Giving Blood

I hated that! I would sleep, then OH, time for vitals! Fine, do that, back to sleep. Oh, breakfast time! Time to eat! Go back to sleep. Guess what, we need to do physical therepy now! I always fell back asleep after that, lol.

They gave me tons of meds, so I was sleeping 12+ hours a day. I felt so bad, I fell asleep on all of my visitors, including my best friend!

Kayla, sorry for hijacking your thread!

Meg, don't worry I fell asleep on my BFF too. I was so doped up on drugs I couldn't stay awake for more than 1/2 hour.
My physical therapists in the hospital were bad tho. I kid you not, I could not even move my leg, and they wanted me to get up and wobble around the floor on a walker. :scared1: IN THEIR DREAMS MAYBE! No dosage of pain killers would stop the pain when I tried to get up! (Nevermind the day I got home, getting out of the car I accidentely put weight on my leg. :scared1: hhohooowowowo I was blinded the pain was so bad!)

ETA:

i had an iv once, and they kept adjusting the needle, and then it was on the back bend of my wrist (OUCH) and i couldn't move my hand without shoveing it into a bone or something. that hurts SO bad.

no, i've never given blood, but i plan to this year. (:
From multiple experiences, the back of the hand is a pretty painful place to get an IV. I have at least two holes (one right on the bend between my wrist and my hand) and those IVs hurt so bad. I eventually asked them to put the IV in on the inner side of my hand, by the bone. That didn't hurt at all.
Also, hand IVs get infiltrated easily. My KR was a hand IV, and 3 nights later my IV got infiltrated. It blew up to the size of a balloon, and was in between extreme pain and numbness. It was bad.

Oh, I don't mind. :)

The last needle I had in my arm was in 8th grade. (I'm in 10th so that was awhile ago.)
And then before that I was young. So I'm not really used to them.

it wasn't the back of my hand. it was the back of my WRIST. where it bends and moves. so when i wake up in my drunken stupor of drugs and painkillers after surgery, and i move to brush my hair out of my face, my hand bends back and the needle stabs through to the bone in my wrist.

Well geeze, sorry for mis-interpreting. Essentially it's all the same because it all hurts the same.

Just for odd facts for anyone, most nurses and doctors can only draw blood right after the catheter is inserted. Many people believe that blood can't be taken after the IV is inserted, but it can. It takes a nurse/doctor with a lot of experience tho, not everyone can do it.
IVs have to be replaced every 3 to 4 days.
The standard size for the needle is a 22 gauge, I think.

ETA: I know a lot of people heard about my talking about my "port", but a lot of people don't know what it is. If anyone's interested, this is what it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_venous_catheter
WARNING: It is a bit graphic.
Kayla, I'm really sorry. I just get a little nerdy with medical mumbo jumbo. (If anyone wants to get really nerdy, my port caused arrythmias. The line got attached to the endocardium and had to be replaced.)

When I was in fourth grade I had to have a cat scan and they put an IV in the back of my hand. That hurt like HELL. I was screaming and crying so bad. Thankfully I haven't had to have it done since.

HOSA just did a blood drive at my school.
You had to be 16 years old and atleast 100 pounds. I was 2 monthes to late. :/

You have to be 16 and I'm 14...
They came to my school last week for a blood drive and a bunch of people did it...
I wouldnt even qualify for it as my iron level is INSANELY low...
I couldnt even do it if I did qualify I am terrfied of needles...
I also hate when people touch me...
So thats a big no no...

haha i donated blood for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I bawled like a baby 3 times. lol

I'm really glad i did it though!

I plan on donating at my HS blood drive later on in the spring.

I'm O Negative, so they should be very happy to see me.

My counts were super-low after my surgury, so I had to recieve some. Twice. They kept checking my blood, too. Once was at 5:30 a.m. I was like "take...the blood...and...let...me sleep. K, THANKS!"

I recieved two bags. They were from members at my church. :)

I have aichmophobia, so unless I have an anaesthetic, I don't think i'll be giving blood.

I'm too young but I would like to.
I was amazingly good with needles up until I went for my tetanus jab a few weeks back. It took ten minutes for the nurse to get it in my arm and when she did I tensed and ka-baam bruised muscle.
xD

i wasn't trying to be *****y. sorry for coming off that way. i was just trying to clarify where it was.

Were you dehydrated or tense? Those can definitely make for more painful-than-normal jabs/shots.

Oh, okay. Sorry for the mis-interpretation! (:

I'll be donating for the first time next month. They just lowered the age to 16 with parental consent, so I'm ready. I haven't had blood taken in a long time and don't remember it, so I'm slightly nervous.

I tensed.
The nurse kept telling me over and over to relax or it'd hurt more but she said it in such a scared tone that it made me unsure and when she finally did stick the needle in I tensed. The nurse was like you tensed it's going to hurt you a hell of a lot more now. xD
Me and my friend both got our shots on a friday afternoon and the monday morning she was incapable of moving her arm and mine was back to normal though.
I'm very very very lucky and besides initial injections and boosters I've needed needles.

One of the guys that was donating for the first time filled out all his paperwork, but then they checked his blood pressure and it was too high.
So they told him to go and sit down for 10 minutes and calm down a bit and come back.
Well he did and went back over and it was higher! lol.
He was kinda mad he couldn't do it, but he was freaking out too much.

And they had these neon colored bandages so it was pretty cool.

My tetanus wasn't bad, for whatever reason it was my meningitis one that did.. which is weird, because it's supposed to be the other way around. It must've been the way she did it the second time.
That was a little OT, and more of a reply to Haz.

I would love to donate blood but my mom won't let me do it through the place around here. She worked there for a month and said it is sooo not clean and if i want to donate i need to go to the hospital for them to take it.

If my mom was cool with it i'd be donating today.
