t have Celiac Disease exactly what it is. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease where the body cannot process gluten. When a person with Celiac ingests gluten, it flattens the villi in the small intestine, which can lead to malnutrition, cancer, depression, and many other ailments. Gluten is found in grains such as wheat, malt, barley, and rye, which means a person with Celiac must avoid even the smallest contact with such foods as bread, pizza, pasta, and other various items.

When we booked our Walt Disney World vacation, we made sure that when making dining reservations on the 407-WDW-DINE line, we indicated on every reservation that we had an allergy to wheat/gluten. This allowed the servers at the restaurants to accommodate us, but I will get to this in a second. Here are my restaurant reviews for those with Celiac.

We were at Disney from August 27-September 1, 2007.

Whispering Canyon Café in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge- We went into the Lodge for dinner on our first night. As our first dining experience with the allergy, we were incredibly flattered that the maitre de told us that the chef would be out to talk to us. As I looked on the menu, I was bombarded with menu items such as corn bread and meats covered in barbeque sauce, items I knew I couldn’t have. The chef came out and asked what I wanted, and I told him that I was interested in ordering the skillet. He said no problem, just avoid the corn bread (which we declined altogether for the other members of our party), and he said he just wouldn’t put croutons in my salad. As well, he asked how a nice, gluten free brownie with vanilla ice cream sounded. A brownie? I hadn’t heard that word spoken in a restaurant in a very long time. The food and dessert were GREAT and we were looking forward to a great vacation with great dining options.

Chef’s De France- At this gorgeous restaurant in Epcot, they were a little less knowledgeable than the previous dining experience. The chef told me there weren’t as many options as I’d like, but offered to bring in gluten free pasta, something that sounded delicious. But I ended up deciding on a plain pork chop with French fries, which was quite delicious. The chef told me that at most Walt Disney World restaurants, the French fries are fried in a dedicated fryer, which means they are gluten free. The problem with places such as McDonalds and Burger King is that the fries are put in the same fryer as the fried chicken, leading to big cross contamination issues.

Chef Mickey: I have been to Chef Mickey many times for breakfast and dinner, but for the first time they offered a special lunch, which we made reservations for. The chef came out to tell me that there were limited gluten free items available at the buffet, and the majority of my lunch consisted of lime chicken and seasoned potatoes, which were delicious, but I would have liked some additional choices. I recommend coming here for a typical breakfast buffet, where I have heard they even make special Mickey waffles for those with Celiac.

Ohana- For dinner the next night we went to Ohana, which was a delight. The meal started with special wanton chips and sauce, both of which I couldn’t have. The chef came out and informed me that he would bring out some tortilla chips and special sauce to accommodate me, which was lovely. He also brought out separate wings and shrimp, both of which didn’t have the regular sauce, but were still very good. The only meat on the skewer that I could have was the steak, but by then I was already full from the wings and shrimp. For dessert, instead of the bread pudding (an obvious no-no), I had a big bowl of pineapple, which fit in nicely to the Hawaiian theme. Everything was great.

Mama Melrose: For this day, we made last minute reservations here for lunch. The chef was very nice and accommodating, and was from the EXACT town that we were from. He informed me that gluten free pasta was readily available, and I decided on the chicken parmesan with penne. I also had an awesome ceaser salad (no croutons) before the main meal. As he brought the food out, he said that if we had made the reservation a drop earlier, he could have prepared some gluten free breading to put on the chicken. The pasta looked so delicious, I don’t even think it would have mattered. This was an absolutely wonderful place to eat.

A note about the resorts and Counter Service restaurants throughout W.D.W.- Whether you are eating in your resort’s food court, or you are at any Counter Service restaurant, just ask to see the chef and they will accommodate you. At the Caribbean Beach Resort food court, the chef made me a hamburger with a gluten free bun and French fries. At The Launching Pad in Tomorrowland, we looked at the ingredient list to make sure that the Turkey Legs were gluten free (they are).

In conclusion, if you have ANY allergy, whether it is Celiac Disease, lactose intolerance, an allergy to eggs or anything else, the key is to let them know in advance by marking it on the reservation. The staff of the Walt Disney World resort was extremely accommodating, and we were incredibly pleased with everything. My suggestion is to also get in contact with the restaurant ahead of time to know what you can specifically have. Just request this number when making the reservation. And remember, have a great meal!!!

excellent review - we have a friend whose wife is gluten-free, and they have 2 young children - she (the wife) was wondering how she'd be able to eat in disneyworld (it's hard enough at home, where you're in control of your own meals) and i'm sending her the link to read your reviews - thanks! :)

No problem! I am glad your friend is going to be able to go to WDW care free about dining.

Enjoyed reading your review, thanks for posting.

I have been going to Disney for years with Celiac's and I always have great meals. It was nice to read some of your reviews, because those are some of the restuarants I will be trying for the first time. I will be going to Whispering Canyon ( what skillet meal did you get?) and Mama Melrose ( wasn't sure about this one, e-mailed the Chef and he said he could make any of the fried foods with a little notice). Was this your first time a Disney with Celiac's? I never go out to eat except for when I am at Disney. It is just too hard. Great reviews by the way, I never think to do this.

Thanks for your reviews - it's great to know that the WDW chefs are so accommodating when it comes to allergies :thumbsup2

Thanks again. At Whispering Canyon, I got the skilet that included smoked pork ribs, pulled pork, oven-roasted chicken, Peel-n-Eat shrimp, beans, and mashed potatoes.

The reason why Mama Melrose wasn't able to make the fried foods is because we literally made that ADR a few hour prior. We were originally going to go to The Brown Derby, but I miscounted our TS credits and it would have been too expensive. But I absolutely loved the decision to go to Mama Melrose's because the food was great and the chef was EXTREMELY accommodating (even on such short notice).

Thanks for your review. I've been celiac for almost ten years, and Disney has been very accomadating. I've never been to Mama Melrose, but after your review, I think I'll have to try it! Would you return to Chefs de France?

Eh... that's a toss up. Because we were thrown the reservation (they gave it to us because we originally were booked in Japan but it wasn't ready), I never got the number to call the resteraunt about the allergy. In the future I would go because everyone else in my party really enjoyed their food, but I would DEFINETLY call ahead to confirm what they can and cannot make.

My son has multiple food allergies and we had super service at every location where we dined. We were on the dining plan as well. He was so thrilled to have ice cream in a restaurant and brownies as well! If you ask at any location where they make waffles the chef's can make you the Mickey Waffles. My son was doing happy dances when they made him one at our hotel (CBR). He got a pager since they had to make it up fresh for him. He was one happy kiddo!

Did you have any problem with any of the resturants that you visited bringing bread items to your table for anyone in your party not needing a gluten free diet? The reason I ask is because 'Ohana will no longer bring the pineapple bread to the table when you are seated. They say it is only until the Chef gets there, but a person who posted never got their bread even after asking for it several times. My family does not need a gluten free diet, and I don't want to deny them gluten. We know to keep the bread away from me. I didn't like this, so I e-mailed to see if I could get an answer. I still don't know if it is a new policy at Disney or just with 'Ohana and I wanted to know what your experience was since you just dined there. I did receive confirmation of this policy from a Chef at 'Ohana. Thank you.

I is so great to be able to go into a restaurant and not worrying if DD will be able to eat. WDW is the only vacation we have ever taken that I don't have to cook for her. To be able to go into Pizza Planet and other food courts and order her a pizza is priceless to us. LeCellier was also wonderful with her. Made her a special appetizer with the GF bread so it was like a mini pizza and she enjoyed her chicken also.

We did the O'hana breakfast also I thought they just forgot to bring the pastries so now I know it is a new policy. I prefered the kiddos eating eggs and waffles so I never asked for the basket.

Thanks for your report! :thumbsup2

Two of my children cannot tolerate wheat in great amounts. [Digestive, bloating, eczema, asthma...]
They tested negative for Celiac, and the allergist is no help, so we just keep them off of it, and they do much better.

It was nice to hear about restaurants that we haven't been to.

Our trip was slightly complicated by the fact that we were on the DDP and both of them had to order items approved for child credits. I probably could have asked for exceptions, but we made due. As I said, thankfully trace is not as much a problem for us.

We had a WONDERFUL meal at Liberty Tree Tavern, where the kids were brought HUGE platefuls of dedicated GF foods, as well as their own gravy boats of GF gravy and some GF rolls. They were also given ice cream for dessert.

At Princess Storybook breakfast they were given Van's Waffles to replace all the pastries they couldn't have.

At Donald's Breakfast a sauras (soon closing) they brought dedicated plates with GF pancakes, eggs, sausage, and bacon.

We were also thrilled to have Amy's GF cheese pizza at Pizza planet.

Thanks again for reporting!

DisneyMom5, did you just go up to the counter and order the pizza? I have never done counter service, but would certainly like to. I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you.

I was quite nervous too! LOL

I had gotten info from the lady who works for WDW special foods, whose name escapes me at the moment, [Brenda Bennet, whew, I do have a brain cell left. LOL] and I knew what GF foods were available and where. Other pizza places carry the GF pizza also, but it is an adult CS credit. At Pizza Planet, all credits are the same.
I just went up and said "I need a Gluten Free pizza meal, and then I need yada, yada, yada...."
They informed me it would be a few minutes extra, which was fine, and then offered to bring it out to us when it was done! EXCELLENT service there. I was really surprised how quick and easy it was.

Happy to answer any other questions, or to look up Brenda Bennet's info for anyone!

Thanks DisneyMom5,
I go to Brenda for everything she is wonderful. I have just been a little nervous about what to do with counter service. I went to Liberty Inn once (the one in Epcot) and I knew they had gluten free buns for there burgers and hot dogs, but didn't get one. I just pictured them calling over a manager and needing to go through a big story. Did you go to any more counter service places? I am really curious to know how each one works it. Thanks again:thumbsup2

My family can eat gluten, and I hate denying them when I can't have. They had no problem bringing the regular bread over. Maybe that person was experiencing bad service or a new policy, but as of August you could get the bread on the same table.

My best advice for the CS is to get the manager. It may take a minute, but they can go over the ingredient list with you and go over how they'll prepare the food. Trust me, I was VERY anxious about CS meals, and that disappeared after eating at both MK and my own resort (CBR). We had no problems at any CS place on property.
