Give a day will COST US MONEY!!!!

I'll tell what I really see this as. I see this as an opportunity for this store to work their way through some inventory under the guise of a volunteer opportunity.

OP, for what it's worth, I totally agree! It sounds like this "stuff a bear" company was capitalizing on Disney's promotion!

If you don't like it then don't do it, simple as that. We did the blanket one as well and did have to spend about $45 on fleece. But it is still a total savings of over $200 for our family.

Not sure I'm understanding what you're getting at. We very happily did the PL blankets - 7 quilts in all. It was fun for us since we enjoy putting the quilts together. And, it also results in a big savings - over $500 since we had access to most of the material we used for free and spent very little on a batting and such. Mine was not misleading at all as to what was expected or what kind of time/cost investment it was. The OP, however, was mislead IMO and now can't switch opportunities since the program is closed. Being mislead up front would make me upset.

Ok so this is one of 2 emails I got regarding this same oppurtunity. I'm wondering if she got inquires about it and added this info in or if no one was signing up so she removed it. I signed up for the last 2 spots on 2/14 for March 13. My son and I went and I honestly...wasn't impressed. I was ready to pay the 12.99 each and had no problem doing so. But honestly, I thought we'd be stuffing a few bears and be there for more than 5-10 minutes. While I was there someone asked how she got involved in the process. She contacted where the bears were going to and they had to write a letter to hands on network for her. She said the bears were going to dcfs in worcester, ma (not far from we she is).

This was one of the few oppurtunites in our area that I could do w/my oldest son. They were very limited in age. I had signed up w/MAW and never received a return call for myself.

I posted on my facebook page when we got home that I felt guilty about calling it volunteering, but was I going to pay another 12.99 for each additional bear for me to stuff to send, nope. I did wonder myself if this was a way to get people into the business there is a doggie bakery in the front of the bear/plaster making area that pretty much everyone was stopping in on the way out and getting doggie treats.

Will I still redeem my vouchers, yup. This didn't turn out to be what I thought, but I still participated. If there was another oppurtunity that I could have done w/my son or my son could have done w/hubby, I would have done that. Anything else around here was cleaning up for a local sleep away camp, but they weren't doing that til later in spring, we go to WDW next month.

I volunteer on a regular basis and was using this experience to introduce my son to volunteering. I need to find another oppurtunity to do that, but I did explain to him what they were going to do with the bears after we were done.

Sorry for the long post....but as a person who did this experience with the same "vendor" I figured I'd add my .02. Honestly...if the program hadn't ended sign ups, I'd probably notify HON about the oppurtunity or lack of.

So..i'll say it as many have..flame away if you want to for us chosing this oppurtunity, but I signed up and it wasn't what I expected either. And if another oppurtunity was out there that my son could have participated in locally prior to our trip we probably would have done that. The ticket was an added bonus for us....

I do have a problem with the Build a Bear company in the OP's post, though. It does seem like they made money off of this charitable contribution. It would have been nice for them the donate the materials, or at least offer them at cost.

OP, for what it's worth, I totally agree! It sounds like this "stuff a bear" company was capitalizing on Disney's promotion!

At $12.99 per bear I would be willing to bet that the store is still making a profit-- gee, how charitable on their part.

And you don't think Disney is doing exactly the same thing? How many people are only going to Disney on their one "free" day and spending no other cash? Disney stands to make money off the promotion as well, since many people will not only upgrade their 'free' day but will spend a lot more money on Disney property.

Disney didn't claim: "We will provide you with all the "bear necessities" to complete this fun, quick and easy project! "

Disney didn't claim: "We will provide you with all the "bear necessities" to complete this fun, quick and easy project! "

Perhaps not. But did they mention anywhere that some of the volunteer opportunities being offered were going to require participants to spend money? Did they make folks believe there was no cost at all?

(I honestly don't know the answer to this because I never even visited the website)

I was a bit surprised at the cost of fleece for the project linus blankets, but I figure it it DEFINITELY a good deal in exchange for a one day park ticket (which is more than twice what I paid per blanket), even though we are using ours for the fast passes. But... I still don't mind, because these kids really need them. It's not something I will do a lot of in the future, but I've developed the blanket making skill, and have also had fun, and will have more fun in the parks. I love that a child can benefit from the fun I've had, and I'm glad to know that I can help.

I signed up for a donations drive for an animal rescue. They sent us a list of items they needed that included fabric softener. Really? Fabric softener??? To make it worse when I dropped the items off the "shelter" was someone's home and the donated items were all piled up high in their garage. I suspect it was not Fluffy or Spot that would be benefiting from any fabric softener donated.

I don't know either :) I have used the site to find some personal volunteer opportunities but I just skim the list to find what fits our family. I never looked at the specific GAD stuff/Disney rules.

But it sounds like the Project Linus and other blanket or "drive" type of projects made it clear that that personal money would/could be spent so that expectation was there. The issue here isn't really the fact that the OP has to spend the money for the project, it is that there was nothing that told her upfront that this was going to cost anything. I know to me it would be more of a principle issue.

As I mentioned my DD and I are volunteering at an event in a few weeks and the description specifically says "food, soda and water will be provided for all volunteers", much like the wording in the OP's description. If we got there, worked, they brought us drinks all day, told us to get all the food we wanted, and then at the end of the day handed me a bill for it I would be rather perturbed. I can afford it, and if they weren't "providing" it I would have paid for it anyway. But the principle would be the same. And if it wasn't the charity we are working for that handed me a bill, but it was a catering company that had told the charity they would provide all the food and drinks to the workers (with no discussion of a cost to them) and then billed us each at their "for profit" rates I would be even more upset-- and I know the charity would be also!

This is all really a matter of semantics. Once again the English Language makes things confusing and you really aren't sure if the man or the elephant was wearing the pajamas;)

To make it worse when I dropped the items off the "shelter" was someone's home and the donated items were all piled up high in their garage. That is such a shame!!! I would say that I am surprised at this but I just think of how many "people got taken" from this promotion. Someone else always try to capitalize on someone else. It would make one thing harder before doing something local again. I would bet that they use it for personal use but who knows, they could have used it to keep in the cages?:confused3, anyways, at least you did your part, and now they have to live up to theirs!!

I don't know about the fabric softner; maybe they use it to fluff up the towels/blankets for the animals? I know shelters often collect towels/blankets...

Anyway, I'm doing a drive for a local children's charity. I imagine what I'm donating (and others) is worth quite a bit, but I know it's going to a good home. Only I signed up; we all have annual passes. But, I'm thrilled to find a place who 1) needs items and 2) will use those items. If it all pans out, I'll try to get the mickey with pins. If not, I'm glad to help a local charity.

BTW-I'd just build the bears. It seems silly to be a give a day, though, as I know build a bear ran that promo last year--stuff it and donate it (but I think the bear was free to stuff and you paid for the clothes?)

They also listed baby wipes as well as fruit loops and apple jacks, supposedly for the peacocks and ducks. Those were at least semi-believable to me. I could imagine there are far more nutritional items for the avian critters though. :confused3

As far as some of the other posts, I understand what they are saying: they were looking to volunteer, not donate. It's called Give a Day after all ... not Bust your Budget.

I am a little surprised by the responses here. I did the Project Linus opportunity, but I knew up front that I would need to get or have the materials to make the blankets. There was no surprise. I would be upset, too, if I had signed up thinking I would be doing a service - volunteering my TIME - and then found out I'd be paying. If that were in the description, the OP might have chosen a different activity that was strictly time-involved such as serving food for a soup kitchen, helping at a childrens home, or cleaning up a highway. All things that wouldn't involved $. I think the OP is right...to find this out after the fact is not acceptable. And now that the program has ended, I don't think she can switch projects. From her statement above, it looks like she wasn't even doing the service for the tickets since she doesn't know for sure if she's going and might end up donating them. So, I don't think you can lump her in with the people who were just doing the volunteering for free tickets.

:thumbsup2 I totally agree. I would be upset also. If I knew up front then it would be different.

I bet everyone who used their own money will claim it on their taxes next year too, but criticize her for wanting something in return for donating money for the bear.

I'll take that bet and you lose!!! I do NOT file taxes as I do not have any earned income (VA disability comp is non taxable therefore no taxes filed) and even if I did I would not be claiming it either. I did it because it was what my family chose to do on top of our regular volunteer work and service projects. Like I said, I have spent money in all volunteer things I have done from buying supplies to help the teachers I volunteered with to buying trophies for my soccer kids that I coached or was team parent for. I did it because it felt right to me.

I think the point to this is that if the volunteers needed to pay to participate in this particular opportunity, then it should have been posted as part of the activities description. I don't carry about $50 with me all the time so if I showed up and needed to pay, it would be an issue. They should have described that in the sign up section so people could be prepared. I hope it works out for you...

Wow! Mine does NOT say that!

For all of you who have decided that I am a terrible person let me tell you this, I looked quite specifically for an opportunity that did not cost any money. This is the one we chose. Through a friend of a friend I found out that we would be charged to make the bears. This was NOT in the description for the activity. When I just called and asked about it the owner hemmed and hawed and asked when I signed up because she added that to the description AFTER many people had signed up.

I'll tell what I really see this as. I see this as an opportunity for this store to work their way through some inventory under the guise of a volunteer opportunity. You are not helping anyone by spending ten or fifteen minutes stuffing a couple of bear legs. I had expected an opportunity for us to do something that would actually help someone somewhere. If they had just asked for a donation I would have at least not felt deceived. I chose the wrong thing. Unfortunately I wil now have to pay up or not go. There are no other options.

I also understand that $55 is a fraction compared to the value of the tickets. But the tickets were a way for us to do double duty--help someone out, (which we already volunteer about 30 hours a month already because we enjoy it) and provide us a way to maybe get a couple of days in the parks if we can find the extra $$ to make our way down to Florida So flame away, if that's what you need to do.

I hear what you're saying. I think it should have been disclosed up front.
Because you could have chosen something else..
Paying $12.99 and spending 5-10 minutes doesn't really seem to really be volunteering, anyway, in the traditional sense.
We had opportunities to do park cleanups and things like that, so there are opportunities that require only your time and no financial investment.
I think kids would get more out of something like that, anyway, as opposed to watching mom and dad fork over money for a bear. I'm sorry that wasn't disclosed to you.. they really should have mentioned all of the details.

I paid well over $100 for the ConKerr cancer project for two people and spent well over a day each to sew the five required pillowcases ( we divided up the tasks) including going to the fabric store, cutting out the fabric, washing, ironing, and packaging them individually in ziplock bags, then shipping. I had to sew french seams as I don't have a serger. Making a pattern and cutting out the fabric wasn't easy nor were the seams, but I wanted the cases to look nice on the inside too. Considering the time and money involved it would have been easier and cheaper to buy the Disney tickets. I chose this activity as I am disabled/in a wheelchair and could not physically do most of the other volunteer opportunities. For a short moment I was sorry for my decision, then I thought of the kids who would receive these pillowcases and started to enjoy what I was doing and to feel good about my contribution. I stopped thinking of what I had spent and instead about the recipients. I *did* know though upfront that I'd be buying the fabric and that the project required good cotton fabric, not something filled with sizing at a cheap price. I think I'd have been upset to arrive at a location and find out I would have to pay- therein lies the difference so I don't blame the OP. Still, $12.99 per person is a bargain and not much time was spent either at the activity location. I know this may sound silly but I hope the kids who receive these bears during a horrible time in their life would know they were stuffed and sewn with love rather than resentment.----Kathy

Uhhmm... we used fabric softener for the kitties that we take care with the non profit organization we're a part of. This sucks for me - because I'm allergic to it - but it actually makes the cats not pee on the fabric as much, which causes us to be able to use the blankets/towels for longer. It's also much nicer for the special needs kitties who may be missing a leg or two, whenever they fall down (which, as you can imagine, happens a lot). It's nice to be able to offer these animals a comfortable life while they're looking for their forever homes. :cloud9:

Also, I really think you should think more about being upset that these animals were being kept in someone's home. Foster homes are MUCH better for animals than being kept in cages. They learn much more important skills, such as how to adjust to home living (if they were stray or feral), and are also able to be socialized along with other cats. I would MUCH rather have animals living with foster parents and being cared for on a better level than living in cages and barely having enough space to turn around.

It also could have been an organization specifically for special needs kitties. There are a couple of houses in NC specifically for blind cats. One woman who I've worked closely with provides sanctuary for about 30 blind cats. Do you have ANY idea how much money it costs to provide proper upkeep? If she was renting a building then it would take A LOT MORE MONEY than it already costs her. You have no idea how much things stack up such as medicine, vet visits, routine shots, litter, food, detergent, etc etc.

The Humane Society and Animal Control Centers receive money from the government and other large funding sources. Most of the NO KILL (which, human society is NOT a no kill shelter, they kill old cats and special needs cats instead of trying to find homes for them - big stories in the news lately, look it up) shelters work out of foster homes.

I'm sorry if this sounds flamey, it's not meant to. This is something I feel very passionately about and most people don't really know what goes on behind the scenes of animal care facilities and within organizations devoted to animals.
