Getting from DTD to a grocery store

I just thought of another transportation question. I posted a question earlier but forgot to include this. I am staying at the Pop Century in July and I am getting the frig in the room. It's not really worth the $10 a day for the frig that they give you but I need the frig since we will be eating breakfast and quite a few lunches in the room if I can find a place to get some cold cuts for lunch.

Last year when I went to Florida I was on International Drive and you can get the I-Ride to get you back and forth to some supermarkets. There was only one supermarket that had cold cuts that they sliced, but it was great getting it. We don't like the packaged luncheon meats.

I read a lot about purchasing groceries online at some sites and they deliver to the room, but you have to spend a set amount ($50 minium) and I have the dining plan for the first 6 days so I don't need too much food at first. I need cold cuts, et cetera from day 7 on. I also want to buy a head of lettuce, tomatoes because my nephew is salad crazy. Are there any grocery stores that sell cut luncheon meats, for example ham, that I can get to from the downtown Disney area?

I read a posting about a Winn Dixie and some other supermarkets, but do they have what I am looking for. I forget the name of the grocery store on I-Drive that sold the cut colds cut to order. They only cut ham and cheese, but that is just what I wanted. Can I get to those stores from DTD? How much would a cab cost from DTD to one of those grocery stores?

I also read that there is a Hess mini market. Do they sell bread, milk, mayo, mustard and luncheon meats. I am sure that they are not cut to order, but do they have things along those lines.

I've never been there, but I've read that Gooding's is pretty much across the street from DTD. You can go to www.goodings.com for more info if no one else responds to you. Like I said, I've read numerous people's posts about walking across to Gooding's from DTD. I know they have a service deli because I got a delivery from them.

I thought that I read somewhere that you can walk to a grocery store from DTD but that it IS a walk...anyone know how far and if the store does deliver and how much they charge? Also, if you get there and get your stuff, can you get a taxi to bring you back to the resort? Lots of questions, I know, but this is something I need to know too. Thanks for all the help you can give me and the OP.

Goodings would be quite a walk from DTD although DISers on here have done it. I would guess it's 3/4 to a mile walk from DTD (I'm not always good with distances so hopefully somemone else on here will confirm this). Goodings is also very expensive IMO - we shopped there once not realizing how expensive it was compared to the other groceries stores. There's a WinnDixie just a little further down the road. We haven't been to that one but I'm sure they sell cold cuts.

Gooding's charges a $10 flat fee for delivery, and requires a $50 minimum order. That minimum was no problem for us: bottled water, milk, PB, jelly, bread, deli American cheese, deli turkey breast, fresh bagels, cream cheese, instant oatmeal, fresh fruit, junk food. We never went out for breakfast our entire week, although I did schlepp to the food court a few times for Mickey waffles, only to have the kids yawn and not care. Otherwise, breakfast was a bagel or some instant oatmeal (heat the water in the coffee maker!). We also made PB&J sandwiches and bagels and American cheese sandwiches for the kids every day, to take to the parks "just in case."

Sure, you can take a taxi to and from anywhere, it's just a matter of cost.

We loved the convenience of the Gooding's delivery system. They deliver to Bell Services (BS), and then BS delivers to you. You don't have to wait around for the delivery. BS calls you, and if you're not in, NO PROBLEM, they just store your grocery order for you, even keeping the cold stuff cold (Gooding's separately bags and labels the cold stuff). BS leaves you a message, and when you get in you call them for the delivery when you're good and ready.

It didn't matter to me, but a lot of people have asked about delivery of "adult beverages." Gooding's can't, but www.wegoshop.com and www.gardengrocer.com can. Since Gooding's delivers to BS and not to you, they can't verify that you're of legal drinking age. And by the way, the selection on Gooding's website is rather limited, but don't let that scare you off -- they deliver anything they stock on their shelves (except alcohol), you just have to send an e-mail along with your order.

We have done the walk many a time from DTD. Its a mile, not a bad walk, quite pleasant but coming back with alot of stuff can be a chore. You can do the taxi back to DTD, can't be that much for a mile trip but we unload one of our rolling duffle type bags and take it with us and roll the groceries to the DTD bus stop. We like the walk, do it the first day to break in the old muscles and get all our lunch meats and libations first thing. Its a huge grocery store, pricey, don't really care, its the closest to Disney property and walkable. Just on beer, wine and pop it will save you a bundle over Disneys prices and we like the impromptu lunches at the pool of our own sandwiches and fixins.

I just emailed Gardengrocer.com, and they said that the lowest amount of groceries that they have delivered to WDW was for an order for $35, if that helps. That doesn't include the $10 deliver charge, though.
