Getting rid of burnt popcorn smell?

For the second time in just a few months, my DD13 has managed to set a bag of popcorn on fire in the microwave. We had to toss the 1st microwave and looks like we will have to do the same for this one. The entire house REEKS of smoke. I have had doors open, fans going, windows open and sprayed some smoke-eater spray I got from a firefighter and the place is still very smelly.

Any ideas how to get this smell OUT of my house? And DD13 is banned from cooking anything until further notice.

13 seems to be the magic #. Our friends son set the microwave for 2 hours instead of 2 minutes heating pizza bagels. Thankfully his sister caught it once they were in flames. :scared1:

My son at 13 burnt his share of popcorn too. That small is AWFUL. I sympathize. We also had to get rid of the microwave and time was the only savior.

baking soda! or cook a lemon, seriouslly! If you nuke it for like 30 seconds it tends to cover most smells (dont ask how I know...)

Don't thee microwaves have "popcorn" settings? I think you just have to wait. Sorry.

It's called a popcorn button. My 18 year old microwave has one. My 18 year old microwave has survived my dd16 and ds12 making literally thousands of bags of popcorn over the years.

If my kid wrecked two microwaves, I think they'd be purchasing the next one. They might learn how to use it properly then.

Even with a popcorn button on your microwave you can still burn the popcorn. Most popcorn buttons have different settings availble besides the standard 3.5 oz.

DH and DS9 microwaved 2 bags of popcorn (separately of course). The first one did burn (thankfully no flames) and the second one we watched and still had a few burnt pieces. What we didn't realize until after-the-fact was that both bags were less than 3.5 oz.

My microwave has a popcorn button, but even with that, I have burned popcorn. Once, I was WATCHING the darn thing, and there was still several pops every few seconds. I have taken to setting the microwave for 1/2 the recommended time, then shaking the bag well, then doing the other 1/2.

Burn some coffee beans.

Coffe will help take the smell out. After trying baking soda, without great success I found a website that recommended coffee. I think I took a couple scoops of coffee and put it in a med size bowl with 2+ cups of water then put that bowl in a larger one to catch any bubbling over. Keep an eye on it while it cooks, but you have to get it to boil so the steam goes up into the circulation of the micro.

This worked for me. HTH popcorn::

Next time don't open the microwave inside the house. Take it outside before you try to extract the charcoal.

Thanks. I took the microwave outside but the entire house still reeks even after keeping the doors and windows open with fans going.

DH scrubbed the inside of the microwave but we haven't tried the coffee thing yet. Will try anything at this point!

That is a good suggestion . What if you have an over the range? You cant take that out.

Duck tape it shut and forget it is there?

My work has banned all microwave popcorn because people kept burning them.
