Global warming??? Says who?!!!

Even *IF* Global Warming/Climate Change were a money garb (for whom I have no idea) what is so wrong with recycling and using our resources wisely so that future generations can have a nice planet? I see no problem with recycling water bottles, carpooling, using more efficient lighting, etc. Who really has a problem with any of that?

I don't doubt that this global warming/climate change is mainly natural; however I do firmly believe that we are atleast partially responsible for it. Why not do what we can to save the planet?

Fully agree.
Your post took me straight back to the Circle of Life film at The Land.
Love that show and the Living with the Land boatride.
Must go now as I have a fastpass for Soarin' and "I'd hate to miss it".

It's one of the top. Global warming is a quick and easy money grab, nothing more.

By whom and for what?

I have a masters in environmental geology - does that give me enough credentials to weigh in on this debate, or do I fall into that category of a "loosely-defined scientist"?

When I was in grad school back in the mid-90s, you better believe there was a crash grab based on global warming. I even worked one summer in the Arctic on a permafrost study (and made a killing doing it). Everyone who could manage it was trying to manipulate their work to match up with the global warming movement because, just like in every other business, those who are working on the "in" topics get all the breaks and all the money.

I do not believe that human-produced carbon dioxide is driving climate change. Neither does my DH (PhD in geology), nor do most of my former colleagues in geology who hold a long-term view on the history of the earth. I do think there is significant value in reducing our energy consumption - conservation is rarely a bad thing! I also have serious concerns about water, soil and air pollution, but of all the possible contaminants, carbon dioxide is the one I'm least concerned about.

Weather right on target for this time of year. We are melting.

Planet Earth makes it preposterous not me. As for me insulting, that is how you choose to take it. That is something over which I have no control. 7 years ago, our daughter in second grade learned that the Earth has been through many climate changes.

Not all climate changes have been brought about by cataclysmic events. A huge volcanic eruption usually brings bring about short-term climatic changes. Short term meaning a decade or a couple of decades.

Variations in the Earth's orbital characteristics however can last 100,000 years. This is when the Earth's orbit goes from elliptical to more circular and back affecting the amount of the variation in solar energy received at the top of the atmosphere.

A 2nd cyclical variation results from the fact that as the Earth rotates on its polar axis, it wobbles like a spinning top changing the orbital timing of the equinoxes and solstices. This effect is known as the precession of the equinox which has a cycle of about 26000 years.

The 3rd is the earth's tilt. Right now it's at 23.5 but can vary from approximately 22.5 to 24.5°. A small tilt means less variation in temperatures between winter and summer in the middle and high latitudes. Of course, a greater tilt means the opposite. The tilt cycles last about 41000 years.

Another event having a big impact is sunspot activity. To make a very long explanation short, very little sunspot activity was occurring on the sun's surface during The Little Ice Age, a time of a much cooler global climate and some scientists correlate this occurrence with a reduction in solar activity over a period of 90 or 180 years.

Sorry for the long post but there is a lot of scientific information out there, much of it by climatologists who have debunked the global warming theory which led to "global warming" now being called climate change.

This is a great synopsis of historic climate change theory- are you sure you're not my DH?! My greatest fear when we're at a dinner party is that someone will mention global warming. He's not usually a bore, but when that topic comes up...well...let's just say that everyone gets a detailed education on climate cycles and carbon sinks :headache::scared:

Man-cause climate change is a scam. However, I still oppose pollution based on the need for clean air and water.

I wish I had added that to my little post because it is important. The fight should be to save the people not the planet. The planet will survive and remake itself long after we are gone.

Some, not all, of you are young enough that you don't really know what it was like on this planet just a mere 40 years ago. Smog was so thick it was unreal. Lakes and rivers were so polluted that in one case, I think in Cleveland the river actually caught fire. Imagine that...a river caught on fire.

I take it personally when younger folks start acting like without them the world would be in the dumpster. This movement started long before most of them were even a gleam in their parents eye. If we hadn't been aware, if we hadn't taken action, if we hadn't done everything we could to change the environment we lived in we would probably all be dead or mutant by now. Be thankful that all you really have to deal with now is fine tuning what is already in place and perhaps fighting the fight against styrofoam and plastic. Two supposedly non-biodegradable substances that since they don't decay are not harming anything except some delicate sensibilities.

Green teams, no matter how piously sincere they may be, turn me off completely. For the most part they don't really understand what is bad and what isn't. No one takes the time to reason it out, all they can do is react to something that is perceived to be bad. It loses a lot of credibility in the process at least in my mind.

That's nothing. There are some forests out west that are so polluted they catch fire and burn for weeks on end.

It has been discovered that the sun goes into warm and cold cycles.

Now if big Al can control that.:rolleyes1
