Giving a ticket to a CA resident

I am planning a trip with a friend to DL and I'd like to buy her ticket for her. Since she's a CA resident (but I'm not), her ticket will cost less than mine. I'd like to surprise her before the trip so she doesn't have to worry about budgeting for a ticket for our upcoming trip. If I buy her ticket, will I still be able to buy hers under the CA rate even though I'm not a CA resident? I assuming no.

If I can't, then my next question is this: is there any real advantage to buying the tickets before arrival (other than skipping the line at the ticket counter)? Or can I just wait until we get there, she can show her CA ID, and then I can pay for both our tickets at the ticket counter? I would send her a check and just have her order her own ticket before the trip, but I'm worried that would make her feel strange taking a check from me (as opposed to me just paying for the ticket on the spot).

Has anyone else done this? Any help would be great. I'm experienced at WDW but I've only been to DL a few times so I'm more of a DL "novice." Thanks!

She can show her ID and you can pay. I did this last year with my friends from Utah. Have fun!

Bear in mind that the discount is for SOUTHERN CA residents, not all CA residents. Check her zip code against the list to be sure she qualifies.

^--- THIS I am Cali Resident but up in Sacramento, and we don't get a discount.. I don't think discounts go above Bakersfield (maybe?)

Thanks for pointing that out - she lives in the LA area so she'll qualify for the discount.

You could go on the the DLR Website and check the Southern CA rates and then buy her a Disney Gift Card for that amount. To check the Southern CA rated you need to provide an applicable Zip code, if you aren't sure what her Zip code is then as long as you are sure that she is in Southern CA you could just use the Disneyland Zip code..

That's a great idea - thanks!

Am I wrong, or can't the southern California resident buy both the tickets - even the one for the out-of-towner - with the discount?

My understanding was no, these tickets are only for use by actual residents- but I've never used one, so I could be wrong.

As I was reading through the thread, this was the idea I was going to suggest. If you want to pre-purchase the tickets, I would do what Calidreamz suggested.

Also- it might cost more to buy the ticket at the counter then online. Hope you have fun! I can send you my address and you can buy me a ticket too! j/k :rotfl2:

Since we're on the topic, anyone want to grumble about how unfair it is that other CA residents don't get the specials/discounts? Everyone in Florida gets WDW discounts, so why doesn't the same apply to California and DL?

I agree that does seem unfair!!!

Seriously! It bugs the heck out of me to think that although I'm just 5 hours away I can't get the discount too. Have you ever driven from some of those places in SoCal to DL? It takes waaaaay longer than 5 hours sometimes.

I was thinking about that too, but I have a question.

But has anyone ever used a SoCal ticket a friend purchased and then had a problem because they weren't from SoCal? We saw these tickets for purchase at the grocery stores. What's to stop someone from just buying the tickets there and then walking in with them?

Well, you know, enough of us from Arizona go to DL, how come we don't get discounts! ;)

Because the population of Florida is about equal to the population of Southern California. The geographic region is carefully determined in order to provide an incentive to those within a certain geographic radius, not a state. Residents of the Mexican state of Baja California also get the same discounts.

There is nothing unfair about it - it's marketing.
