Hi everyone!

My puppy will be getting neutered in about 8 weeks and I'm debating whether I should take a few days off work following his surgery. I know he'll be wearing an e-collar and may need help eating and drinking. Plus he might be on pain killers.

For those of you who got your dog neutered: Did you take off from work? How long is the recovery period for neutered dogs?

Thanks,
Michelle

I don't think you will need to take work off, unless there are complications (rare). Our dog was groggy a bit the first day, but pretty much fine the next. They recover very quickly from this procedure. (ours didn't need an e-collar, he did lick his stiches a little bit, but not excessively and didn't bite at them)

We had our Lab spayed at 16 weeks and the biggest chore was keeping her "quiet"! :p

The vet kept her overnight and by the time we brought her home, she was in good shape. We kept her in her crate a bit more, watched so she didn't chew on her stitches (no daisy collar) and she was right as rain in no time.

Each dog is different, but unless there is som unforseen complication, your's should be fine in a few days.

I wouldn't take off work. We've never had any problems getting our male dogs neutered (2). It's quite simple for them and no pain meds needed. Spaying is a whole 'nother story!

We picked up our Wheaton that evening & he was groggy & not moving real fast :p

He basically laid around that evening & was pretty much back to normal in a day or two.

Off work??? NO! Neutering for a male dog is so much a non-event, they hardly know anything was done. The incision is made in the scrotum and is stitched up with just a couple of sutures. You hardly have to even limit their activity. Female spays are major surgery with abdominal incision etc, so it is a bit more of an "event", but I wouldn't stay home for that either. I have 9 dogs, and believe me, they are NOT babies.

LOL. That's because you are a human male!

I had my puppies spayed and neutered a week apart, both on Fridays, and neither one had any problems. My vet suggested a surgical collar for the male but said we probably wouldn't need it for the female, because they usually only have problems with the males licking themselves. She and I shared a good laugh over that!

We dropped him off in the morning, and literally had him back that evening and he was running around like nothing had happened.

It's not too bad, really. It is a very basic surgery that vets do all the time and male dogs are even easier with the procedure than female dogs.

The most you can expect, barring something totally unforseen and rare, is for your pup to be a little sleepy for a bit.

:D

Now that I can breathe again...

We had two neutered at the same time. No problems from either of them. Though Simon was depressed and wouldn't come out of his crate for a couple of days.
