Past Transatlantic cruisers, what shore excursion did you do, and would you recommend it. If you did a private guide or on your own information greatly appreciated. Thanks A Bunch

Gibraltar...yikes! That brings back flashbacks for me. We did a DCL excursion that included a general tour and a stop at the caves...we went inside and saw the theater etc. That is also areas where the monkeys run around wild. We were warned not to feed them and we all complied, although I saw people who had some with taxi drivers doing it. But leave it to me to get involved in monkey mayhem anyway. Two of them were fighting on top of a van, and one of them suddenly jumped down on me. Then the other jumped on top of him and I had a monkey fight going on on my back. Oh well, it was a great photo op and hubby did snap a few photos since there wasn't much else he could do till the monkeys decided to take their battle elsewhere.

Thanks for the info. Would you recommend the tour you did. Need to post monkey pictures. lol

Yes, I actually would recommend the excursion. It gives you a great overview of the area. We also did a high tea excursion and that one wasn't nearly as good (kinda hard to top the monkeys). DH is out of town but will be back tomorrow so I'll have him dig out the monkey pics. Ironically, I love the Simpsons episode where Homer takes Mr. Burns' yacht into international waters so they do illegal things, once of which is monkey knife fights. I always joke to DH as we pass Jetty Park on the Disney ships, "Are we in monkey knife fight territory yet?" Now I can say that I've witnessed a monkey knife fight, or pretty darned close to it, very up close and personal.

Yes, that sounds familiar. Just watch out for these critters (I found one of the pics. in my photobucket account):

I did the one called Rock Tour as this was the only tour of the island not using the cable car. Also did the Dolphin World tour. Both were fab.

Dolphin World - we saw 3 dolphins (2 common and 1 bottlenose) and were out on a small boat (about 15-20 people) for around an hour in the harbour. Also got some great views of the magic as go out past her.

Rock Tour - you went around all the main areas ie Europa Point (you can see 2 continents from here Africa and Spain), the monkeys, St Michaels Cave (massive cave used as a concert hall) and the runway. It was great fun and Im doing this one this time.

We are booked for the gibraltar walking tour. Did the guides give you a lot more information than if you were to do the same things yourself.

In Gibraltar, it is better not to do the ship's excursions. Buses are not allowed as high up the rock as taxis. As you leave the ship, there will be taxis, which hold 8 people, waiting. The drivers fill the vehicles, you don't have to be a group of eight. They take you on a tour to St Michael's Cave, the siege tunnels, the apes, etc and it costs £20 including admissions. They act as a tour guide telling you all about Gibraltar.

I was actually just about to post a question about this as well. I have also read not to trust the taxi drivers, so I'm unsure of what to do. There are several online sites which encourage you to book a tour with them, but their rates seem very high - 90 pounds for an hour and up. I'd very much like to be able to just get off the ship and find what Marylizcat did. If I can ask a few questions:

1) How long was your tour, and did it cover most or all of the things you can do on the Rock?

2) Did you have to search amongst the taxis to find someone who seemed reliable, or are they all charging approx. the same?

3) The 20 pounds you quoted - was it for your entire group, or per person?

We will be traveling with an infant. Does anyone know if we will require a car seat for said tours? Should we bring one with us as we leave the ship, or would the taxis have this readily available?

I'm also wondering about this. I was planning on just doing a tour through a taxi with my DH and toddler son. Or just taking the cable car up and walking down as it should only take 90ish mins to walk down. Is that not a good idea?

Thanks!

bgula - I can't remember exactly how long the tour was - it seemed to take up the morning. There was no time pressure - we could take as long as we wanted in the cave and the tunnels.
We didn't search for a taxi. They are all the same. It is a standard trip, the same for every taxi. I cannot see why you would not 'trust' the taxi drivers! They are official ones. The £20 was per person. I think £12 is for the tour and £8 for admissions.
I don't know about infant seats, but somehow doubt they would have one. I should bring your own.

Mrshart - the cable car seems to have extremely long queue lines. Also it only takes you to one place, whereas the tours go to several.

If there is more than one ship in port that day, you should try to get off early as there are obviously only a limited number of taxis.

At the end of the tour, he dropped us in the town centre and we had coffee in a cafe and then walked back to the ship through the shopping area. Also had a look in the church on the way. Then had a late lunch on board.

We are also on the Eastbound transatlantic coming up in about three weeks. We noticed your name. We are a Mr. & Mrs. Hart. Our friends sometimes call us 'Hart 2 Hart'. Looking forward to the cruise, especially the ports of Cadiz & Gibraltar. Hope to run into you. Have a great cruise.:)

Oh thanks for this. I may look at the exchange rate and work out if the Rock Tour price through DCL is different or not as the tour seems very similar (excluding the seige tunnels)

We hired a driver on our own right when we walked off ship. It was about $80 for 6 people for quite a few hours. He was wonderful. He was born there and was a wealth of information. We did feed the apes. They did land on our heads/shoulders at some points. It was a ton of fun. DD did not like the apes. She said that this time when we go back she is staying on the ship! :rotfl:

Be super careful of your belongings. The apes will snatch them up. We stoped in a little cafe on top of the rock and bought the girls sodas and chips. Well we got up from the lady for a min to look in the gift shop and one of the apes ran in, jumped on the table and snatched the chips right out of dd's hands. He then sat right outside the door of the cafe and ate them!

Eating our chips...
