I was with the same girl scout troop (same leaders and same girls) from grade 6 thru junior year of high school. In 8th grade, we went to Washington DC for 5 days. in 11th grade, we went to WDW for a week (we also went to Gatorland, Sea World, Cypress Gardens and a Citrus Orchard)

My DD's brownie troop went on a 'big trip' to Rocking Horse Ranch in New York for a long weekend.

Our only out-of-state trip was to the Great Wolf Lodge, which might not be what you'd consider a big trip.

My Brownie troop the past two years did the sleepover inside Sea World. It wasnt that expensive. One of the best experiences of my life!!:thumbsup2

My DD's 8th grade troop lobbied and lobbied for WDW, lol! I just don't think her leader wanted to do it. They are now freshman but the troop is disbanding, so they are spending the money by going to another city (2 hrs away) to see Wicked, have a nice dinner out and spend the night. The remaining of the money will be donated. Which is a good thing, but not what the girls wanted. I very much wanted her to be able to go on a fun trip with the hard earned money they had. My in-laws live close to Savannah, so we've done that trip a few times, so she hasn't missed out on that.

I'd love to see other ideas as well, hopefully my DD9's troop will get to do a big trip someday.

Big trips? What about the traditional camping. I was in GS from 1st thru 11th grade and we never once took a big trip. OUr trips involved going to various GS campgrounds within an hour's drive.

So we're 1st year Juniors and we're sleeping at Old Sturbridge Village in Nov. I'm hoping to plan a trip to New York to Watkins Glen.

DD12 is going to DC for the 100th anniversary this year!

Now keep this in mind while reading my trips.... I am in my mid 40's and took these trips when I was in 4th thru 9th grades.

My leader (Cadettes) would do big trips every other year and take last year Juniors. I went in 4th grade because my Mom was an assistant leader but I still needed to raise the money like any other girl.

I went to Stockbridge MA, WDW (we met at a church and invited their youth group so we could fill the bus - no flying - and it opened more fund raising oportunities than GS allowed) and my last year we went to the US Virgin Islands.

Does your counsel do "big" trips. My daughter went to Yellowstone in 8th grade. This summer some of the girls did a European tour. My daughter did an Outward Bound trip to Costa Rica that was contracted through girl scouts.

My girls are second year Brownies. We are starting to save now to go to Savannah, GA when they are in 5th grade.

Our biggest ones for my 7th grade troop have been an overnight at the Philadelphia Zoo and in June the went to Great Wold Lodge. Next June we are planning on attending the 100th Anniversary event at Liberty State Park which is a sleeper and on the high school.

We have Savannah and Disney on the list for 9th or 10th grade. We can do Savannah as a council trip and averages $650pp.

We are planning to start extra fundraisers in the Spring

Had my meeting tonight and we're doing lots of planning!!

One girl asked if we could go to the Twin Tower memorial, place flowers and do a rubbing. How great of an idea that 9 yos came up with that idea! All the girls thought it would be a great idea so we're going to plan it probably drive and do it in 1 day, but we'll see what they plan!! I was just so proud of them for agreeing on this amazing type of trip!

My SIL's father passed in the Towers (which they don't know) and I think it would be great to do a rubbing of his name for her! It would really connect them with it.

Then they voted to do a halloween party for another troop so I had to scrap my entire meeting plan and start planning this party. This is the best part - they have a budget of $0.00!! They have to plan this party with NO money - use their resources wisely! They want to do a costume party, pumpkin carving (girls will bring their own pumpkins), games and activities. We'll see.

Our Boy and Girl Scount is plaing WAshington D.C. trip, Atlanta, Trip, and South Carolina.

Camping? We camped ONCE - most of us hated it and have no desire to do that again! Even the girls were not crazy about the bugs and dirt of camping.
We have done Great Wolf Lodge 2 or 3 times and I think we are going to either Washington or Boston next. Council has a whole list of travel companies that arrange all sorts of trips for the girl scouts to take.

Does your council have GS camps where you can lodge camp? We platform tented last year and the girls weren't crazy about it, so we compromised on lodge camping - we still cook over the fire and go hiking, but we sleep inside. It's a good compromise!!

We're 2nd year Brownies and we just went camping a few weeks ago. It was a Council campground and we were in cabins. The girls had so much fun we're planning to go again in the Spring. We're talking about going to Savannah either in 4th or 5th grade. Since we're in the Atlanta area, Savannah isn't too big a trip for us.

They have that-we have done that once too. I am not crazy about that either but it the girls decide they want to do that again i would suck it up and do that but i hope they dont! Now if they want to camp in a hotel where i have a nice bed thats no problem lol.

Geez, these trips are making me feel like I'm a slacker as a leader! We try to do one overnight trip each year. So far we've done Miami Seaquarium, Miami MetroZoo, a dance studio right in our town and Coco Key in Orlando. Orlando was our farthest trip (3 hours), but it wasn't too expensive. Our girls aren't big on selling the nuts/candy and I'm always the one pushing hardest on cookies so we don't make a ton of money - usually around $1,000 for both sales.

This year I think we're going to do an even smaller trip, but are going to try to earn our bronze award so I'm assuming they'll vote to use lots of their money to go towards whatever service project we pick. Who knows though - they might pick a service project that requires more work then money and want to go on a big trip!

In the back of my mind, in case they do want to do a bigger trip, I've been thinking about Savannah, Disney for the 100th anniversary of GS and Sea World. There is a GS camping ground in the Keys that I'd like to learn more about, but neither of us have our camping certification so we'd have to recruit another leader to come with us.

Hmm...as 3rd grade Brownies, overnight at SeaWorld, camping trips, as Senior/Ambassador Girl Scouts New York City (from California), Lake Tahoe, they are going to Hawaii this summer.

Remember every troop is different - my older daughter's troop is going to DC for the 100th anniversary and I know several troops who had no interest in going. Camping and trip taking aren't for all girls. I've got 2 girls in my troop who never come with us overnight, but they'll help us plan.

I know another troop that camps - TENTS! - at least once a month!! Even in the winter - did I mention we live in MA!! Where it snows! Yup they go snowflake camping in the snow! Cadettes.
