Deb: corned beef and cabbage is a traditional thing to make for St. Pat's day. Corned beef is essentially a brisket that's been "corned" i.e., marinated with a brine and pickling spices. You then boil the ____ out of it. (I usually put it in a crock-pot--thanks for the reminder Stacielee~) It gets very tender after several hours, then you take the beef out and cook the veggies. The other two things I usually cook with it are carrots and red rose potatoes in the same juice. The grocery store sells them pretty cheap this time of year (I saw point cut corned beef for 88 cents a pound at Ralphs). There are two types--point cut and flat cut. The flat cut is more expensive, more lean and "flatter." We actually like the cheaper point cut better.

The cabbage (which I don't eat, but will make for Mom) takes only a few minutes in the broth at the end. It's really a yummy, inexpensive meal to make.

WOW that sounds yummy. Maybe I will crockpot it on Tuesday. I am not sure about the cabbage part, but the rest sounds super yummo!!
Thanks

I would forego the cabbage too if Mom were not going to be there--yuck! (Cabbage is only good in coleslaw!)

The other stuff IS super yummo -- I like ketchup on my corned beef too. Oh, and if you get ambitious, make some cornbread with the whole thing (even like one of those Jiffy ones) -- it's really good.

My kids love the Jiffy cornbread. When I make taco soup or stew I always make cornbread.

Do I just cook it all darn day on low?

Yep--when you open up the package there will be a separate 'spice' package. Dump in the roast and then open the spice package and dump that in the crock-pot too. Cover with water and turn on high till it gets cooking, then turn down to low and let it cook all day. Warning--it will shrink up some so be prepared--I usually try to buy the biggest one I can find because of this (and because cold corned beef sandwiches are yummo too!)

I am so hungry so please keep talking about food. I had a wheat type reaction last night and had to choose if it was mashed taters, rice crackers, or the new meds. The new meds are not causing racing heart so it was the rice crackers or taters. No food until I am sure all is safe

STINK, my birthday is on the 24th of October. I so wanted a stress free birthday. If anyone has plans for that week let me know as I am open to anything that gets me out of the house. I was planing breakfast with Lilo and Stitch or at the Steakhouse, lunch at Taste Pilot's then dinner at Ariels with the Halloween events for the finally. I want to do Casey Jr, Bobsleds, and Tower of Terror. Not sure what as I do not have park hours yet.

How are things going for the April mini meet and the October one, I am so busy reading the new posts that I never get back to the first page.

Cheryl thanks. I will have to start it when I get up in the morning. on high & then switch it to low when I leave for work.

Today has been the longest day!! But the training is coming along nicely. I like it when the guys just get it the first time & I don't have to explain myself over & over again.

Corned beef dinner is very YUMMO! I have not made one in forever.

Good thing training is coming along well..... Today I honestly, for the first time EVER heard the excuse "My new puppy ate it" :scared1: Seriously?? Work, gotta love it

I thought that was an excuse my 7th grader used?
And we don't have any animals...:confused3

On the hotel thing, when it looked like we weren't going to have a conference room at Hojo for the night we had I started calling around and the Fairfield Inn had one and asked to be able to make a bid for our business. Does anyone want to head up a hotel search committee? Also, do we all have to stay at the same hotel? Just wonderin--Kelly and Dawn, did you think it impacted your stay?

I know for me if there was a great AP rate at paradise pier I wouldn't mind staying there so I get Magic Morning--otherwise with an AP I don't have that opportunity. And then again, it might be that I might be staying DVC if I can get our dates. (In fact, that's what I would probably do--otherwise why have it?)

The Hojo conf room is great, but I think if our group grows much more we will have outgrown that room and will have to consider an alternative.

Hojos was ok for me, not complaints but there was nothing extraordinary either. I would be willing to look at hotels for our next trip. I'd definitely keep in mind group rates, AAA discounts, etc.

I would love to stay on-site! Of course I would really like to stay at the GCH but that place is SO expensive! I'd even love the Disneyland hotel. Imagine, you just walk out, hop on the monorail, and HEY you're in Disneyland!:goodvibes I would not mind squeezing with five ladies, I did it this past trip.

Cheryl, I agree - I was thinking probably around the same thing. I didn't mind terribly the Hojo, but it did not really meet my needs either. I would love to have MM and staying on site is the only way with an AP. If some ladies stayed on site, they could bring in other ladies for MM who had APs - I think five per person, right? The safety of walking back did not affect me as I was usually walking by myself anyway (no roomies).

MM would totally rock!

I've only read this last page right now (we're about to head out the door to try to see Bolt), but I saw the reply to Cheryl's mention of the AP rate....YES. There was a 149 rate for PP, and of course you have to add the resort fee, but especially if you have the max (5) in a room, that comes down to relatively little, and everyone registered to the room gets MM, and the package service so you wouldn't have to carry souvenirs (to bring home as bribes to kids left at home) all day, etc....I would have enjoyed that.

But of course no one knows if that's available until relatively short notice before a trip...however now that it's been brought up, the idea of not everyone staying at one place, maybe it wouldn't seem as odd as if someone had just said "dude, not staying at the group hotel" in the last month before the trip.

If the Disneyland hotel or Paradise Pier hotel has good AP rates, I'd definitely want to stay there!

What is the resort fee? And do you have to add tax to that as well?

I don't think I could handle sharing a bathroom with 4 other ladies. :rotfl2: And since I am weird and won't share a bed, 3 to a room is the max for me. And since 3 to a room won't bring down that price low enough, guess you will all find me slumming it in one of the Harbor hotels.

HOLY MOLY - It is SNOWING here right now :scared1: Can I just mention that I am so OVER winter!
:scared1: Come here for a visit. We are supposed to have a high of 76 here tomorrow. :thumbsup2

Well, maybe we try a year with people staying different places and see what happens? Or pick two choices? We will have to see about a meeting place though.

If you (or someone else) wouldn't mind taking on the task, it might be a good idea (I think Dawn suggested) to check out rates for the proposed dates BEFORE the dates are finalized--there might be enough of a fluctuation to warrant choosing one date over another.
The problem with that is some hotels don't have their rates for that far out yet.
For example, I called PP hotel and they won't have rates for Feb or March 2010 available until this summer the CM said. And we cannot wait that long to finalize dates as some ladies need to know as soon as possible for work and/or their spouses work.

Maybe everyone should just book where ever they want to stay at. Not even try to fool with picking one or even two places. :confused3

I posted my pics to the website.

Talk to you all later.

steph
Can't wait to check them out!

Beth~ So when you let your two oldest run amok :lmao: (sp), do you give them money?? Jordan has a phone, so I am sure he would be just fine. Although I sure he would spend the majority of his time on ToT..crazy kid.
Just a couple dollars for some snacks. We let them go for 2 or 3 hour increments, picking one park (no park hopping), they had to stay together and keep their phone on, and check in at the set time and meeting place.

Love the shoes.....do they come in any other colors?
You mean like DIS lime green? :rotfl:

Hey Vegas Gals.....it looks like I will be making a stop there this weekend. My brother plays rugby and a group of his friends are going and want me to join them. So I will be having a Vegas weekend. :cool1:
How fun!! Any free time to meet up?

Hi Ladies!

Trying to catch up, and I should have multi-qouted. Oh well...........I will try and remember.

Cheryl, I'm making corned beef and cabbage on Tuesday too. I'm going to also give a try at Irish Soda Bread. Something that I like to do to my beef, is while the veggies are cooking, smear on some mustard, sprinkle about a 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and a light sprinkling of ground cloves. Place it in the oven for about 15 minutes or so at 350*. Yummers!! Pat some butter on the cabbage and potatoes too after they are done. :rolleyes1
I'm also so glad to hear your Mom is coming home!! :goodvibes

Hotels...... I'm all for sharing a room at the PP!! :woohoo: I can do some sleuthing too on some hotel choices. What would be nice to know, is how many rooms we did have reserved at Hojos? 15 or so? I also didn't know that PPI has the entertainment rate. That is really good to know. I wonder if there are others with the entertainment rate within walking distance??

Heather, I went to the party last year. We had alot of fun, but the time went by really fast. :headache: They had certain areas set up for parties and dancing. Some areas also had games for kids. Lots of candy, and it seemed like every ride was open except for Grizzley Rapids. If you go, the best thing to do, is get back to Midway Mania first, and then start your Trick Or Treating. Most people tend to make their way back slowly to PP, so it is a good place to start. Not real busy for awhile. We went to the party, the day after Beth and Wendy, on a Friday, and although it was busy, it was nothing like what just experienced on the Ladies trip. I tell you what though.....................when we were waiting to get in through the gates, the lines were scary!!!!! I mean long long long. :scared1: Every gate out to the middle of the esplande. I thought....................uh oh!:guilty: But after we were finally let in, it seemed like nothing. :thumbsup2

I need to go back and see what I have forgotten.

I think you all should stay at the Disneyland Hotel based on current prices.
currently it is $159 for Paradise Pier which is a longer walk and around $189 for Disneyland Hotel. Assuming prices go up you still could do rooms at 4 ladies sharing beds at $50 a night each and have the early entry. Even though you cannot guarantee that the prices will stay the same you know you probably could get either hotel for under $50 a night plus tax and it would be nice to stay there for a change.

Now please pass the popcorn, I am trying to diet but it aint working, lol. them chips are calling me loudly.:rolleyes1

How could I forget this.

Thankyou again for your thoughts and prayers for my Sister. I really appreciate it. :grouphug:
I thought it would be cool to find her a really sassy hat to help lift her spirits, and cover her head when she loses her hair. Or a really beautiful scarf. :thumbsup2

No complaints from me for Hojo's either. And I was very impressed by the way they handled my "rash" after the fact. But with that said, I wouldn't mind moving to another place. Close to the entrance would work for me. And if we could swing a great rate onsite, even better. As you know, I don't mind more peeps to a room. We did 5 last time. Doesn't bother me.

Unless the price is good, I will be slumming it on Harbor as well (where are those shoes again?). Even with 5 to a room.

Personally, I do like everyone, or the majority staying at one place. Makes it nicer to have choices as far as walking buddies and such. And with everyone at one place, kinda makes it seem more of a group. JMO.

Yes

Im hoping to be able to. I just need to get the details and then hopefully can meet up with you and possibly Jane and Amy too. Got to get the 411 from those taking me first.

Nice, I just invited myself to be one of your roomies next year...:rolleyes1

Mel: your brown sugar things sounds good. hmmm...the possiblities are endless for this corned beef I am going to try and make....

I wouldn't mind checking on some rooms. I know when I have tried to check before you usually have to wait till closer to summer for after next year but I can at least check to see which ones have conference rooms and breakfasts etc.

I know that DI doesn't have a conference room but it DOES have a breakfast.

I stayed at the Ramada Inn Main Gate and that one is really nice and larger and has a breakfast as well. I could check on that one as well as BWPPI.

I know for me I didn't mind being at a different one cuz at least I had mom but I wouldn't want to be by myself so I def see Linda's point. I would want to be at the same hotel if I was by myself. And I am with Beth. I need a bed to myself cuz I am a bed HOG lol and mom and I usually just share a room together cuz I have so many medical deals that I don't want to have to trouble anyone. Sometimes I can end up being in the bathroom half the night (sorry tmi I know) but I would just rather have a room with just her and then I don't have to worry about inconveniencing anyone by keeping them up or anything. But otherwise I am up for sharing a hotel or staying at a couple or whatever works.

I am all for calling around and getting back to you guys. That's the LEAST I can do since I didn't do much this year! :)

Oh and LOVE corned beef and cabbage. And I usually DO do the cabbage just for the flavor and dh eats it but I don't. Hate the stuff LOL but I add red potatoes, carrotts and the cabbage and then he eats it and believe it or not the girls even eat it and then I like dijon mustard. YUM. It just takes FOREVER to cook.

Anyway off to watch AR tonight. Have fun chatting and see yall tomorrow. :)

I definately can't handle sharing a room with that many women - too much shower coordination to figure out on vacation! Though one of my friends who I am trying to commit to come next year & log onto the board & stop lurking gets up for work @ 4 am!!! Likely will be slumming it on Harbor right there with you Beth. (Unless my OTHER lurking friend can get her dad's DVC point for that time... - hint, hint, nudge, nudge if you're reading this)

Man, I really need some more friends willing to commit to the technology age and admit their disney obsession!

Maybe everyone should just book where ever they want to stay at. Not even try to fool with picking one or even two places. :confused3

I stayed at a friend's brother's house the first night & then at a separate hotel the 2nd. I didn't feel disconnected at all, though I am a local-ish & did have my car so that probably helped. I personally wouldn't go outside Disney security's area by myself at night in Anaheim. A closer hotel is better for me than further.

You mean like DIS lime green? :rotfl:

:rotfl: That would be awesome! Visit Vegas one night and have a whole herd of women walking down the strip in lime green stripper shoes!!!

I'm going to also give a try at Irish Soda Bread. Something that I like to do to my beef, is while the veggies are cooking, smear on some mustard, sprinkle about a 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and a light sprinkling of ground cloves. OK, PMing you now. That sounds too tasty and WAY easier than my g-ma's recipe!

OT Question for the Vegas Divas: Have any of you eaten at 9 Fine Irishmen in the NYNY? If not, try it out! Though I imagine St Pat's is crazy there. Let me know though if any of you make it to there on Tues. Would love to know for next year (& possibly use as amunition for getting my DH to take me there for my March B-day)...

Mel: your brown sugar things sounds good. hmmm...the possiblities are endless for this corned beef I am going to try and make....

Invite yourself all you want. The more the merrier. But I don't think we can do more than 5 to a room. That would be agains fire codes.
