Does anyone have any experience with this? I've been interested in taking this up with my kids, and I bought a handheld GPS, but we don't have any experience. Any tips for a geo-noob?:)

I looked into it once.

Geocaching.com is the site you want. They have forums and a Getting Started section there to read for newbies. You'll find a lot more help there I would think.

Good luck.

You got me thinking with this thread...

Apparently, there is a geocache somewhere on the berm behind our house. I have no GPS, but there are only a few places it could be hidden... I might venture over there tonight and see what I can find!

Here's a thread made up of other geocachers:

My family really enjoys it! We don't get out as much as we would like. Geocaching has taken us places that we would never have seen otherwise! DD18 doesn't much care for it, so we tell her that WE are geocaching... she can just come along for the hike. :thumbsup2 ;)

Well your getting a new Iphone soon right? (unless I'm remembering wrong) That has a GPS on it and they even make an app for that! (geocaching)

We love letterboxing and geocaching! We tell our kids that we were selected to go on secret spy training missions, and that the boxes/stamps were put in place by other spy trainees or sometimes (if there is a really cool stamp or prize) the actual spys. (they are still young enough to buy it, and yes we are prepared for all the therapy we will have to pay for in the future!)
It's a great way to get the family outdoors!
My only advise is to not get discouraged if you find boxes are missing, and for this reason we try to stick with ones where there are more close by. That way if one is missing we can quickly move on to the other.
My kids think the best part is being sneaky and not letting the "muggles" know what we are doing, so they have the most fun with the ones in populated areas.
(we have a micro one attached to a metal beam in our local Ikea! That was fun!!!)
We especially love letterboxing because it doesn't require a gps, just gives clues to solve, and that makes it easier for the kids to be involved in the search.

My kids got me a Geomate Jr. for Mother's Day and we have had a lot of fun using it. It's not an expensive or fancy one but works fine for us!

Thanks, all! We are heading to the Smoky Mountains for a week this Saturday, and I see that there are several caches in the area where we stay. I'll give it a shot! :thumbsup2

We enjoy doing it, especially while on vacation. This way we get a chance to see a part of the area we're visiting that you don't usually get to see. for gifts to drop off in the cache we usually have something that represents where we're from.

My DD loves Geocaching!! I have been with her a few times...makes getting outdoors a little more interesting.:)

I just returned from finding a geocache!. There were a lot of bugs and I ran back to the car with my arms flailing!

It's a fun hobby. There are all levels of hides from easy to very difficult.

As posted, geocaching while visiting a new area (or a familiar area that you have not geocached in) adds a new dimension to the experience.
