Gift for 10 year old DD

DD11 got a make up kit from Ulta last Christmas that was one of her favorite gifts. I won't let her wear make-up out, but she's had fun "playing" in it and likes to watch tutorials on YouTube for different styles. She's actually gotten very good at doing a nice, natural look. It was also a big hit at the last sleepover when the girls took turns using the eyeliner pencil to draw silly mustaches on themselves.:rolleyes1

Do you have a JoAnn's Fabric store? They have great classes for kids and gift cards for that are always a hit. DD has done knitting, sewing, and several cake decorating classes.

Gift cards for spa services - DD loves to get a pedicure and have fun designs on her toenails.

Movie theater gift cards.

Art supplies, art lessons, etc.

A cute robe and slippers.

Fun jewelry - DD loves bracelets, necklaces, etc.

We love to give experiences rather than stuff. Manicures, movie tickets, lessons for art or music or sports of any kind. A trip of whatever your budget allows, one night at a local hotel, up to a week at WDW.....whatever fits your budget. Gift cards to somewhere like build a bear, or a craft store or a pottery place.

10 is the age we gave DS his first phone as well.

DD just turned 10 last week. Among her gifts were:

craft sets...the rainbow loom among them and she loves it
sharpie markers
clothes from Justice (the store all the girls around here love)
Target gift cards
Furby Boom (interacts with an Ipad app)
books

She would also have liked some more Lego Friends, Itunes gift card, anything having to do with crafts. She loves bookstore gift cards, but she reads constantly so most of her books are from the library.

edited to add: how could I forget Duct Tape? DD got some set of patterned tape in dispensers as well as some individual rolls. There are lots of brands out there now that are not as heavy duty as real duct tape, but the real stuff is desired also.
I have seen some great ideas on here I will be considering for Christmas :-)

I would stay away from Justice for a 10 year old- here that is junior high age (i know some places its still 5th grade though)and while justice is big in grade school it is not big at all in jr high- some 6th graders wear it but after that It really is not "in".

* ditto on the rainbow loom -- that's HUGE here
* other craft things -- I have a beginning sewing one to give one 10 YO niece and remember getting a potholder craft set and beginning crosspoint at that age. There's also books about crafting with duct tape which might be easy and fun.
* games -- another 10YO niece is getting a Disney scrabble game I picked up on sale, so think about games like dominoes, skip bo, scrabble, apples to apples and so on.
* movie GCs
* cooking or baking stuff -- MIL scored a book on mini baking/casseroles and along with some ramekins, makes a perfect gift for my niece
* target GCs to go shopping for herself
* fun nail polish or lip gloss (provided parents allow that) plus flip flops
* her own journal

Turning 10 here is 4th grade! LOL my DD turns 10in a few days and she is in the right grade for her age and that's 4th.

I know different places have different cut offs (only found that out on these boards, I always thought everyplace was the same!) but lots of 10 year olds are in 6th grade here due to the cut off date and that is jr high.

:) Vera Bradley Mini Hipster or Frannie. If you want a larger bag for sleep overs or weekend trips...then small duffle or Miller bag. I would try to get it monogrammed. VB is always a good one around here. My nieces like the lunch bags

I never pay full price and usually VB runs a good sale on many of their items on the website.

Everyone has great ideas

Books (my DD just finished "Wonder" which I read too - highly recommend)

Oh, I cried like a baby when I read that - my DD and I both loved it, too.

Some other books to consider: 39 clues series, Sisters Grimm books, some of the Shannon Hale (Princess Academy, Palace of Stone, Rapunzel's Revenge, Calamity Jack) books, or the Cornelia Funke books

Also, consider non-Friends Lego sets. My DD loves Legos, but not the Friends ones.

10 is junior high age??? Middle school, yes, but junior high? if age 10 is 6th/7th grade that means schools as a regular practice would be graduating 12th grade classes of 15/16 year olds?

I teach high school (12th grade honors and AP English), and from my experience (national conferences) and interactions with teachers around the country, this is by no means the norm.

My 8 year old (grade 3) loves Justice but my 12 year old (grade 7) is not interested in most Justice items. The older dd will wear some basic pieces (camis, shorts, etc), but nothing with Justice emblazoned across it.

However, Justice is a fun place to shop (with the toys, jewelry, posters, etc), and I would think most 10 year olds regardless of school grade could find an item or two at the store she would enjoy.

Middle school and jr high are the same thing here- grades 6,7 & 8. Grade school is k-5, jr high 6-8 and high school 9-12.. And yes-some 16 year olds are in 12th grade, my daughter will be one of them. For the first 1/3 of 12th grade she will be 16. She went to school on time, did not skip any grades and is exactly where she should be grade/age wise. 10 year olds are in 6th grade. Our cut off is in dec. so if the kids are born before that for the first 1/3 of the school kindergarten kids will be 4 years old.

That is how it is here, my dses have birthdays before the Dec cut off so my one was and my other will be 10 when starting 6th grade.

I don't know what the OP's situation is, but I would agree that if she is in 6th grade Justice may be out for clothes. If she is in 4th or even 5th I think its still cool. I don't have any more dd's in Jr. high so I honestly don't know.

Does she have her own camera? Is she into photo or video editing, maybe software for that if she is.
Certain book series? My dd loved The Warrior Cats at that age.
American Girl doll stuff
Gift cards to favorite clothes stores
Gift cards for movies or fast food restaurants
Room re-do, new bedding, curtains and accessories
A kitten :)

Nail art kits got big with my DD12 and her friends around that age, and they still use them. Also, those glitter tattoo kits they sell at Joann's. And duct tape & duct tape project books. That's been a big thing with the kids for a few years now, especially the craftier types.

At the higher end, an e-reader would make a fabulous gift for a child that age that enjoys reading. Many (probably most) public libraries have e-book lending portals and DD's Nook has saved us a ton of shelf space and trips to the library. A relatively inexpensive but full-function digital camera is another idea, because girls that age seem to be all about pictures of everyone and everything, even those who don't have Facebook or Instagram or other means of sharing those pics.

Our DD turned 10 last week and her "big gift" was the disney infinity kit for the wii. So far, she loves it. It really is a cute game and can allow others to purchase small attachment pieces for it.

Based on the following horrifying article, I don't want DD to be on FB until she's graduated college!!! Unrealistic, I know, but seriously how does a parent guard against this type of invasion of privacy??

http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/sexting-shame-and-suicide-20130917

I don't think that article is relevant to a 10-year old having a FB account. The article talks about illegal activities in general being captured on a phone and shared on social media. Illegal is illegal and teenage drinking is something that parents need to discuss with their kids no matter if he/she has a FB account.

How about a subscription to the American Girl magazine? My DD9 loves to get mail, and it is a nice, wholesome magazine full of crafts and fun articles about other girls her age (no dating advice or celebrity gossip stuff).
