Girl Scouts Vests in Disneyland?

I am taking a troop of 8 Cadettes or Disneyland for the Y.E.S. program. Celebrate the completion of their Silver Awards. I was thinking the girls should wear their vests. Is this a good idea? Does Disneyland allow this? I know they have rules about costumes on guests over 9, but I wasn't sure if the GS vest would be considered costumey. Also, do you think Town Hall would give them Celebration buttons to recognize their Silver Award celebration?

Thanks in advance.

Lorie

I don't see why the vests would be a problem. If the rest of their clothing is normal, the vests should be fine. They may even make good conversation starters while the girls are in lines. They can get the "I'm Celebrating!" buttons at City Hall or at most of the shops. Some CMs carry them, too.

Athletic groups wear jerseys, schools wear their colors or matching t-shirts, I've seen groups with specialty matching jackets. GS vests should be fine.

Congratulations to your scouts. My Daisy hopes to be there someday.

My first thought when I read this was "Cadettes are in late middle/ early high school are they ok with wearing the vests to disney world?" I don't think anyone in my troop even owned the vests at that age (have one from juniors, didn't buy them after that)

Disney wouldn't mind though. The custome rule has a few purposes but mostly to prevent people from pretending to be characters or from being able to conceal items in bulky costumes. Girl scout uniforms wouldn't do either of these.

I agree that the vests are totally okay to wear at the park.

I love it when GS wear their gear, especially when they're older Scouts. I wish the girls still wore the whole uniform instead of just the vest when they're little -it's so cute!!

Have a wonderful trip! The Scouts and Leaders earned it!

There are Disney clubs that wear vests in the parks all the time so I think you'll be fine.

It would be fine for them to wear vests. The sign I read at security yesterday said 14 for costumes even. I thought it was much younger. I do know that my newly bridged to Senior Girl Scout daughter would MUCH prefer a fun Girl Scout shirt over her vest/sash. She hates wearing her sash in public. Also, we have a reasonably tricky time with pins and such falling off just in real life. On/off rides and backpacks on/off all day, may do a number on them.

Have fun on the trip. Our girls just returned from a trip to Long Beach and then took a cruise to Catalina Island/Ensenada. There they met with a group of Girl Guides and had such a fun day with them! It was such a fun trip for our girls! They all wore a matching shirt any time they were in public to make it easier for the chaperones to spot them, but only wore their vests/sashes on their day with the Girl Guides.

Yes to both being allowed to wear them and for the celebration buttons!

But just a thought, when I was in Girl Guides (the Canadian version of scouts, maybe?) our vests had a lot of patches sewn on them and didn't wash well, the badges and their plastic-y backs warped in washing machines. I would hate for your girls to get theirs messy. It's very easy to lean against something sticky or have someone who is just zoned out bump into you with food.

Since you've got two weeks until you go, I would do tee shirts instead.

Thank you so much for the replies. The girls were the ones who suggested wearing the vests, but none of us thought about the patches and pins falling off. Some of the girls have had trouble with that happening. Maybe we will look at t-shirts instead. I think the girls were hoping that by wearing their vests they might get some sort of extra recognition from Disneyland. I told them not to count on it, and suggested the Celebration pins, but they are optimists.

I appreciate all of the feedback and will pass it on to the girls.

I've seen pageant girls there wearing their sashes.

Am I the only one that sews on Girl Scout patches?

My troop went to Disneyland back in 2000. We weren't really celebrating anything except that we'd earned the money to go by raising it through cookie sales (several years before we decided to stop getting prizes for cookie sales and take money instead). In hindsight, that would have been an amazing way to celebrate our silver and gold awards instead of just cookie sales (and I'm fairly sure all of our parents supplemented the trip to varying degrees so it really wasn't totally an earned trip).

We didn't wear our sashes or anything to identify us as girl scouts. I guess we never really thought about doing anything. All of us were proud to be who we were. But definitely would have hesitated wearing my sash even if it had been a vest. Those pins really do fall off easily and the high awards are not easy nor cheap to replace.

I don't think they'll get nearly as much special attention as they think they might get, though, wearing their vests. The celebration buttons will garner more attention.

I concur with the idea of doing custom shirts instead of the vests.

Maybe wear them in for a photo-op. It would be such a nice picture.

Then fold them into a backpack for serious riding time.

Just a thought.

With the guy from up in AK. Because then the character would have one too!

Not sure if he is even still there but it woudl be an awesome pic if he was...

This is the Disneyland forum no AK here. Russel is in DCA though, I believe

Congrats to your girls. Ours got their silver award this year, too.

I think I would do t-shirts instead because (1) the vests get hot (which might be good depending on when you are going) and (2) Disneyland is not gentle on clothing - we have lost more pins and patches from vests over the years than I care to count.

When I take my scouts to DL they do bring their vests and wear them part of the time - most especially for photo ops. The vest to get them "attention" as people love to see scouts but there have never been any "perks" we have gotten. As for patches if they are sewn on they will be fine. Ironically my girls and I use locking pin backs we bought at Disneyland and that has kept our pins attached as well.
