glandular fever

According to NHS Direct, for at least 2 months after initial infection. Some more info, taken from the site, below:

Glandular fever is contagious

You can catch glandular fever by coming into contact with the saliva of someone who is currently infected with the condition. Therefore, glandular fever can be spread through:

•kissing (it is often referred to as the kissing disease),
•exposure to coughs and sneezes, and
•sharing eating and drinking utensils, such as cups, glasses or unwashed forks and spoons.
You'll be contagious for at least two months after initial infection with EBV. Some people can have EBV in their saliva for up to 18 months after infection.

Once you've been exposed to glandular fever, it's highly unlikely that you'll develop a second bout of the infection. This is because almost everyone develops a life-long immunity to glandular fever after the initial infection.

Prognosis

There is no cure for glandular fever but, in most cases, the majority of the symptoms should pass within four to six weeks without treatment. Fatigue can sometimes persist for longer.

In most people, fatigue will end after three months. It's estimated that 9-22% of people will experience symptoms of fatigue that last up to six months.

Thank you for your reply.

So does that mean you would not be able to fly for two months after diagnosis??

I don't think it's as cut andry as what the nhs website says. I suffered from glandular fever and was back at uni within a month, but that month I was so tired I would not have been able to get on a plane never mind a theme park....

Best of taking doctors advice - I was not qurantined either?

I had Glandular Fever when I was 14 and had to stay off school for 3 months.

That was 10 years ago now so maybe things have changed over time but I was under the impression because of my past experience you was contagious for 3 months.

I think I recall having to have a blood test before I was allowed to go back to school but I may wrong there :confused3

Hope everything works out okay for you :)

I'd definately ask the doctor. In a plane it's just re-circulated air, so would be awful to infect a lot of people on the plane who are going on holidays, including children and people who may have weakened immune systems :(

DD had a really bad bout of GF in Jan, (in fact looking back we figure that she must've had it when we were at WDW) she was so ill that she was hospitalised. When she was discharged from the hospital the doctor said that she was able to go back to school, she went back a week later. So I'm sure that you'd be ok to fly, but I would just go ahead and check! Hope that everything is ok! :goodvibes

I hate to ask, but I don't like the sound of this. Are you all okay? :flower3:

Hi, thanks for caring

Had a bit of a panic ............... my niece went to the doctors and they said she had a viral infection. To cut a long story short had to ring doctor again in the evening (out of hours), and he said she might have glandular fever :scared1: (One of her school friends has just had it) She was at the doctors when I wrote the thread. Shame you cannot hear panic through the computer !

Well the doctor has said it is not glandular fever :cool1::cool1::cool1: I really had visions of her being contagious for couple months and not being able to go.

So at the moment, she is laying around looking like a little puffer fish and feeling very sorry for herself.

Thanks again for your concern.

I keep checking this thread and you could not imagine how relieved I am! :)

I have been watching you over the past months planning every detail of your trip so perfectly and when I saw your thread yesterday I actually felt sick!

Now you can post a happy question for your next thread! :yay:

You are soooooooooooo right, I felt so sick. I am not going to even count up the amount of hours planning I have done - I think with eight of us, and being our first time for all of us, and probably our last one with all of us, I want it to go as perfectly as I can arrange - I must admit I did think to myself if we had to cancel then that would be it - do not think I could go through booking ADRs again etc............... but yeah little puffer fish will hopefully get better within the next week or so, and be bright eyed and bushy tailed for our trip of a lifetime - thank you again for your concern :flower3:
