Ah! Google.......sometimes I need the simple answers pointed out to me!

It's great to have so many of you joining in the New Year Celebrations. We even had Terra Nova guy as our first foot. Those who already have googled Hogmanay will know what that means. Traditionally Hogmanay (name for New Year's Eve) in Scotland was the main holiday in Scotland. In fact Christmas as a festival was banned in Scotland following the reformation. It was not until 1958 that Christmas day became a public holiday in Scotland. That's a very short simplified history. My grandparents were very into Hogmanay and New Year celebrations. They used to meet up with family in one of their houses. The night would begin with a meal with steak pie being the main course. They would then all take a turn of singing a song or reciting a poem. There were a lot of superstitions and customs. My gran always kept to the house being cleaned for the New Year and of paying back any money owed. Although you don't really hear bells now, midnight is still referred to as 'the bells'. Alan remembers as a child there would be the sound of the shipyard hooters at midnight. Things have definitely changed in recent times and it made me a bit sad to see so many of Hannah's friends posting on Facebook and Instagram pictures of them at 'New Year's Eve'. I definitely felt I had taken on the mantle of the older generation as I ranted "It's Hogmanay". At least my grannie would be proud! In that vein I'll leave you with a verse from a New Year song which to me sums up the Scots' sentimentality.

Steak pie is a favourite of mine all year round. You can get great steak pie at the butchers. The beef is really tender in a lovely gravy with puff pastry on top. We tend to have it on New Year's Day rather than Hogmanay but I think having it before the bells was to soak up the alcohol.

Funny, I did the same thing and saw Rogue One on the afternoon of New year's Eve.

We always do something as a family in the afternoon. It started when the children were younger and they were not staying up for the bells. We have been to the pantomime and cinema. Given we saw The Force Awakens last year it seemed the obvious choice for this year. What did you think? I felt the start was a bit slow but I think overall it was pretty classic star wars.

I've always been a little disappointed that I didn't get to experience a proper Scottish Hogmanay - I was stuck on an oil rig in the North Sea on New Year's during the year I spent in Aberdeen.

Well you will need to come over some year to get the full experience.

Just awesome pictures of you being the Grand Marshall by the way. Incredible luck you had that day and surely an experience to remember.

The photos are really good and plenty more to come. We were definitely in the right place at the right time.

OK but not a patch on chip shop fish and chips with salt and malt vinegar. I think Cooke's of Dublin and the Yorkshire County Fish Shop were better.

It used to be that Dumbo was one of the longest lines in the park.... huh.

I remember it well! Hannah's first Disney trip was with my Mum and Dad to Disneyland Paris. When they got back they said that they had a huge wait for Dumbo and the tea cups because Hannah insisted on waiting for a pink one. I was like "and you let her?"

What?!?!? How can you be too old for the play area?!?!?

Well it's all I can think of but if so it's not very true to Walt's vision of playing together. It's not fair!

And trust me.... you don't want to.

Sorry I'd no idea Hogmanay would be a foreign concept. Hogmanay is the Scot's name for New Year's Eve with all the traditions that go with it. Although you don't really hear bells now, midnight is still referred to as 'the bells'. I tend to watch the Hogmanay TV coverage from Edinburgh where just before midnight they have the lone piper playing on the battlements of Edinburgh castle. Then we all wish each other a Happy New Year!

Holy Splash Mountain line! We've waited in the outside portion of the queue before but not for a longer wait than 30 minutes and that was like, once. But in the summer that line gets crazy! I understand being hot enough to want to ride Splash, but I don't understand why, in that awful summer heat, anyone would wait in an outdoor line that long

You are like me on wait times. Bear in mind that the temperature had already reached a 100 in the morning. No thanks! I would wait till another day to do Splash Mountain.

I think Dumbo is underrated as a ride for older kids/adults. Besides the nostalgic factor it's a cool view up there! I enjoy it and I like Aladdin's carpets for the same reason.

Dumbo is a true classic in every way. We love all those rides!

It was something that I didn't think would ever happen and it is lovely getting to do something like that together as a family. The photos are really good.

I really enjoyed it. I had heard about the slow start, but I didn't think it was too bad, I was kept entertained. The battle on Scarif was fantastic. I was trying to decide if I like it better than The Force Awakens. I don't think so. I guess TFA was just so nostalgic for me, seeing all the original characters back again. But Rogue One really held up the bar. Makes me look forward to the other stand alone films if they are as good.

You definitely needed to keep focussed at the start to follow what was happening. It is one that I am really looking forward to watching again. The battle scenes were incredible. I did have to break to Hannah what actually happened at the end and that it wasn't just a romantic moment on the beach. I was more emotionally engaged with The Force Awakens as I cared more for the characters. I'm still in mourning for Han. I am really looking forward to going next Hogmanay to see Episode VIII.

We did Rogue One on new years eve also, along with some Chinese food and the DD spent a little birthday money. I liked the movie. I think a non star wars fan would "get" it more then Force Awakens, at least my husband did. I did read some spoilers because I had to decide if DD should see it or not but never read about the ending somehow so I was actually surprised once I realized what was happening. I guess I never thought about how they would explain those characters missing in episode IV and it was better then "wipe the droids memory".

I think I will adopt Hogmanay now. It sounds so much more interesting then New years eve. Not that I ever see the bells anymore. ;-)

I am personally very happy you took time off on the TR so I could find it! Being chosen as grand marshals - fantastic and I always wondered how they might get picked. The PhotoPass deal I understand - had trouble last time downloading so just bought the CD - did like that on there were the integrated motion items like Tower of Terror story/drop. You know what was more interesting? All the people on the CD who were not us. Can't wait to see more!

Oops I'm sorry but braes do feature often in traditional Scots song. Braes are hills or a hillside. In fact Peter sang "Ye Banks and Braes of Bonny Doon" in his singing exam last year. It is a lovely song. You may have also have heard Loch Lomond that begins with "By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes". You see it's a bit hilly in Scotland so we sing about it a lot. Now don't ask me what bonnie is?

Well that was very similar to us. We had Chinese takeaway at my Mum and Dad's with one of my brothers joining us. The cinema was really quiet which suited me!

did read some spoilers because I had to decide if DD should see it or not but never read about the ending somehow so I was actually surprised once I realized what was happening.

I managed to avoid spoilers all I knew was it a stand alone and they were searching for the plans of the Death Star. What did your DD think? The ending totally made sense.

I think I will adopt Hogmanay now. It sounds so much more interesting then New years eve. Not that I ever see the bells anymore. ;-)

Feel free to adopt any part of Hogmanay - Auld Lang Syne seems to have been adopted round the world. Just make sure you don't cross hands until the right part! Alan had a nap earlier in the evening and we woke him up for the bells. Rock and roll lifestyle!

Yay I'm pleasing someone! It's great to have you here. You are early on in the trip this is only Day 2 of a 14 night trip.

Being chosen as grand marshals - fantastic and I always wondered how they might get picked.

I think they like to see people who are friendly and are just enjoying being there spending time together as a family! I'm sure that applies to many families so it was amazing getting the pixie dust.

The PhotoPass deal I understand - had trouble last time downloading so just bought the CD - did like that on there were the integrated motion items like Tower of Terror story/drop.

We had so many photos with a 14 night trip especially with all the Grand Marshal ones. I know we bought CDs one year and I can't recall what the problem was this year. I think you still had to do something with the photos prior to ordering the CD. I know we have to pay quite a bit to ship to the UK but if that would have solved the problem I would have gladly done it.

You know what was more interesting? All the people on the CD who were not us. Can't wait to see more!

That is interesting and just think how many CDs you are on. Hang around and I will hopefully get another update posted soon.

You are right...Happy New Year. Hogmanay is just our name for NYE. Hope work goes well tomorrow. I'm back on Thursday. The funny thing is that on the first day back at work all the Happy New Year greetings with hugs and kisses will start again.

I must confess to never having tried a deep fried mars bar. I imagine it would be pretty good. I did once have a similar dessert at a fancy restaurant with small slices of mars bar in batter. It was tasty! Epcot could definitely do more with the UK. Yes you should come back and bring the family.
