Gift for 16yr. old niece?

I'm really at a loss for a birthday gift for my 16yr. old niece/Goddaughter. Anyone have any suggestions for something special. She is a great kid, very good student and on the Varsity Softball team. Of course she is anxiously awaiting starting her driving lessons. Jewelry is out as she can't wear it pitching.

How about paying for some driving classes? No way did I want to teach my teenagers to drive. I would have been banging back Jack daniels by the time they got their license. I gladly forked over the dough for the lessons.

I think that turning 16 is a special time that merits a sentimental gift. A nice piece of jewelry fits the bill perfectly.

My DD does karate and cannot wear jewelry when participating. But my mom buys all her granddaughters a birthstone ring for their 16th birthdays. Even though DD rarely wears the ring, the true value is that it came from Gramma and is part of a tradition that binds DD with all of her female cousins on my side of the family. And DD always has a nice piecer of jewelry to wear when a special occasion calls for it.

The big hit gift with my niece was a coach bag.- I just could afford a wristlet for her(it was Christmas) and she LOVED it. I mean to the point of me getting a thank you card- which I have never received from her before. And I've seen her using it too.

For my nieces 16th birthday I went to a party store and found a Sweet 16 Hawaiian Leis. We went big and got a $20 bill and 30 $1 bills. I took the money and rolled half of it up and tied it with curling ribbon and then I folded the other like a fan and tied it. Then I tied it all on the leis. I put the $20 front and center the others all around it.

It turned out great. She wore it all night at her party.
It was a different way to give her money!

Your niece sounds alot like my niece. She will be 16 in June and I was just thinking about what to get. She also play softball, basketball, etc. and is really not into jewelry, perfume, purses, etc. She is a jeans and t-shirt gal. All she really wants is a car for her b'day. I really like the lei idea with the money. Thanks for starting this thread!

How about a night out on the town with a couple of her close friends, limo, dinner, night in a hotel? That would be a really special sweet 16 or use that $$ towards a car. Good luck

I second this. My 16 year old cousin lives for this stuff, and Hollister too.

Seriously , I got her a really cute pink and orange jacket and shorts for her 16th birthday, Victoria Secret pink collection. When she unwrapped the paper and seen the V.S. box she couldn't rip it open fast enough.

Her mom laughed, she said well at least you know she likes it.

since jewelry is out, how about a Tiffany keyring?

imho, anything Tiffany is "special" & especially suited to milestone occassions (like sweet sixteen ). there is a large selection online, starting from around $70, & many can be engraved. just about every girl knows that "blue box" , & would love to have anything that one of them can hold. btw, while i loved just about every one on the website, the star on page 6 is soooo pretty & engravable).
add in the comment that she is going to be driving soon just makes it perfect, IMHO.

Wow, great suggestions here. My soon-to-be 16 DD's ultimate list would probably include: the Coach purse (or a Kate Spade), Ugg boots, anything from Tiffany's, Juicy Couture perfume, digital camera (or digital video camera), cell phone with all the bells and whistles (the kind with a keypad), Silver (the brand, not the color) jeans, another North Face jacket, and the entire "X-Files" series on DVD.
