Glennbo’s City, Sand, and Savanna PTR - TR Link (pg 73)

We didn't do many activities since we were only there for two days, but I really wanted to try to do the turtle walk. I'm sorry that we missed it.

We played bingo one evening and it was actually kind of fun. There are stupid little prizes for the winners, but in the end, I think everyone got to choose a stupid little prize. :)

Ooo, I love stupid little prizes! :hyper:

The campfire was a lot of fun, too. We have younger kids, but I was up singing and dancing with the kids for most of it. The line for s'mores, though, was a little long. They had us line up to get the sticks and marshmallows and then, when you had the marshmallows melted, you had to get in another line for the chocolate and crackers. Both of our girls skipped the chocolate and crackers so you know it had to be too much line for them.

Bummer. I'm not big on marshmallows...just give me the chocolate.

I would recomment two restaurants (if you are looking for places away from the resort). We ate at Squid Lips twice. The first time was on the first day for lunch. I think there were maybe two other tables occupied and we were right by the open windows. We had the salt spray on our faces the whole time and we could watch the dolphins playing. The food was really good and the atmosphere just screamed vacation.

Squid Lips definitely gets good reviews from most everyone on the DIS. We asked my sister-in-law (who lives nearby) about it and she said it was a tourist trap. Yeah, but that's exactly what we are!

We also got pizza from Orchid Island Pizza. It's just down the street from the resort. We actually walked there to pick up the pizza. The place isn't much to look at and the workers weren't overly friendly, but the pizza was very good. Since we had a studio, we didn't cook at all.

I need to write that down...we're probably going to get pizza for our first meal after our long drive.

Can you tell that we loved it? I think I just wrote a trip report in your ptr!!!

:rolleyes1:laughing:

:lmao: I did have that thought when I saw the length of your reply. Thank you for the review!

Congrats to new graduate Lauren! I hope the girls have a great trip to NYC. I'm also looking forward to their take on NYC. My middle child has been there twice and loved it.

Thanks Vanessa! I'm jealous of those two, heading to NYC!

Can't wait to seethe pix from NYC !!!1 of my individuals just returned from a People & Places trip to NYC and he loved it !! Saw a Yankees game and all the sights !! He is very tired from all the walking but ready to go again !!

Me too! I've reminded both of them that they have a lot of people who are waiting to live vicariously through them, so they need to take lots of pictures.

Yay for under 3 weeks!:cheer2:

Nice for the girls to have their tickets and tours! You are a good guy! :thumbsup2 When do they leave again? I'm forgetful

Yeah, they owe me. ;) They leave tomorrow (Thursday) morning!

So excited for you about the Sea Turlte Walk :woohoo: It will be so awesome! DDIL and I turned some babies loose in PV a few years ago - such a neat experience!

I'm looking forward to it!

Hmmm, my first thought about the night goggles was the same as yours - everyone better keep their blinds closed! :sail: My second thought is that I don't know how many animals are out there at night. I saw them all walking in a single file line like they were going to Noah's Ark right about dusk. They headed into a walled structure with barbed wire around the top that you don't really even notice behind the trees. When they were all in, the gate closed and you couldn't even tell the gate was there. Maybe not all of them retire for the evening. :confused3 I'm sure you'll find something to do with the night vision :rolleyes1

We used the resorts' night vision goggles on a previous trip and there were some animals out. I'm not sure what we'll see, but it'll be fun. I'll have to watch James that he's keeping them pointed at the savanna. :rotfl2:

I hope Lauren and Judy have a great time in NYC! How exciting that everyone's trips are coming up so soon!!!!

It's about to begin! Thank you!

*Love* Squid Lips. They have a location in Melbourne too (not a chain, it's just the two of them) and it's a great spot for dinner. Everything is super fresh. The one in Melbourne is on the river, looking out over the causeway. I would definitely check it out :thumbsup2

We might. To be honest, other than the turtle walk, I have basically nothing planned for Vero. No dinner reservations, nothing. It might actually feel like vacation!

Congratulations to Lauren! Hope she and Judy have a great time in NYC!!!

Thank you Marv. I'm looking forward to hearing their stories.

Your trip is right around the corner. I know you guys will have a great time! Can't wait to hear all about it!

I can't wait to tell you about it, so get ready to pull up a chair. But give me a couple weeks to find out what I'm gonna tell you. ;)

Congrats to Lauren!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yay::yay::yay::dance3::dance3::dance3:

Thank you Kathy!

Well, I’ve been telling you how busy we’ve been for a while now so I suppose I should share some pictures and stories.

Last week I took Wednesday off and chaperoned a class trip for James. We went to a local “picnic park” where they have a few carnival-type rides and food is included in the admission price. It was just burgers, dogs, fries, popcorn, cotton candy, and drinks, but that can be fun. A river runs by the park and the kids can get on an inner tube at one spot and float downstream to another, where the inner tubes are collected and shuttled back to the start. Here’s James getting out of the river after a tubing run.

But that wasn’t all for that day…a friend had given me 4 Phillies tickets for that evening. Judy couldn’t go because she had a tutoring session that evening, and Marlene decided that she wasn’t enough of a baseball fan to go, so it ended up being me, Lauren, James, and a friend of James’. In this shot of James, you can get a sense of where our seats were.

727016987_2595016917_01.jpg

The Phillies lost to the Dodgers, but it was a decent game with the lead changing a couple of times. We left our seats at the top of the 9th inning, but watched the Phillies’ last at-bat from the 3rd base side of the stadium in case there were some late-game heroics. But more importantly, on that side of the stadium we were well-positioned to make a hasty exit ahead of the crowds.

Over the weekend, we held a graduation party for Lauren. Both sets of grandparents came for the festivities and stayed with us, so we had house-full.

IMG_5577.jpg

You can imagine the cleaning and sprucing that had to be done, inside and out, to make our lived-in home look significantly less so. It was an exhausting weekend, but a great one.

Here’s Lauren's cake, which was made by a former PChef hostess of Judy’s.

IMG_5564.jpg

IMG_5570.jpg

We had a local Mexican restaurant cater some of the food and we had waaay too much…we’ve been eating it ever since. Fajitas anyone?

Monday night was the graduation ceremony and was held at the University of Delaware. We were rushed to get out of the house, but I managed to take a couple of pictures of Lauren in her cap and gown before we left.

The grandparents before the ceremony began.

IMG_5586.jpg

Marlene played in the band and I took a couple of pictures before the ceremony started.

IMG_5587.jpg

I don’t know who the kid is behind her, but check out this accidental photobomb!

IMG_5588.jpg

I was on the other side of the arena, so there was no way he knew I was taking a picture.

IMG_5588a.jpg

Of course I have some pictures of the graduation ceremony.

IMG_5608.jpg

When we found Lauren after the ceremony she told us that she had just shaken hands with V.P. Joe Biden. His niece was in Lauren’s class and apparently he was watching the ceremony from some inconspicuous location. She walked past him backstage as they were exiting and he said “Congratulations!” so she stuck out her hand to shake his. Pretty cool, regardless of your politics.

IMG_5617.jpg

IMG_5621.jpg

Then for a picture with James we told her to pretend like she loved him.

IMG_5625.jpg

When we got home after the graduation, we were all hungry. We hadn’t eaten much dinner (leftover Mexican food from the party!), being in such a hurry to get to graduation. So, we broke out some bagels. While we were cutting and toasting them, James brought up the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, although I have no idea what brought the subject to his mind, and asked if we could go there. Judy said, “I told you before, we’ll go there sometime when Gram and Poppy aren’t with us.” And it was really funny because Gram was sitting there and the “when Gram and Poppy aren’t with us” part sounded like “gone off to the Great Beyond”, even though she just meant a trip when they aren’t along with us. Of course I had to chime in with, “at least we have something to look forward to when…they’re no longer with us.

So now you’re wondering “why did Glennbo have to tell us they were eating bagels when this conversation happened?” Okay, okay. There is more to this bagel story, and it might give you a little insight into Poppy and his namesake James. Anyway, I was the last one to toast a bagel and when I went over to the table to get some cream cheese, I thought it looked odd. It was in a little rectangular foil wrapper, like cream cheese comes in, but it looked a little more translucent than usual and when I stuck the knife in it, it had a softer consistency. I figured that it was some “lite” garbage so I looked at the wrapper and...are you ready for this?...it was....

Crisco!

Poppy and James were the only two who had used it and Poppy had already eaten his. James was half-way done, and left to wash his mouth out. They said they thought it tasted funny, but not strange enough to say anything. We all lost it! My mother-in-law was the one who had mistakenly taken it out of the refrigerator, and she felt bad, but still laughed pretty hard. We just couldn’t believe they didn’t notice anything. I said “we’ve got a real nice dinner planned at ‘Flying Fish’ at Disney, but it’ll be wasted on you guys.”

Moving on to Trip-Related Stuff!

  • I gave my Mom their Magical Express documents over the weekend and described how they can put the luggage tags on the bags that they’d like to check all the way through to the room. Then, I showed her the map of the airport and started to describe how they needed to take the fake-monorail from their terminal to the main section, then go to side B, then down to level 1, etc. etc. And she interrupted me, “I thought you said that we don’t have to pick up our bags?” So I had to explain that this was for them to catch a bus to the resort and how they need to hold onto the paperwork in order to get on the bus. We’ll see if they make it!

  • Judy traded some texts with her sister who lives near Vero the other day and learned that they will be away on vacation for most of the time that we’ll be there. She was kind of disappointed because we wanted to catch up with them while we were there, but her sister didn’t have a lot of choice because of converging schedules of her own family. It looks like we’ll be able to see them on our last night in Vero and they may join us for a day at Disney.

  • Judy
    IMG_3095-1-1.jpg
called me at the end of the workday today and asked me to come down to the mall. She wouldn’t tell me why, and I knew it sounded fishy. I figured (correctly) that I was about to receive an early Father’s Day gift, and it turned out that she got me an iPhone and needed me there so that we could transfer my Contacts list. We’d been talking about upgrading, and using the opportunity to give the younger kids our old phones, but I thought that it wouldn’t take place until later in the summer. When I found out what the surprise was, I realized why the girls were smiling so much (James isn’t much of a shopper and opted to stay home) – they were either getting a better used phone (Lauren) or their first phone (Marlene). So anyway, I’ve been loading a few apps onto it this evening, and took a peek at the DIS on it too.

  • The NYC twosome heads out tomorrow! Phase 1 is about to begin! Watch the Today show Friday morning…Lauren is making a sign to hold up right now.

3 Judys!

Hi Glenn, you must be extremely excited with not even a week before you go. I have a little bit over a month before my vacation and I am already very excited...

Congratulations to Lauren on her graduation!!! How cool that she shook Joe Biden's hand!!

:rotfl: Remind me never to come over to your house for bagels!!! Lots of leftover fajitas doesn't sound like the worst problem in the world though!

Thank you Marv. I'm looking forward to hearing their stories.

So who's taking the pictures for the TR??? :confused3

I can't wait to tell you about it, so get ready to pull up a chair. But give me a couple weeks to find out what I'm gonna tell you. ;)
What? You don't already have it half written??? You DO already know what you will be doing right??? :rolleyes1

Love this stall tactic!!! :rotfl2:

Some great graduation photos! Love the ones of Marlene in the band, and then the sequence of Lauren waving at family I guess, then almost going "where's Dad with the camera?"".........."Oh, THERE he is!!" :lmao:

And 2 Judy's plus a Judy Icon!!! :thumbsup2

Hi Glenn,

Long time lurker of your reports! Loved them all. Congrats to Lauren! You must be so proud.

Love the family photo of all of you outside! Love your puppy so cute!

The bagel story is to funny! What makes it even funnier is that a few of you actually ate the bagels with the crisco! That's one of those stories that will be brought up time and time again! You know remember when grandma put out crisco instead of cream cheese??? :rotfl: We have quite a few memorable stories that always seem to resurface during Christmas when were all together as a family. Lots of fun and laughter.

I hope Judy and Lauren have a fabulous time in NYC! Can't wait to read all about your new adventures!

Thanks so much for sharing. :goodvibes

3 Judy's.

Edit: I see that nodnol beat me to it. *drat*

That Crisco story makes me cringe. I don't know how they ate it!

Wow, so much to comment on. No wonder you've been busy.:lmao:

Congratulations to Lauren. Did she get a graduation speaker telling her how great their accomplishments were, or did she get the guy telling them that they're not special?:confused3

I always enjoy some Mexican food, but I'm not sure how many days in a row I could handle the leftovers though. I guess either way, I'd rather binge on leftover Mexican food than eat a bagel covered with Crisco.

Judy called me at the end of the workday today and asked me to come down to the mall. She wouldn’t tell me why, and I knew it sounded fishy. I figured (correctly) that I was about to receive an early Father’s Day gift
If my DW was to call me to meet her at the mall, my thought process would be more along the lines of "I don't know what she wants now, but if she wants me to come over there, it has got to be frickin' expensive." :headache:

I'm glad that wasn't what happened for you.:thumbsup2

I think we may have the next trend in food...toasted bagels with Crisco. Yum! :rotfl:

Congrats to Lauren!

Jill in CO

Lauren is a radiant graduate! She looks fab in the photos.

I'm cringing just thinking about eating bagels with crisco. I do have to admit to making that mistake a few times as a small child. After having had cool whip I knew I wanted some more. I found the crisco tub in the cabinet and thought I had struck gold....until my tastebuds told me different. To make matters worse I tried it again later in my life hoping the first time was just a mistake.

The girls should be enjoying NYC by now!

Thanks for sharing those pics, Glen!! Sounds like you guys have been busy having fun!!

I'm excited that your trip is almost here so it can be over and you can start your TR. :rotfl:

I have lurked and then got behind.....And now I realize our trips overlap LOL. A big congrats to Lauren!!

Correct! :cheer2:

Hi Glenn, you must be extremely excited with not even a week before you go. I have a little bit over a month before my vacation and I am already very excited...

I'm getting there. One more day of work, and then it's full-on packing and prepping!

Congratulations to Lauren on her graduation!!! How cool that she shook Joe Biden's hand!!

Thanks Sara! We thought it was pretty cool too. :)

:rotfl: Remind me never to come over to your house for bagels!!! Lots of leftover fajitas doesn't sound like the worst problem in the world though!

Who knows what you'd get if you asked for lox??

Yes, we're managing with our little fajita, pollo poblano, mexican meatball, and chips and salsa problem.

What? You don't already have it half written??? You DO already know what you will be doing right??? :rolleyes1

Well, looking at it that way, you've already got it half-read! :rotfl:

Love this stall tactic!!! :rotfl2:

A little entertainment before you move over to the next page. ;)

Some great graduation photos! Love the ones of Marlene in the band, and then the sequence of Lauren waving at family I guess, then almost going "where's Dad with the camera?"".........."Oh, THERE he is!!" :lmao:

She was waving to the family of the girl who was 2 people to her left...they're friends of ours. But you're exactly right -- she was scanning the crowd looking for us.

And 2 Judy's plus a Judy Icon!!! :thumbsup2

Yes, but that makes 3 Judy's and Katharina was first this round. :goodvibes

Hi Glenn,
Long time lurker of your reports! Loved them all.

Hi lovealldisney! :welcome:

I think you posted on at least one of my other reports...thanks for reading, and commenting! :goodvibes

Congrats to Lauren! You must be so proud.

We are, but I must admit it feels a little strange and depressing. I am not old enough to have an "adult" child, so this must be some kind of real-life Twilight Zone episode.

Love the family photo of all of you outside! Love your puppy so cute!

Thank you! We took it there because we have a similar one from when she was an infant. Different house, different dog, 2 less kids, but the same grandparents and parents posing at the side of the house.

You are exactly right! We have a similar one from waaay back when I was a kid. My Mom told my Dad that all he had to do to cook some pork chops that she had prepared for us was to set the oven at such-and-such degrees and put the pork chops in for however long. When we started to eat them we wondered what this crusty stuff was that was on them. It turned out that she had put plastic wrap over them in the fridge and he didn't take it off because she said, "all you have to do is...." and he took it very literally. "Remove plastic wrap" was not on the list. :rotfl2:

I hope Judy and Lauren have a fabulous time in NYC! Can't wait to read all about your new adventures!

They are at Wicked right now! Probably about time for it to end.

Thanks so much for sharing. :goodvibes

You are most welcome. Thanks for joining-in!

Gosh - getting here after the points were updated. YEESH :lmao:

Yes 3 Judys. :sad2:

Oh the Crisco... :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: I like that James left to wash out his mouth. :lmao:

When you started the bagel story - I thought someone was going to slice themselves and and an impromptu visit to the ER was going to happen.. Glad that was't the case.

Crisco is much better .... without the scar. :rotfl2:
