Gift Horse...or Simply Bad Housekeeping?

Just got back from OKW...when we checked in there was an almost full half gallon of ice cream in freezer. It was opened with just a few tablespoons missing...maybe not the favorite flavor of the prior guest. But why did the housekeepers leave it there? Did they possibly think we would consume ice cream left behind by a stranger? So...should I be appreciative and not have looked that gift horse in the mouth? Or should I have complained about the housekeeping? (I did not complain). It was just weird, that's all. Has this ever happened to anyone?

i dont understand why guest leave food behind, we never leave left over food, we toss it ourselves, because we think housekeeping shouldnt have to clean(toss all the food) out of the fridge everytime someone stays in the room, yes clean (wipe ) the fridge. then housekeeping can give more time to the important things to be done. and new guest shouldnt have to toss out my left over food either, what happens if that room is not rented out, yikes, mold.....

please guest dont leave food in the fridge, no one is going to eat it and new guest shouldnt have to toss it either they are on vacation too.::yes:: :wave2:

Well, of course, housekeeping obviously had a slip up, but I certainly wouldn't lodge a complaint for such a simple thing. We all goof up from time to time, and cleaning many units daily, these things will happen.

I do throw away all opened food products, and if we're driving, I take the soda and extra bottled water. If we're flying, I generally just leave the unopened product...I hate to throw it away. And while housekeepers aren't supposed to take the products, part of me hopes someone, somewhere, gets some use out of it.

I have left unopened food before because we couldn't take it with us and I hated to throw it out. I too hoped that someone would take it and use it (it was sealed and not something that would go bad). All the opened stuff I threw out.

It may have been left behind unopened, unused and housekeeping decided to have a few spoons of it before throwing it away, but forgot about it. It is a very small thing to worry about, but it does prove that no one is double checking housekeeping at OKW or they would have seen the ice cream. Someone should be coming in the rooms after housekeeping is done and check the room. At any rate it is nothing to be too concerned about and not worth complaining about. I have never found any food in the unit that I rented anywhere. I do remove the ice from the ice-maker box and let it start over making ice. When I first enter the unit that is the one of the first things I do, I get ice from the ice machines outside to start my stay off until the icemaker has time to make ice.

During my first stay at the BCV, I discovered a nice, dried up roast in the oven! :earseek: Not pleasant!

I think the housekeeping staff do a pretty good job. After many stays I really have no complaints. I did notice that all the BCV housekeeping staff were leaving with backpacks and shopping bags that were pretty full. I think they are allowed to take unopened food. I left laundry stuff and a few cans.

One of our neighbors at the BCV offered us their "leftovers" as they were preparing to leave...ynopened cereal, milk, gatorade, etc. I thought it was a nice gesture, and we took and used it.

I bet the icecream was just overlooked and not a big deal.

I spoke to Jackie many months ago when trying to arrange a food bank pickup for 2nd harvest of leftover DVC food. She said mousekeeping is allowed to keep unopened, non-alcholic food and beverages.

I generally put it all together on the counter.

Just FYI

We have given unopened food to housekeeping, to the front desk & the the bellman. No one has ever refused our goodies!

We checked into OKW last month w/ family. There was a full ashtray on the balconey the sink was backed up and dirty and the worst was that there were orange peels in the disposal. Made me feel kinda creepy not to mention embarressed having first time guests w/ us to have wintness that.

To me, this all ties back to posts I've read in which people say that since Mousekeeping only cleans their room every few days, they either don't tip or leave only a pittance.

The problem is that the DVC housekeepers must make the same salary as the other resort housekeepers (and in some locations work both DVC and non-DVC rooms). If they've gotten the idea that DVC residents are lousy tippers compared to regular residents, well, that's pretty demotivating.

I'm not saying that we should all tip the same as if our rooms are cleaned every day. But we should recognize that our rooms are larger and more complex to clean up before we arrive (kitchens, jacuzzis etc.), and if we want a minimum-wage staff to take excellent care of us we should be a little bit generous, not a little bit stingy.

Maybe it was not left by a guest.
One trip back in 99 when we arrived we were told our room was ready. We opened it up and to our surprise we startled two maintenance men watching TV on the couch. They quickly turned it off and shuffled out mumbling something about checking the AC.
5 minutes later a knock on the door, they left a sandwich and coke in the fridge.

a beer hand on like the christmas tree ,help with the $$$

Gee, I always leave the leftover beer in the fridge. I was sure that wouldn't get thrown away. Maybe I should re-think that.

... I know some of you are saying, "LEFTOVER BEER?!!"

LOL My DW and I have each drank a beer early in the morning on the way to the airport to avoid this tragedy. Leave no beer behind!

Oops....Last trip we made it all the way to Georgia when we remembered that we forgot to take our ice cream out of the freezer...don't think that the ice cream found was ours....we had already made quite a dent in it!
(We did get everything else cleared out...just forgot the freezer!):smooth:

My guess is that either the housekeeper forgot to check the freezer or it was part of her food and she was keeping it in there while she went about her business.

Call me crazy, but I don't think I'd be really bothered if I walked into my unit and found a couple of employees taking a break, as long as they weren't laying all over the beds etc. Sitting on the couch watching TV or sitting at the table eating your lunch in AC when you work in FLA in the summer is no real tragedy to me.

We leave food (unopened) in the fridge in hopes that the housekeepers can take it. I'd rather that than throw perfectly good, unopened food away.
