getting new car. what do you have?

It snows here, and my DH is on his second Prius. He likes them a lot (though this second needed some expensive repairs this year). Once in three years we get stuck in the alley outside of our garage because the city never cleans the alley, and have to dig our vehicles out. But then, we are from Siberia, so we don't get all flustered over a foot of snow.

Neither do we, since I live in Wisconsin.

Love my 2014 Toyota Highlander AWD. Drives great and this will be the first winter with it, but so far it drives better than my Honda Pilot in rain. The new design Highlander has sold so well this year there's almost no 2014's left. My Highlander mileage was rated the same as the Pilot's but Honda is well known for overinflating their estimates which turned out to be true. The Highlander gets at least 17 mpg locally and about 23 highway. I never got over about 15/18 in the Pilot which was several miles under the rating. DH has a Toyota Solara convertible, which he loves. He got the last model year they made them (2008).

I absolutely hated the Prius we were given as a loaner a few years ago. DH and I both said never. It was horrible to drive and see out of and the glare of the dash at night on the windshield was terrible. We found nothing about it that we liked.

I have a Honda CRV and love it!!

Just bought my second Honda CR-V! Gave my old one to my DD who got her license last year. LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!
Both have been extremely reliable and no issues other than maintenance on either (the older one is a 2009 bought new).

I had a Jeep Liberty with heated leather seats and after it was totaled last year, I replaced it with an old Escape with no options. Let me tell you, after a Colorado winter, I missed my heated leather seats and remote start! This winter should be so much nicer than last year. :)

I bought a heated seat cover last year at Menards for $10, works great and doesn't look too bad.

So im still looking. I saw a ford edge sunday at church. I talked to the lady that owns it and looked inside. It looks like it had lots of room inside. I might have to take one fora test drive. I looked online and it has the same options as the subaru it seems. Blindside. Eye ect there just called something different on the ford. Them saw a ford car and started thinking about milage again. Ugg. We get so much snow here in the winter I didnt realize what a headache this was going to be too decide what to get. When I got my van it was easy i wanted a bigger rig and something that was convenient. I love the room but not sure I wanna go all the way down to a car. But the though of better gas milage is so tempting not to mention 10 grand cheaper. Guess I should test drive some of them also and make a chart of them too. Uggg

My folks recently test drove a Ford Escape (I'm assuming it has the same grade quality as the Edge) and while they said it handled nicely and was comfortable to drive, the quality of the materials in the interior was very disappointing. They said they felt like the cloth seats would literally wear thin within a few years if they bought a Ford. Yikes! I think Ford vehicles are overpriced for the actual vehicle, but load them full of gadgets and fancy features (of seemingly lower quality) which drives the price up. I honestly would recommend buying a Subaru, Toyota, or Honda. They are built like tanks and perform well over time. They may not be as visually appealing or have every gadget (or maybe they do!) but the most important thing is buying a reliable vehicle and not buying into all of the "extras" to mask a mediocre vehicle. I'm not trying to say the Ford SUVs are bad vehicles, I just think you're paying more for "features" than "vehicle".

As an owner of a 14 Escape I respectfully disagree. I don't find the materials any lower in quality than any other new car.

I am not sure where you are on this decision, but I have a Rav4, 2010. I have been happy with it. It is a bit loud when on the highway, but I think the newer models are not. I get about 24.5 mpg, which I think is great for an SUV. It handles well in the snow. I live in New England. It has an option to use 4wd, which I really wanted. My only complaint is that it is small for my 6'3" dh, but he is not in it that much anyway. If you are going to be driving long distances a lot, it is not the most comfortable, but if you upgrade from the basic, that is solved. And, again, the newer models are more comfortable from what I have heard. What I really like is that it is an SUV, although a smaller version, which gets decent gas mileage. My dd gets carsick in regular cars on longer drives so I really needed something up higher.
Hope that helps a bit if you are still looking.

I own a 2012 Subaru Outback. We also own a brand new Ford. The subaru has never needed to be fixed...the outback I owned prior to that, a 2010 outback, never needed to be fixed. Ever never. The ford, however, has its own parking spot at the service center.

Our Subaru Outback drove right past all the other slipping and sliding cars during the big ice-out Atlanta had last year. I love the heated seats, can haul a kayak on top, have multiple cup holders up front, talk on blue tooth, fill the back with a huge piece of furniture, drive on snow and ice in a top-rated safety pick car all while getting 30 mpg! And when you buy a new one, every single thing is paid for the first two years. All oil changes. I love that!

I've owned a lot of cars...hondas, toyotas, volvos galore, suburbans, dodge ram trucks, mazda maita, etc etc etc...but nothing has ever compared to my subaru outback!

We own an Outback AND a Forester, and can't agree more! They're the best for our hard climate! :thumbsup2
