Hmmm.......ran out of butter yesterday and saw in their ad that Giant Eagle butter was advertised 2 for $6 starting today. It was loaded on the end cap when I ran in, but a sweet older woman shopper mentioned to me that I should check the actual butter section, Land O Lakes was on sale 2 for $5. I am glad she said it, saved a dollar and got a name brand. Somehow I feel Giant Eagle was being a little sneaky, though, advertising and promoting their own when another brand was cheaper.........Normally I do price compare, I ran in only for the butter and thought I knew what I wanted to get....

I don't see anything sneaky about it, really. It is not the store's job to save you the most money. I was in a store earlier this week, and the store-brand granola bars were on sale 2 boxes for $5, while Quaker were on sale 2 for $4. Store brand was on an end cap AND down the regular aisle. Quaker was just down the aisle. Quaker was advertised in the circular & I have no idea if the store brand was also advertised in the circular. Not sneaky, just business.

Yeah Giant Eagle is like that. They have to pay for those FuelPerks somehow!

We used to pretty much only shop at GE (Marketplace by South Hills Village), but mainly for the fuel perks. We've noticed that while they claim they are lowering prices on "Thousands of items", the stuff we buy seems to be going up. We now find ourselves shopping more often at Shop 'n Save. While I don't like their version of fuel perks, they seem to be having their monster 2-day sales much more frequently.

Also, did anyone happen to notice that last week GE had Klondikes at 4 for $10, but if you used your card you got a 5th one free? If you only wanted 4, you still paid the $10. I see this week they are doing something similar with Breyer's ice cream. Seems to be some kind of new marketing ploy??

Oh, also note that when you go to get the Klondikes, they only had a tag that said 4 for $10. Nothing about the 5th free one. That you had to know from the ad. Probably the same will happen with the ice cream this week.

A friend just mentioned to me about the Klondikes. Maybe it is "just business" but I still think it is sneaky. I live close by, but I would be peeved if I got home and realized I missed out on something "free" like the extra klondikes or ice cream.

I was at my Giant Eagle yesterday and I noticed there was a sign that said that they will not accept more then 3 of the same coupon at one time.

I totally agree.

The store advertises what they have available, what specials they have, and how to get them. If you don't follow the instructions, HOW is it their fault that you missed a deal? Klondikes - 4 for $10 . . . and IF you have a shopper's card, we'll throw in an extra one. HOW is that sneaky?? If you're a member you get, if you're not a member you don't get.

Which GE was this? I hope it wasn't one of mine!!!

It was the one in West Mifflin, near Kennywood.

Whew! Depending on the day I will shop at Century III, SHV or Bethel Park. I do go (on the days I work) to the one in Crafton or Moon to pick up gift cards or dry goods because they offer DOUBLE fuelperks everyday :cool1:

It's definitely a business ploy the way they do it and I don't truly fault them, however I do still consider it sneaky.

The advertisement said 4 Klondikes for $10, plus if you used your Advantage card you got one free. Okay, fair enough. HOWEVER, where the sneaky comes in is that there was not sign/tag to this effect in the store at the Klondikes. It just said 4 for $10. I immediately questioned whether I had read the ad correctly or if it was a misprint. Also, if I hadn't seen the ad, I may have only bought 4 and missed out on the free one.

Nobody is disputing GE's right to do this, just that it is a little sneaky on their part, not putting the full information with the Klondikes.

Well spoken!
And back to the original butter, I went in expecting to buy two for six, got two for five, so I really got a deal! Lucky me! The glass is half full, y'know!

For those buying the butter, Shop 'n Save has their brand of butter on sale this week $1.99 each. A much better deal than GE.

giant eagle sales are a joke anyway. I know the economy is also at fault but we moved here 1 year ago (from eastern PA - Lehigh Valley) and the cost of living here (in terms of groceries, sales tax, and real estate tax) is higher, who would have thought!! But I am the most disappointed in the grocery stores. The sales are basically non-existent, the produce is horrid. I've never bought a 'bad' red onion before moving to pittsburgh (even if I had to spend a little more on one), since we've moved here i've bought a number of red onions that I've cut open and realized they were bad inside. :furious:

I love to cook and pittsburgh is making it really hard on me! I'm looking forward to the summer and the farmers markets again.

But back on topic, am I the only one who doesn't think 2/$6 butter is a sale??

I used to do my grocery shopping almost exclusively at Giant Eagle. Then they remodeled our store (Uniontown, PA). Now I hate it. I don't like the new layout, I have a tough time finding what I want, you have to squeeze through the floral department at the very front of the store to get to the produce and everything else. Instead of having organics in its own section it's right after produce so you have to go through it also even if you're not interested, the deli/bakery section is huge but doesn't really offer any more product than it used to, just takes up more space, they added seating that nobody uses, you have to pass all that to get to what you want, and prices are high. Seems to me that ever since they announced their new strategy of lowering prices on thousands of itmes everyday, or whatever that slogan is, the prices have actually gone up. At least the prices on the things I regularly buy seem to be higher at GE than anywhere else. Now I do most of my shopping at Shop N Save. It's closer to my house so I save on gas, and as long as I stick to sales and specials as best I can I save on my groceries too.

There's also an Aldi's near me. My MIL is constantly telling me I should shop there to save money. I've tried it and I just don't get it. It doesn't seem much cheaper on most things. It's cheaper on a handful of things. But then I can't get all I need there and have to shop at more than one store. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it seems that my overall savings were negligible and I spent twice as much time on my shopping that week. I'm tempted to give them another try just because MIL is adamant about how much money she's saving by shopping there, and I'd love to save money too. Maybe it's because she's content with more generic branded items than I am? Could that be it? I don't mind store brands on some things, but on others we really do prefer specific brands. They don't have much selection of produce either though, and no butcher or deli. I don't know. I wanted to love it. Maybe my expectations were too high, LOL. I just came out thinking, eh.

$3 for butter is not a sale, no way. I never pay more than $2.76 for butter, anything higher than that is highway robbery!

I agree with everything the previous posters have said. What is the deal with Giant Eagle? I never use the restaurant/coffee bar area and the cost of adding those areas into store I'm sure has been passed on to we consumers. I am finding better deals at Shop n Save. I am fortunate to live where I have a Giant Eagle, Aldi's and Shop n Save within spitting distance of one another (Bethel Park), so it's no more gas/time to take advantage of the sales at all stores.

Agree on the produce issue too. I've never found a grocery store that has good produce and I live quite close to Trax Farms, but I don't know that they sell much of the produce they grow. I too can't wait for the farmer's market.

What I am loving are the CVS deals. If you haven't looked at the thread(s) on that subject, do so. You can get alot for your money there.
