Gift Cards???

Are disney Gift cards a good idea? We will be going on our 1st Disney trip this May. My hubby and son (3) have never been and I have not been in 15 years!!! I don't want money to be short so I was thinking of asking family to get me a Disney gift card for Christmas!
Where can I use them, and is it easy to use them for Food and snacks in the Parks??

I'm not too sure about the Gift Cards. I thought I read somewhere that certain places in WDW did not take them, but I could be wrong. I'm replying because I ask for a different gift - Disney Dollars. They can be purchased at a Disney Store and you can use them anywhere (Disney) on WDW property. Last year I had over $200 in Disney Dollars that I received as gifts to use in the parks and Down Town Disney. Just another suggestion if the card does not pan out. Jim

Just as a follow up, I took this information off of another thread on the DIS:

Whether it be a once-in-a-lifetime vacation experience at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Florida or the Disneyland® Resort in California, the Disney Gift Card can be used to purchase complete vacation packages or select elements, including hotel stays, theme park admission, recreation, tours, merchandise and dining.

So, whether it be a Gift Card or Disney Dollars, either one will work for you at WDW. One other thing I read while I was looking up "Disney gift cards" is that you can add funds to the card prior to your vacation. So if someone gives you a $50 card, and you want to add $25 each week before you leave, you can do that and end up with a good amount on the card. Jim

The Disney gift cards are a great idea. We used them for our August trip and have been getting more for our December trip. They are convenient to carry and we were able to use them everywhere. Now, even the resorts take them as payment. We also use Disney dollars - the kids really enjoy getting them for birthdays, Christmas etc.

My boss gave us several gift cards for our trip last month, and we could use them at any Disney restaurant or store. The only place I couldn't use it was Basin in downtown Disney, since it is not a Disney-owned store.

Thanks soooooo much for all the great info! I'm really starting to feel overwhelmed with all the trip planning. We went 3 times a year, when I was a kid and the Last time I went to WDW we just went with no planning! So much has changed in 15 years!
