Geocaching at Disney?

I saw someone mention this in another thread. DH and I have talked about trying this as we just knew there would be caches there, but have never really checked into it.

Anyone have any geocaching experiences while at WDW?

I planned to do this last trip, totally forgot and didn't take my GPS, but before going, I looked up caches on geocaching.com by listing the Disney resorts zip codes. Alot of stuff in the world, next trip I'll definitely look.

Poor DH- he wanted to do this on our trip 2 weeks ago b/c he has been trying it out here at home....he brought his GPS and forgot to print out the info from http://www.geocaching.com/ it would have been fun.

But I dont see how you can just hide things in Disney- doesnt anyone see it and take it- or dont the CM see you "lurking" around looking all confused and get suspicious???

By the way to those of you who do not know what it is-- basically- someone "hides" something to be found and gives coordinates and you have to search for it with your GPS! You can then take what is there and leave your own little momento or sign something or sometimes there are directions on the site on what to do when -and if! you find it!

Here ya go ... geocaching is like treasure hunting with a gps. There's a site geocaching.com on which you can enter a zip code and find coordinates of hiding places of "caches". For example, when we went camping in the NC mountains we entered the zip of our campground and found a geocache with a description and coordinates. We ended up hiking down a trail and finding a beautiful waterfall with a pool at the bottom of it. After lots of looking we ended up having to work our way around the pool into a cave at the bottom of the waterfall. There, on a rock shelf hidden behind some rocks, we found a metal box. In it were a log (in which to record your visit) and some small trinkets. You can take a trinket and leave a trinket. Then when you get back to civilization you can log your visit on geocaching. You can sign up to watch who else finds that cache.

Dh and I have been to Disney 11 times. Its great to add something new to the itinerary! We can do the parks one a day- we usually stay for 7 or 8 days- so its fun to mix it up!

Thanks for the replys. I don't know if we will get around to looking for a cache this trip or not, but I do think it would be fun! We will be at the parks for 7 days and we have two days where we have nothing planned, so we planned to hit resorts, DTD, and whatnot, so it might be something we try then.

Most are just visual caches . We've not done them but have looked them up before.

I think one was a sports object in one of the columes in Italy.How many water jumping ponds and so forth.

DD and I were going to start doing this this year but just got to busy with other travels and never did them.

OH- DD had me doing this a few times in the summer- never found the stinkin' cache! It was an adventure though. I did, however, find a tiny deer tick on me!! god only knows if there are anymore hiding out on me-- Not a good thing around here to get bit by a tick!

I couldn't help but notice that you're a neighbor! Hello there! We're in the Y'town area and also geocache. We didn't look for them when we were in the World back in Feb. I just told dh about them so I don't know if he will want to look for any while we're there. Sad thing is he did bring his GPS with us on the last trip. He even has HDD and Pop Century co-ordinates marked!

Pretty new to the sport, been playing around getting used to the GPS and scouring Geo web sites. Had all the info printed an all but so wound up in the trip, left it all at home, remembered when we got there. Added it to my packing list now so I won't forget it again. There's always a few hours in a trip to go looking around a resort. Found tons of spots just about at every resort. Good luck and enjoy, report when ya return.

A friend of mine got me into geocaching more than a year ago. I considered doing some of the caches at Disney but didn't have time the last trip. We won't have time on our Dec. trip but I'm hoping we'll have time in our schedule during our March trip.

ETA: Thanks for the link to the other thread about geocaching. I've subscribed to that one since it seems to have many pages!

We did some geocaching at WDW a few years back. At that time, there were a few caches scattered around Disney property. However, I believe there are only virtual caches now. They are still worth doing, though! As for printing out the cache info, look into going paperless. You can get a PDA on Ebay for around $20 or so and add the software to make it work for a few dollars more. You can carry the info for tons of caches without any paper at all.
