This was posted on the transportation board but is getting mixed answers. Thought I'd ask on here as well...

Can you bring glowsticks in your carry-on or do you need to check them?

Thanks!

You have to check them as they contain liquid. I guess you could put them in your 1 quart ziplock bag of liquids since they are less than 3 oz a piece, but I wouldn't waste that space since there's plenty of other liquids that are higher on my priority list, i.e. sunscreen.

I'm sure last year I had a few in the package (individually wrapped) and they were in the carry on. Nobody said anything to me.

Good question. I will check with my friend who now works the check point at our airport to see what the policy here is.

The stuff inside them is liquid...they will make your throw them away if you put them in carry on. Pack them in your checked bag, definitely, unless you want them in the trash.

There is hardly any liquid in them!

I kept 2 bottles of Silk and a Apple Juicebox in my stroller and it went through the scan no problem. Nobody asked or mentioned a thing.

Then you were extremely lucky and/or had a very lax TSA agent checking. Either way, the OP can't count on having the same experience.

Personally I would wrap them up really well and put them in their own pocket on your checked baggage. The reason I say this is because I have had one break all over my clothes b4 and its heck to get out. Something inside my suitcase punctured it and it was not fun washing it out. We are packing ours in w/ our box we are mailing ahead of time. I would wrather it get all over something in plastic than my wallet, keys, etc.

I work for TSA. You CAN NOT carry these items in your carry-on bag. They are considered prohibited because of the liquid inside them and the fact that they DO NOT have the quantity of liquid marked on them. The containers of liquid MUST be MARKED CLEARLY under 3.4 ounces. A liquid/gel/paste is anything that WILL NOT keep its shape if outside its container. This includes the liquid in the glow sticks.

Use a cardboard or plastic tube to pack the glow sticks. This gives them more protection so they don't crack or rupture during the flight. I have purchased some that come in plastic tubes and they are easy to put in checked luggage.

Ok, thanks, sounds like they'll be going into the checked bag. They are already in a cardboard tube (how they were packaged), so they should be protected. Thanks!

The Glow sticks CAN go in the carry on luggage ONLY if you place them in your ziploc bag and they count towards your 3 oz liquid items. This is straight from a TSA employee. I would not recommend trying to take them in the carry on unless you place them in the ziploc bag. HTH

The problem with this is that the glow sticks or the containers are not clearly marked with the oz. Some TSA agents will make you discard the liquid if they can't easily see that they are 3.4 oz or less.

Best thing to do is pack them in your checked bags.

However, if you must have a few for the night you arrive you could put 2 or 3 in a quart size ziplock and place it in the bin with your shoes etc. Keep in mind though that it may be tossed or worse - it could cause you to be set aside for additional screening.

I hate glow sticks. I had a freinds child here last weekend. SHE BIT through a green one and her whole face was green. It was scary. But Just so you know, Glow sticks cant hurt you but there is a chemical in them that can cause blistering so that could happen. Jut FYI
