Before I moved down here, Aaron and I agreed that if he was still in the area we would start the preparation process for marriage. We are not officially engaged (although he has told me roughly when he plans to do it), but we wanted to get the ball rolling. We met with the priest today at my church and he gave us the information we needed to get started.

I have a question for Catholic brides: since Aaron is Lutheran, I have the option of having the ceremony outside of the Catholic Church. (I'm sure you know where I'm thinking of having it.) In order to do so, we have to have what is known as a dispensation from form. We filled that out today with the priest and he doesn't think it will be a problem. He has been ordained less than a year and has never done a dispensation before, so he wasn't able to tell me much about the process. Has anybody hear been through that and can give me kind of an overview of what that looks like?

Not a current bride, but maybe I can still help. Here is an explanation of dispensation for you..

DISPENSATIONS:

Only the Roman Catholic party signs a request for a dispensation to marry a person from a different faith tradition. The Roman Catholic pastor will mail the request to your local diocese for the dispensation.

A second dispensation request is made if you wish the officiate of the wedding to be a clergy other than a Roman Catholic priest or Deacon. That is a dispensation from Form. i.e. if the Rabbi or Protestant clergy will be officiate at the wedding instead of the priest - the dispensation from Form is granted so the marriage is still recognized as a Roman Catholic Sacrament of marriage; and, the Catholic party is in full communion with their church. If you know the name of the clergy who will officiate your wedding the pastor fills that in as well on the dispensation from Form request.

This link will show you an example of the form:
