Geriatric Millenial

I was listening to a graduation commencement speech the first time I heard us referred to as Gen X and remember thinking, “We are?”

I was born in 1980 and have never felt like I really fit in with Gen X or the Millennials. Then came the term Xennial, the microgeneration born between 1977 and 1983. The generation that had an analog childhood and a digital adulthood. The last generation to remember life before technology took over. AKA, The Oregon Trail Generation. Yep, that’s me.

I’m 1983 and I definitely identify with this. I guess I’m technically classed as a Millennial, but I don’t really feel like I identify with that group.

But, I’m glad I made it to adulthood without dying of dysentery or cholera. If only I could haul more than 200 lbs back when I go hunting... 😉

I’ve told this story here before but I’m going to do it again.

I used to have a shirt that had a picture of a covered wagon and said “You have died of dysentery.” I wore it to Starbucks once and the barista asked “What does that say?” I adjusted my posture and pulled my shirt taut so she could read it. She looked again and then stared at me like she must be illiterate. I said “You have died of dysentary.” She looked confused. I said “You know, from the old Oregon Trail game?” She shook her head.

Not only did she not get the reference, she’d never even heard of the game. Realizing I’d dated myself, I took my latte and left with my head hung, never to wear the shirt again.

Oh man, if I saw that shirt, I’d give you a high 5! Or an elbow bump. 😊

I am a boomer. The group with so much promise and determination to make society good and not trust anyone over 30. We have turned into one of the worst generations ever. Our only redeeming virtue was being part of the Beatles generation. We all went bad big time apparently when we got our first glimpse of a BMW. Then all bets were off.

I’m in a Facebook group about childhood memories of my city.
So many of the older people (probably Boomers) consistently have to belittle young people. Such braggarts how they are the best generation and all the kids are useless.
It’s tiring.

I've never heard the term Xennial but that fits me perfectly! And my younger sister who was born in '81. The only thing that doesn't fit is that even though we grew up in Oregon, we never played Oregon Trail - that's weird, right? lol

Yet we’re seeing similar sentiments right here on this thread from other generations. ;)

That's me too!

I always consider this the age that grew up on the original Star Wars trilogy, and was there to be horrified by the Prequels, then after the last three films you look back and think maybe the Prequels weren't all that bad after all.

A little bit, but if you're younger sister is '81 maybe not so much. I had a childhood friend who's mom worked on that game at MECC, a computer company founded by the Minnesota State Legislature. It slowly made it's way across the country starting in '82. It just might not have made it your part of the country until after you aged out of it.
