Geriatric MM Warriors June 13, 2010

I had an epidural with J-P after 30 hours of labor on my own and it wasn't that bad at all. Went right in. Tom has a very hard back and thick skin. It is unusal and I hope to goodness no more surgery is needed on the left side, etc. in the future. He was funny after they cranked up his drugs. The nurse told me to kiss him goodbye before they wheeled him into the OR and when I did he said No, tongue! He loves to make the nurses laugh.:rotfl:

My friends, please pray for my sister. She drove herself to the ER on the way home from work because she had chest pains. My niece just called me. They've taken blood and given her EKG's. Right now they don't know what caused the pains.
They're keeping her overnight. I'm going down there tomorrow morning. She is the closest person in my life. I'm so scared. When I asked her what room she was in she said Rm. 210. My heart stopped, because that's the exact room my mother was in when we found out she had brain cancer. I don't know if she remembers that it's the same room - she didn't sound like she did. Please pray.

Diane, sending prayers out your way!!! I am also praying that she doesn't remember the room.
I am also still sending prayers about your job interviews, etc.
Please keep up updated on both.
I wish I could split myself up into 3's and be with you, Lisa and Robin!!

Lisa, that is such great news for you guys!! I will continue to keep you all in my prayers.
I had both girls C-section, and with Carrie I had a spinal done. But when they started inserting the needle into my back, I was having a contraction, so I didn't notice the needle pain LOL. I absolutely hate needles of any kind!!

Robin, KEEP OFF THAT LEG!! :goodvibes I hope you get it all figured out soon. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to lay around. Listen to the doctors and get better. Sending prayers out your way.
Thanks for keeping us updated with Carol. That is such good news for her! I wish she'd come back, but I understand why she doesn't too. Please tell her we said hello to her!!

Pam, I once again am completely off program. I was in such pain and under so much stress with Mike looking for work, helping fill out applications and such, I was just eating comfort foods. I need to really get this down once and for all!! I know it works, so what the heck is my problem?

Kate, Maui, hmmmm sounds like she needs company! It is cold here now. We are to get rain/snow mix on Friday! I am NOT ready for this weather. Old man winter can go back to where he came from!!! LOL

On a good note, Mike got a job yesterday, finally!! He is going to work for Halliburton. The main office is about 5 miles down the road. This is where the company originated from. His schedule will be something like 8 days on, 4 days off and be on call 24/7 for those 8 days. His starting wage is $13/hr and at the beginning of the year he will get 2 weeks vacation. He can then buy a 3rd week if he wants. Benefits start from his first day on the job.
He will be driving their large cement trucks. Then as he goes up in the company, he will drive the smaller ones, and then the last position will be driving the company pickups and just checking on the cement trucks. The pay scales go up to $20/hr and then it's salary.
I am so excited for him. This is actually the job he was wanting when he got his CDL. When he went to talk to them yesterday, they told him they had already done all the hiring and the training classes had already started. Then a guy we know that works there happened to come along, he and Mike talked a couple minutes, and the human resources guy asked if they knew each other. They explained they used to work at Lowes together, and the guy we know told the other guy he needed to hire Mike and he is a good, hard worker. He hired him on the spot.
This whole job thing just fell together perfectly, and I am taking it as a sign from God.
Thanks everyone for all the prayers. Once again, God has been good to us all, and I am so thankful to him and you all.
I may not be able to get the diet down, but I am forever grateful for the wonderful new sisters I have found.

Ok, got to get a shower. I have more to tell, but I'll be back later.

:grouphug:

Dinae: Sending prayers for your sister, you and your family. Please come back when you can and let us know how she is doing. :grouphug:

Oh No Diane...adding prayers for your sister and for strength for you to get through this...remember the power of prayer and how much we all love you.

Lisa - Thanks for sharing your experiences with Tom...it all sounds so difficult and gives me even more respect for you both and all you have managed to get through together as a couple and as a family. So many others would have just abandoned ship when things got that tough, but y'all have come through this stronger than ever and are amazing examples of the strength of the human spirit for the rest of us! Praise God for his ongoing presence in all of our lives and for the power of Christ in our hearts! Through faith and prayer we can move mountains, and your family is proof of that every day!

Kathy - that is such wonderful news about Mike and the job...I am so happy for you! I couldnt have said it better either...even though we cant seem to get the MM thing together, the friendship we have found together is worth so much more! I do have to add though...why the heck cant comfort food be low carb and low cal!!:confused3

The weird, but good news for me though is that even though my first two weeks on WW have been sitting in a recliner with my leg on a pillow...TADA! I went to the doc yesterday and have lost just under 5 pounds! OMG...I was cringing when I stepped on that scale....thinking that even with committment to eating the right number of points, etc, without any exercise I would have stayed the same or even gained a little...but NO! I guess the higher fiber carbs I have been eating arent actually working against me so far...go SOUP!

Tom's going home a day early on Thursday. He got one drain out tonight and other will come out tomorrow. He's walking on a walker every hour. He's like Robin losing weight sitting around! What's up with that?? He's lost 9 lbs! Do you think it's because they can't walk to the refrigerator, lol??

Diane: Anxiously awaiting hopeful news on your sister and still praying.

Hi guys!! Another cold morning here in PA.
Not much going on. Just wanted to check in.

Robin, great news on the loss!!! You have me once again rethinking what the heck I'm doing LOL. I may have to research the points program. There is a WW just down the road from where I live. It's about 2 or 3 blocks from here. No excuse and I'd have tons of 3D encouragement also. Hmmmm.

Here is a cute picture of Bailey and Tyson taking it easy this morning. Enjoy LOL.

I have found out why my back/neck have been hurting so badly. It is our mattress!! It is getting pretty old, and I had been sleeping on our comfy couch the last week or so. My back pain is almost completely gone!! So Mike and I went to Boscov's (about an hour drive) on Monday evening and I got a 2" memory foam mattress topper. I am in heaven!! It is sooo comfy! Now I don't want to get out of bed because it's comfy, not because I can't because of the pain LOL.
When he gets to work, we will be getting a new mattress he said. He is also sleeping better.

I just need to ask for one more prayer request this week. Mike has his physical test coming up Friday and he's really nervous about it. It is more or less an endurance test and strength test. He is afraid his back may give out on him during it. He has a chiropractic appointment with me today just as a precaution. Thanks guys.

Ok, off to get dressed for work. I'll try to catch up later. A busy day. Bailey's vet appt at 2:30 (an hour away) a chiropractic appt at 5 and then to work at the office this evening. Mike and I have discussed that when he gets back to work, I will be able to stop cleaning the offices. I am sooo excited to let those go. I just think I am getting stretched a little too thin and need to cut back a little.
Later everyone.

:grouphug:

Lisa - that is such GREAT news! LOL, too funny that Tom has lost weight "doing nothing" too...who would have thunk it! I can make it to the fridge, but dont seem to have the desire to really...one thing WW has showed me is the total importance of portion control...so I find myself making a concious effort to eat LESS of whatever I am eating...duh, not a new concept I guess, but one that seems to have gotten lost for me with all the eating every 2-3 hours, grabbing a handful of nuts here and there, etc etc. And obviously a good part of Carol's success has been calorie counting too. I think it makes sense that the whole calories in/ calories out concept has been around forever, then add to that the importance of making sure that the calories in are of higher quality than we would normally like to be eating! We really can eat the comfort foods on ww, but just less of them!

Kathy - GREAT pictures of the boxers! Make sure Bailey is taking good care of "our" puppies! Kate and I might end up with more new kids than we expected if Bailey gets any bigger! I would think about checking out a WW meeting if I were you...I had NEVER even thought about it before...and while the "leaders" kind of make me gag (way too cheerleader Barbie type for me), they do kind of keep you on track with all the pompoms and GO YOU stuff...I find myself wanting to lose just so "Barbie" wont have to put her hand on my shoulder and give me a "rah-rah " speech! As I said to Lisa, the points system ensures that you take portion control into account, so I am eating less overall, and Im sure it will help once I am able to start walking again. The booklets and stuff show you exactly what and how much you can eat even at fast food restaurants, etc so it sort of gets to be a no-brainer...and amazingly enough, some foods you would THINK would be high in points are NOT and others that you would think would be low in points are NOT...so I have been getting an education as well, and the cost works too, although meetings cost different amounts in different cities for some reason. You can go to WW online and punch in your zip for a nearby meeting and the cost too. There are tons of free recipes available at alot of sites if you google ww recipes with points...and if you want some emergency "go to's" to have around the house, the ww frozen meals are not bad and have the points listed on the box. I was pretty happy with a ww frozen pizza the other day for only 4 points!

Diane - where are you and please tell us you have good news?

Continued prayers for everyone and adding some for Mike to get through his physical exam....:grouphug:

Hi everyone! Thank you all for the prayers!!!!!!!!
My sister is fine. They did blood work checking for enzymes that detect a heart attack and it was clear. They did EKG's every hour and they were fine. So, no heart problem. She was discharged yesterday at 3 pm after the 2nd blood test came back fine. Now she has to go for a stress test. But she also has to work with her doctor to find out what happened. She has a problem (don't know what it's called) that causes her body to fight itself. She gets hives, not the measle looking type - these are one, big raised pink things. She can get them internally. She doesn't think this was the problem because it usually takes a day for them to go away and this went away in a couple of hours. I hope they can find out what caused it. I spent the day with her and got home last night around 11 pm.

No job news yet. I'll let you know as soon as I hear.

I gotta run - I'll check back later. Love you guys!

Kathy - YAY! I'm so glad Mike got the job. That's a great company. I will be praying hard that he passes the physical on Friday.

Lisa - That's so promising that Tom is getting discharged early. It will be nice for you both to get comfortable at home.

Robin- Go WW! Holey moley - 5 lbs. while lounging in your house. Can't beat that!

I can't remember who Carol is. Was she the one who had a husband who was in a band? What does the hcg diet require? Does she take hormones? That's a phenomenal weight loss.

Are you doing the actual points program or is it the new momentum program? I am getting the idea that they combined 2 different programs (the points and the core) and came up with the momentum one. Thanks for the info ;)

Diane: Such a relief to see your sister is fine even though I knew she would be with this group praying for her!

Tom is getting out actually on Friday now, which was the original plan, but he was expected to have to go home with drains. Now one drain is out and the other is coming out on Friday. That's why he's staying the extra day - so the doc can take it out. He's getting up to go to the bathroom and to take a walk around the ward about every 2 hrs. He's been working with a physical therapist every day. They all love him there and can't believe he's 'sick'. He is so strong and healthy compared to all the other patients they see.

My sister arrived this afternoon and we had a wonderful dinner overlooking the bay, with the Golden Gate and Alcatraz in close view. It's great to have her here.

One more full day to get through before we can pack it up and get home to Bonnie.

Have been e-mailing with Carol the past week or so...she and I keep in touch fairly often and she has been filling me in on her latest diet effort....her doctor actually recommended she try the hcg diet...I know I know...its growth hormone, but has been used for years and years, just isnt popular right at the moment. She has lost 50 pounds in 4 months!! OMG, Go Carol! She says she feels great, has had no side effects at all, and tells me that it is hormone and not chemicals, so none are actually expected...and you apparently take a very small dose...it is very calories restricted 600-700 daily and very specific foods, but contrary to any other very low calorie diet, the hormone causes you to burn stored fat instead of muscle. She has done a month at a time, then gone off and not gained back, so she reports that the losses are actually about 1/2-1 pound a day! She sounds so excited and says she feels absolutely terrific!

Hi, Robin.

I am getting caught up after my vacation (more about that later) and have to comment on the HCG. I have been seeing a naturopathic doctor for the past five years - ever since I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (which is an autoimmune disease where antibodies attack my thyroid - makes my thryoid hyperactive). She is very intelligent and traditional in her approach to practicing medicine. She recently added HCG (diet/treatment ?) to her practice. She tried it first (she wasn't significantly over weight). She did her research and decided that it is a good option for some people. She told me she was somewhat reluctant at first to offer it to her patients because she doesn't want to become the local "HCG" doctor. She said that her patients have had good results with it. If you are interested in a telephone appointment with her, I can give you her name and telephone number. She also has a website - you can read about her and her practice.

Kathy -:banana::banana:. That is such great news!

Okay. The good news first. My trip to Maui was amazing. The main reason being that I got to actually see, feel and remember what it is like to be relaxed. I realized that I haven't really taken a relaxing vacation in years. My vacations for the past ten years or so (maybe more) have been with family. My mom will rent a house somewhere and we all congregate. I love family time and I love that we get together. However, as all of you know, families can be stressful. I could fill up several pages of posts with stories of the dysfunction in my family. However, I won't bore you - I will leave that to the new therapist I started seeing last month. :) I have taken a vow that I will take some real "vacation" time at least once a year. More, if possible. And, I am going to make a commitment to working less and taking better care of myself (more self care and less caring for everyone else first).

The bad news. My daughter told me last night that she has Hepatitis C - she was diagnosed yesterday. This is the daughter that had the liver transplant five years ago. The liver transplant was needed because of an autoimmune disease which attacked and literally destroyed her liver. Her most recent boyfriend is a heroin addict and has Hep C. She got it from him. Her liver doctors are at UCSF, which as Lisa can attest, is one of the best hospitals around. She is meeting with a liver doctor next week that specializes in patients with Hep C and she will have a liver biopsy done. She will be on Interferon (sp?) for a year - this is a drug that sometimes "cures" Hep C. There are a lot of side effects from the drug - apparently, some people have a very hard time on it. She is living with us right now and I imagine that she will continue to do so.

I don't think that I have shared with the group that alcoholism runs rampant on both sides of my family (I am sure that this has something to do with the dysfunction.....). I just celebrated 10 years of sobriety while we were in Hawaii. Part of the stress (or maybe all of it) of our family vacations is that most members of my family that shouldn't drink alcohol, do drink. My mother had 26 years of sobriety but started drinking again about five years ago. My sister has had two long periods of sobriety but started drinking two years ago. My dad probably has issues too. His new bride definitely does. Fortunately, Brad doesn't have any issues around alcohol. I am sure that part of the reason that our time in Maui was so relaxing was that I made sure that we were staying in a different town from everyone else! My dad was in Lahaina, we were in Kaanapali, and my sister was in Kapalua.

There is a lot more to all of this and why I am sharing it with you now. But I have to get ready for work. One reason for sharing is because at the age of 52, I am really having to look at myself and how little I know about taking care of myself. I don't know that I mentioned that I have been taking migraine medication since March? I don't sleep well. And, now my daughter, whose health is already compromised, is even more precarious. The other reason for sharing is that all of you are so supportive - it still amazes me that we met on-line, haven't met face-to-face, and we do provide and get so much support from each other.

Wow! A lot has happened in the last week.

Lisa - great news about Tom. You have been in my prayers (as has just about everyone else ). I think it would be shorter to keep a list of those who don't need some extra prayers.

Diane - wonderful news about your sister's heard. I hope the Dr. can get to the "root of this evil." I am still passing you good vibes on the job.

Kathy - YEA for Mike!:cool1::cool1: How amazing God is to put him in the right place at the right time.

Robin - Stay off that leg, but figure out how to move the computer monitor to the coffee table and the keyboard and mouse to your lap so you can chat while keeping your leg propped up.:surfweb: Your leg (and you) are also in my prayers.

Pam - Sorry to hear about your dad. I am praying that one day we will not have to worry about the big C. I know the researchers get closer and closer every day.

Kate - I am so glad you enjoyed your trip. Maui is amazingly relaxing. Too bad you weren't on Oahu to see Jocelyn. What a great job to celebrate that long in your path for sobriety.:woohoo:

I would love 50+ lbs in 4 months, but I can't imagine only eating 700 calories per day. My weight watchers is approximately 1500 per day.

My interview went well Monday, but they called yesterday to tell me that they had given the job to the temp who had been doing it through an agency. So for now, I am subbing at a couple of local school districts (1.5 days this week):teacher:. I actually signed up for unemployment last night. I never thought I would do this. (You are the only people I have told because I know I will never be judged by you all - very much like Kate feels about you all.) It isn't because we need the money right now, but in some ways I feel like I am punishing the law office for what they did (I know how much it will increase their premiums:laughing::cheer2:). I can also tuck this $ away in savings just in case we need the money in the future. I am driving an 8 year old car with 120,+++ miles and my DH is driving a 12 year old car with 150,+++ miles. I am afraid one of these days one of us will need a new car and I would like to have a separate account for that.:car:

I woke up this a.m. to a swollen eye and the eye Dr. says it is an internal sty, so I am off to get hot compresses for it and massage it. I guess if it's not one thing, it's another. :confused3

I hope I didn't miss anyone. Has Natalie been around lately? She posted on my FB account, but I haven't seen her around here.

See you soon!

Can you tell I was in a "smilie" mood this afternoon?

WE'RE HOME!!!!:cool1::cool1::cool1:

All of our prayers were answered! We the preliminary pathology this morning and it looks like no cancer was found on the left side! We'll know more later and have a new plan with the oncologist.

I'll read all the new posts later. Home never looked so good. All the Fall colors have come while we were gone and the view out my own window is a blessed site.

Kate: How awful for Demi to face this health challenge, but good for her for knowing to come home to you and straight to her doctors. I am quite shaken for you, as I know this was a terrible blow. However, we do know a couple of people that have been 'cured' from Hep C. My SIL has had it for many years and she is 63 with no symptoms of ill health at all. She's very active and healthy. I know people who swear by the liver cleanse of one shot glass of organic lemon juice with one drop of peppermint and one drop of lemon essential oils each morning 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. It makes you feel like your digestion is amazing. I like to make mine into a tea with hot water.

Also, Kate, O magazine this month had an article about Vit D deficiency. Migraines is one of the main symptoms. Vit D opens your blood vessels. Constricted vessels is a main cause of migraines. They also said the Federally recommended amount is too low and one should take at least 900 (mgs?) per day. Dad has me on 1200 of calcium with magnesium at night right before bed. The sleeping pills made me too groggy. The CalMag seems to really help. They are both natural sedatives.

I am so proud of you for your 10 years of sobriety. Please don't be so hard on yourself. If you have accomplished this, you have taken great care of yourself!:cheer2::woohoo:

Let us know what we can do to help support you and Demi. You will be in our prayers every day. I think of you and she so much when we walk down the hall on floor 6 of 400 Parnassus.:grouphug:
