Arriving about 3pm to bay lake dec 31. Told we may have difficulty getting into MK for the fireworks due to crowds. Any experience with this?

That is very likely. Depending on what stage of closing the MK is at, you might not be able to get into the MK. When we were at WDW for NYE a few years ago, we went to DHS (we were staying at the Swan for the night). DHS wasn't nearly as crowded.

Would second Deb's thoughts. Go to a different park, plan on arriving back to BLT at least an hour before the fireworks, and watch from TOWL.

Great view, and you won't deal with the mass of humanity on Main Street afterwards. There is no way I would find walking in that crowd "magical" and the experience from TOWL is really nice.

How hard is it to get into TOWL? Figured it would be first come first serve also

We've been to the world 4 times for nye. We have always gotten into our Park of choice by going at Park opening using Disney transportation then never leaving until after midnight. Every time, regardless of the park, it was closed due to capacity. Mk twice, epcot and mgm (then) once. Since we didn't leave we don't know how re-entry worked or the gates opening back up for additional guests. Since you're at blt you can walk over and try. Good luck.

On normal days, TOWL isn't very crowded even during fireworks.

For New Year's Eve, all bets are off. But if you go up an hour early, my guess is you shouldn't have trouble. Good luck!

It will be first come first served but on Dec 30 and 31 TOWL is off limits to anyone not staying at BLT. That will reduce the number of people competing for access. Even with the restriction it will still be a very popular spot on NYE so as others have suggested, getting there an hour early would be a good idea.

Like the OP, I've been to MK on NYE and got in because I went when it opened and didn't leave. The park closed at 10am because it was to capacity and the lines for most rides were about 2 hours long. Needless to say, I never even made it to midnight because I was so tired of standing by 9pm that I left after the parade. However, I was lucky enough to see the HS fireworks from my balcony at OKW, so that made up for it. If I ever did it again, I said I would leave mid-day and come back around dinner time when people were leaving. Maybe someone who may have been successful doing that will post.
Having said all that, you can try but I wouldn't count on getting in to MK. As a resort guest you are guaranteed(not sure if that's the right word) of getting into a park, but it may not be your first choice of park.

Just reached MS after a 45 minute wait (they are swamped because of the 11 month window for Thanksgiving they told me.)

They did say staying at a resort and having DVC and annual pass will give me some priority BUT it will be a guessing game as to where and when we can get in. Thank you to all the posters that gave me their advise. It is appreciated.

And then, Florida at this time of year is way better than looking at rain / snow and generally cold weather of CT. And DS18 is starting to get bored after two weeks at home from his first semester at college. Just slept and ate for the first week and played XBOX the 2nd week. I would not allow him to take it to college, especially since I'm paying for it. :rotfl2:
