My BFF's DH is being promoted to colonel. We are going to the ceremony. I am thinking about getting a nice bottle of champagne for him.

Anyone have a better idea for a gift? I am at a loss.

TIA!

A bucket of fried chicken seems the most appropriate gift for someone being promoted to Colonel.

Did you mean fried chicken? :)

I would suggest maybe a frame and then take a nice picture at the ceremony and then give them the picture for the frame.

my husband has been in the military 31 years-the champagne-if the drink is quiet appropriate since it is customary to "wet down" a new promotion. Once you get into the realm of other gifts-would you buy a gift for someone who was being promoted in their civilian job-if you would-get what you think is appropriate. Is he taking a command or just pinning on his birds?

Dang. Beat me to it.

Possibly a copy of "So I Married An Axe Murderer" (there's a reference).

See why I ask things of DIS members? You guys are so creative!

I may have to see what I can do about getting a fried chicken bucket as a wrapping medium... maybe with a picture of him on the side of it. Hmm...

He is not getting a command, he's just getting his birds, but they are having a reception after this promotion and my friend said there will be about 130 people there. She's worried that she's not going to get to spend much time with me. lol I told her not to worry, she taught me how to work a room very well.

The ceremony is at West Point. My DS is beside himself that he's finally going to get to go on post. We've only taken him near the gates before, never inside.

Of course I did...glad I could ruin the joke with my spelling ineptitude.

Technically you didn't spell a word wrong, just used the wrong word. :thumbsup2 If you spelled anything wrong the DIS Spelling Police would have been all over you.

The chicken bucket turned out great!

I found a picture of my friend from last summer and I turned it into a sepia print. I wrote above it, "The Colonel's Chicken" and I cut a cross on the top so the asti spumanti that I bought would stick out of it. I opted out of real champagne because I thought about what they liked. While I was willing to buy a good champagne, I know that the colonel and his wife like the cheap, sweet stuff better.

Now I can't wait for them to see it!

Thank you for such a stellar idea!

the chicken thing is hysterical-i might have to steal that when a good friend of mine pins in the late summer-ive been giving him a hard time about the "silver chickens" so it fits totally. Its cool they are doing it at the Point-the Acadamys have a totally different vibe than any other type of installation-enjoy it.

Not only did my friend love the gift, all of the other colonels who were there thought it was hysterical. They said they'll have to remember that for other friends who are promoted.

The ceremony was beautiful. The commander of his department spoke first and introduced the dean of his department. He spoke about how he met his wife and how they finally married after 6 years, most of which were spent apart because he was stationed away and she was in med school. When he was finished with the "this is your life" portion of the presentation, he read a message acknowledging the promotion. After his wife and DDs changed his epilets, my friend spoke and gave flowers to all of the women in his life and tiffany boxes to his girls. Then the most important part, according to my friend.... we ate.

It's funny, when you're friends with someone for over 30 years, their family is just like your family. I loved seeing everyone on both sides of their family and I can't believe I'm already home from the festivities.

Thank you again for the wonderful recommendation! I gave this message board full credit for the creativity.
