Get in Shape & Lose Weight for August 2014 Group

I think the percentage depends on the person. My mom doesn't exercise much but her job has her doing more walking then say a sit down job. She watches what she eats by following the latest Weight Watcher plan. She is at a weight that makes her happy. I have no idea what foods she has been eating to accomplish this though.

For me, I use the 2003 version of Weight Watchers to help me keep track of what I eat. I'm not only watching how much I eat but I'm making sure I'm putting healthier stuff into my body. I think for me that I need more exercise to help me keep the food part in check.

Any doctor will tell you that you need to eat right and exercise. I think the eating right part is more important then the exercise part which is why I think they are giving you the 80% / 20%.

Did that make any sense at all or did I just talk around the question? :)

LOL! Your response didn't ramble around as much as mine did - - - I think the consensus is that dieting has to be more of a focus than the exercise (hence the significantly higher percentage) for weight loss to be achieved. :scratchin

Another thing I thought of is that if you "goof up" the impact potential of diet can be a lot greater than the exercise part. If you skip a day of exercise, your talking a few hundred calories. And if you start up again the next day it's not too bad. A meal out with drink, appetizer, meal and dessert could really be calorie, fat, sugar and/or sodium heavy. And could get up to 1000-2000 calories. ...

I wish I had read this this am- it may have saved what I chose to eat tonight!!! Blahhhhh!!!

I either have the eating in check or the working out......why can't I have BOTH in check?!

Countdown: 13 weeks until August 1st!

“Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand – and melting like a snow flake”

- M.B. Ray

Tomorrow morning I'll be doing a walk with my daughter for Best Buddies. It will be a couple of miles. We went last year and it was so much fun! It's such a nice group. It's also cool because she met her fundraising goal. Her face lit up when she found out..

Gah! Guys, I have hit a slump! Running has become really hard for some reason (my legs just feel so...HEAVY. Like every stride is such an effort). I haven't stopped running yet (and I did have a decent long run yesterday), but I'm afraid I'm going to. And I also just want to eat.all.the.things. Someone talk me off the ledge? I've worked so hard, and I feel like I'm on the edge of blowing it all. :(

It's perfectly normal to go through slumps. Just don't stop, keep going! You got this!!!

How many days a week are you running? I suggest breaking up the run into smaller parts and add some walking.

Three to four days a week. I do walk on my off days.

You might have to back off just a little for a week and then see how that makes you feel. My husband is going through something similar right now and he hates it but he knows it's going to help long term. He says it still sucks.

It so does! But I made myself take it easy today. :/

:( I had some days where all of a sudden I couldn't- just didn't feel strong and couldn't last for a few minutes, nevermind forty! Luckily, it passed.

But the feeling of I don't want to do this I just want to rest and eat a lot is every. Single. Day. Ugh.

Today I *did* eat a lot. :(

I hear your pain! That is perfectly normal. "One foot in front of the other" is how you have to look at it. Also, don't be too hard on yourself if you have days like that - - - "this too shall pass".

It's a journey, remember. (This is something I say to myself pretty frequently lately.)
::yes::

So, I went down only 0.2 pounds this week (down, though, so I'll take it).

I had a really tough time working out this week because of my allergies. I swear it's the worst ever this year! I feel like I have pneumonia because I'm wheezing when I'm breathing really hard (you know, like when you work out!??!).

The day I meant with my trainer, I got really lightheaded and had to stop and sit on the balance ball for a few minutes - - I felt like a loser, but he was very understanding about waiting for me to catch my breath. I'm taking Claritin every day and if it's not better soon, I'm going to call the doctor and ask for a prescription.

Despite feeling like doo-doo, I exercised almost every day last week, including yesterday, when I walked/jogged outside for the first time (i.e., not on the treadmill). THAT WAS HARD! I covered the 3 miles, but I walked more than I wanted to. On the positive side, I've made the transition to running outside and I can work on improving my time from here on in.

Goals for this week: improve my journaling!! I am exercising more than I ever have in my life, but the pounds are not coming off. I have to lower my calorie intake to get past this plateau/slump I'm in.

Good luck everyone!:yay:

That is awesome progress! You are so right about the "journey" piece. I often want it to be - ok do this for a few months and I'll be set. Unfortunately- not how it works!

The transitioning from treadmill to outside is such a killer. I'm fortunate that we have a Rail Trail System here so running on packed dirt is a little easier then asphalt. Did try running on the road last Friday and ended up walking some too. Kept getting a stitch in my side.

You are making improvements which is AWESOME!

Checking in: I did my indoor march video 4 mornings during the week, a 2 mile walk with Best Buddies Saturday morning and cleaned house for hours yesterday. I must have lifted too much yesterday or ( either too much weight or too often. ) I had a pain in my abdomen, but I didn't freak out because it was on the opposite side from where the incisions are. It doesn't hurt as bad this morning, but is still there. Food and diet are still my downfall this week, especially during the time between when I get home around 3 pm and dinner. I have a feeling that will get better once the weather gets better. (If it gets better. Come in already!) I still weigh the same as last week.

Goal this week, keep up with morning exercise. No lifting for another week. Diet-wise, no specific plan with meal plans, etc. just a general shift towards being more aware of what goes in my mouth and that it's healthier than the last few weeks. After going through being in a simple low calorie diet after the surgery, I'm worried to eat too much but also too little. I don't want to go into starvation mode and have my body start slowing down and holding on to everything I eat.

My first time checking in. It's been a hectic few weeks at work and I've been very distracted.

But I did manage to get in 3 5-mile runs this week plus 3 days of weight training. And even better, I lost 2lbs this week!

What's really helped is that DH has finally jumped on the exercise bandwagon. He suggested 2 of the runs (and he HATES running) and that really motivated me. Normally he's the one trying to talk us out of evening work outs and after a long day of work, I rarely have the energy to push for the workout.

I have just over 100 days left until our Disney trip. I just want to be able to enjoy our trip and feel comfortable in whatever I wear. I would love to lose 15lbs by then, but I'd be happy with any consistent weight loss.

Great job to everyone else!

Looks like you guys are doing GREAT! So proud of you all!

Finished a whole week of Focus T25 (DVD based workout) My son is doing it with me and that really helped me stay on track.

Walked 5 + miles on Saturday at a walkathon and 4 + miles on Sunday because we took my mom out to lunch for her birthday... at a buffet... 'nuf said!

Today my daughter and I are starting a vegan challenge for 45 days. I'm not vegan and have no issues with eating meat, but every now and then I like to go back to the basics to allow my body to reset itself. I normally avoid most dairy and wheat anyway so with some planning we should do well.
