Gibraltar shore excursion

£20 is $30 at the moment.

DCL is quoting $49 each so actually is a better price at the moment. But then again DCL wont leave if were on a DCL tour that runs over but they would with a taxi. At the moment this is coming up at £33 using todays exchange rate so for the extra bit of security timing wise I may still go for DCL.

What hours are you in port? We left early afternoon, but finished the tour with masses of time in hand. It is a very very small island. You are never far from the ship. Not a destination where I would worry about missing the ship sailing.

I did the last TA's so went to Gibraltar then. I have an other half though that would gladly spend around 6 hours in the Seige tunnels and wanted to fit in the Dolphin watching tour in the morning so didn't want to leave it too late but you do have a good point lol

bgula - I can't remember exactly how long the tour was - it seemed to take up the morning. There was no time pressure - we could take as long as we wanted in the cave and the tunnels.
We didn't search for a taxi. They are all the same. It is a standard trip, the same for every taxi. I cannot see why you would not 'trust' the taxi drivers! They are official ones. The £20 was per person. I think £12 is for the tour and £8 for admissions.
I don't know about infant seats, but somehow doubt they would have one. I should bring your own.

Mrshart - the cable car seems to have extremely long queue lines. Also it only takes you to one place, whereas the tours go to several.

If there is more than one ship in port that day, you should try to get off early as there are obviously only a limited number of taxis.

At the end of the tour, he dropped us in the town centre and we had coffee in a cafe and then walked back to the ship through the shopping area. Also had a look in the church on the way. Then had a late lunch on board.

I'm toying with the idea of booking ahead with one of the tour companies. They offer 2 tours at 25 and 35 pounds respectively, which includes admission. I have a question about the taxi drivers and the 20 pounds that they charge. I know from reading here that that includes admission to the sights, but does anyone have a specific list of sights that they will take you to?

For example, the place I contacted quoted 25 pounds for:

Pillars of Hercules,
St. Michael’s Cave,
the Top of the Rock,
the Apes,
the Great Siege Tunnels

35 pounds includes all of the above, plus:

Moorish Castle,
we will also drive to the Frontier Area and Europa Point via Camp Bay and Keightley Way Tunnel

Do the taxi drivers offer all of these for 20 pounds? Do you think it would be better to have something booked ahead of time so as not to miss out getting a taxi that morning? I'm a little confused about which way I should go with this.

I do have a couple of other questions for anyone who knows:

1) I can't seem to find the entry price for the WW2 tunnels. Does anyone know how much this tour costs? I've heard it's about an hour long.

2) If you take one of the taxis, do they drive you up and then down the Rock? I've heard that the cable car is a great thing to do for the view, so would that not be done with the taxi?

Thanks for everyone's time.

This was my children's favorite stop...they still talk about it often. My children were 12, 10, 8 & 6 at the time.

We a DCL excursion first thing in the morning; a 'boat trip to see the dolphins'. I do not remember what the company was called. It was very cool! The dolphins would swim right next to the boat. You could just look right over the edge and see them.

As far as seeing the rest of the island. It is REALLY easy to do the 'cab tour'...you just walk outside the port and some one will ask you if you are interested. We felt completely comfortable & safe doing this. Our tour guide was great! My DD 6 (at the time) feed and held a Barbary Ape. While our 12 year old DD was freaking out! :scared1:She hates the Apes.

We tried to do the cable car after our cab tour but the line was way to long.

bgula - yes, our £20 tour included everything you list in the £25 tour. The £20 price was last July, so it is possible that it will increase for this summer. For the possible extra £5, it might be worth the security of having it booked.

We were on the Independence of the Seas, which does have rather a large number of passengers and Grand Princess was in port next to us. If Disney Magic is the only ship in port, you should have no problem getting a taxi. Maybe you could check the port website if you google it, to find out. Also, I gather you are there all day, so you also have the option of doing the tour in the afternoon if there are no cabs left. We only had the morning.

Yes, the taxi takes you right up the rock, higher than the buses can go, right to the top. You will get just as good a view as from the cable car and you will get it from various different places. From the cable car, you cannot visit the cave or the tunnels, I don't think. You just go up and down and not around!

Sorry can't help you with the entrance price for the WW2 tunnels.

Hi

We have 'done' Gibralter several times on cruises, never on the Disney ship though!!!

It really is a very small Island and very British - even down to the red phone box and post boxes!!! A little bit of the UK in foreign climes!!

I would certainly recommend doing your own thing. No waiting around for tour groups, you will have plenty of time to get back to the ship, you can actually see it from most parts of the Island!!!

Taxis are ready when you get off the ship, all taxi drivers are 'official' and you won't have any problem with them. They all do the same tours if you wish, or tailor them to what you want to see. The price will be more or less the same.

One time we shared with another couple in a minibus, which the driver filled with a few couples and two of them are still friends to this day, another time we went on our own in a taxi, the guy was great, gave us a good show around, waited while we went into the caves and took us to where the Monkeys were that he knew and would feed regularly.

Last time we did our own thing, walked to the cable car - went up to the top, had a coffee etc., walked part way back down and got the cable car at the second stop down. Then just looked around town.

The great thing is with doing your own thing, if something doesn't appeal when you get there, you can go onto the next, you are not waiting for others to get back to the vehicle or people going to the toilet etc.

Gibralter is probably one of the safest places you will go to, everyone knows everyone else, it is an island, so not much crime, as there is no where to go!!!

Interesting info! I've checked the port website and it looks like there's another ship due that day, but not until the afternoon, so we should have the port to ourselves in the morning.

I've done some further checking and another site indicates that the charge for the WW2 tunnels is 2 pounds per person, but they require a group of 6 - 15 before they will do a tour. Also, it indicates that the tour is 3 hours long. I don't think this would work with the taxi! Has anyone done this tour and can they confirm the price and/or length of it? My father is really looking forward to doing the tunnels, but now I'm not sure if it's going to work out.

Not done the tour, but gone to the tunnels and spent probably an hour or so, if that there. We had a three year old at the time, so standing around waiting for someone to tell us all about it wasn't easy and I just hate the shuffling along, waiting for everyone to get out of the way, not hearing properly what is said, much rather do it myself.

The exhibits are very clear and labled, you can buy a guide yourself. The Taxi driver was happy to wait for us. If you plan it right, you can follow one of the 'official' tours and do a bit of 'earwigging'. We do this all over the world, find a tour group and hang around nearby, hear what we want to hear and move on! ;).
