Okay, here's my story.
My Dear Sister wanted to spend her 40th birthday at Universal. Since I have been to Universal about a dozen times in the last 5 years, I was more then happy to plan the trip. The original plan was to stay at the Portofino Bay Hotel for 6 nights. I have an AP, and I purchased the 2 day, get three free passes for my sister and brother in law, and since my nephew is only 7, he got a free kids ticket. So, they have passes for 5 days to 2 parks. As part of the trip, my sister wanted to take my nephew to MK for a day. So, even though I have not been to MK in almost 30 years, I start planning that day.
Well, life happens. For good reason, my sister needs to cut the Orlando portion of hre trip down to 4 days. She says no MK. So, I think hmmmm. What should I do? I have spent time planning the MK day, and now I really want to go! So, I decide I will go anyway. Now I start looking at the hotel. Without my sister to share expenses with, spending $520 for 2 nights in the Suite at PBH seems high to me. I call Universal and at that time could not get a hotel on-site for much less then the $520. Hmmmm. Idea! I decide to not only go to the MK, but I will check into Pop early that morning and stay over there. Three day passes, 2 nights at Pop and transportation will cost $410! Sounds like a great idea. I book. Decide on a day at AK and a half day at MGM in addition to my MK day. If I have the energy, I plan to upgrade to a hopper and head over to Epcot to hit the highlights since it will be open until midnight on my AK day (only open until 7).
In the meantime, more family members want to join us for my sister's birthday and in calling Universal, I find out that I can now get two nights for about $410! A suite at the Royal Pacific!
So, now I am getting cold feet about WDW. Maybe it is the venture into the unknown. I don't mind being solo, in fact, that is part of the appeal--getting to explore on my own. Part of it is staying at Pop after the luxury of the PBH. No front of the line access at WDW. Since I will be there second week in July, will I be hot and miserable? Will I really be able to see what I want to see? Even as a solo, I figure the heat and crowds will slow me down. So, having two days to just relax and do what I want as a solo at Universal seem to be drawing me.
On the other hand, I really want to see AK and the thrill rides at MGM. I think at this point my sister is back on for a day at MK, so we will probably still do that. Truth be told, however, I would prefer to do AK to MK. Also, I am returning to Universal for 5 nights in August with my DH and DS. Had planned to do AK with them since our Universal AP's will expire while we are on the August trip. However, I figure one day at AK for three with transportation and all will be close to $400. Further, We will be taking a week trip to WDW in July '07 with friends.
I am not trying to stir up the Universal v WDW debate! I would like some honest input--not bashing!
Thank you!
