Perfect timing on this post!!
I am stuck between 2 options:
Option #1: Buying a 100 point resale with Feb UY and all 2008 points available. (I'd be making my offer by the end of the week, if not by the end of the day!)
Option #2: Buying directly from Disney, 100 points with Dec UY, no usable points until 5/09
Both contracts are at AKV and there is about $100 total difference between the two when closing costs and MF's are factored in.
We are taking a trip on rented points, starting October 25... wondering if I would be in the system by then if I bought the resale.... I would really like the free internet access for members as well as the free valet parking.... Also, I don't think we will be able to use the "extra" 100 points on the resale since our next trip isn't until May 2010. BUT, I already have a friend planning a trip that has offered to pay me $1000 for those points. That makes the resale even more appealing and cost-effective in the long run.
I just REALLY want to start flashing that membership card now and not have to wait until 2010! What are my chances?
Not sure if I can answer all your questions so I'll start with Membership Cards :
~ For resale purchase: you will most likely NOT receive your card(s) before your October 25 trip. Typically resales take 6 to 8 weeks from day you initiate purchase to closing date ( nearer to 8 weeks seems to be majority of resale cases ). Then after closing receiving Membership Cards (they come by mail) takes about 3 weeks from closing date ( our initial purchase was by resale & this is how long it took for ours ), however, you will be put " in the system " as a Member within 5 - 10 days of closing

- that is when you are " official ".
So if you called a resale broker today to say you wanted to buy contract then 6 weeks from today is Sept. 29, 7 weeks is Oct. 6, 8 weeks is Oct. 13 . . . so if luck is on your side and entire process happens in 6 weeks it is possible you may receive cards before Oct. 25, but again, think more like 7 - 8 weeks until you reach closing ( especially if you are arranging financing through a bank, etc. ).
I guess it is possible
DVC could speed up getting your Membership Card to you or issue you a temporary card due to your Oct. 25 trip

- - perhaps others here on these boards have had that experience & can help you out better with that answer. At the very least, I would think if you close on a resale prior to your trip, once you become "official" by being placed " in the system " ( again, usually 5 - 10 days after closing) then the member that you rented your reservation from should be able to call MS to tell them you are DVC Member and have them note on your reservation that you are Members and this would result in your resort cards being printed with DVC MEMBER when you check in. That and your actual Member Account Number should be enough to get you DVC Member Perks during your trip ( free internet, valet parking, dining & other discounts etc.

).
~ If you purchase directly through Disney it is a much quicker process & you'd probably receive you card much sooner. For example, if you are paying by credit card it is virtually immediate as soon as charge is approved & made to your cc that you are " in the system " - - maybe even on that same day or next ( Or if you are paying via check, as quick as DVC receives it & it clears). I have not used Disney's financing ( or any other financing source as we opt to pay cash ) but from what I've heard it is a quicker process than other outside banks and sources although I hear Disney's rates tend to run higher than what you may be able to arrange on your own.
If your purchase is direct through Disney I think ( not 100% but 99.8% sure) there aren't closing costs/fees charged to you. On resale you will pay closing costs/fees so be sure to factor that into what the resale is going to cost you - - when you do that is the resale price still better than Disney price ? Also, are maintenance fees (MF's) fully paid by the current owner on 2008 Use Year for the resale you are considering ? I would want them to be paid; but that is just my opinion. I'm guessing on direct purchase through Disney you will not be paying MF's until May 2009 ? Check that with Disney. Just something I am a little confused about, if your Use Year would be December purchasing directly from Disney are they giving you December 2008 UY points ?

If no, I wouldn't purchase with Disney because that would be a loss of your first UY's worth of point. Did they tell you they are giving you December 2008 UY points but you can't use them until May 2009 ? If so, did they offer you some sort of incentive for that " delay " in usage, like Developer Points ( which are kind of like a one time bonus allotment of points to use during your first year of membership ).
Re-check on these boards and with Disney if there aren't some current incentives you can take advantage of that may make purchasing direct through Disney more attractive.
