How is skim, 1% and 2% milk made ~ adding water to whole milk right? Well today I bought a gallon of whole milk *same price as skim, 1 and 2%* and turned one gallon in to 3 - I figure I got two 1% gallons ~ 4 C whole milk + water to fill the gallon to the top and one 2% *the rest of the milk ~ 8 C + water to fill the gallon to the top.

I'm quite pleased with my idea. What do you think?

*ETA ~ see my 2nd *the 3rd* post.

Lower fat content is achieved by removing the fat from the milk. Diluting milk with water not only dilutes the fat, it dilutes the protein, calcium and vitamin D. In other words, your idea is flawed.

Yep ~ I just did some googling and saw that they don't add water they just remove the fat ~ weird - skim milk is basically white water :confused3

Anyways my kids aren't little ~ I would never water it down for a toddler *my kids had straight whole milk from 1-2. We get our nutrients from all sorts of foods - not just milk, I think calcium added OJ is fantastic. Plus I don't think we really need milk ~ we're the only mammals who drink milk past infancy/toddler years ~ that's kinda strange....

Directly out of the cow, raw milk is stored in a large tank. As the milk cools, the cream naturally rises to the top. As the cream (fat) rises to the top, different layers of fat content are created. Skim milk is at the bottom of the tank as the layer of the milk with the least fat. Whipping cream, with the highest fat content is at the top.

The above poster is correct. You diluted the milk and the nutrition.

Here's another idea, just don't drink milk. Neither you nor your kids need it. Humans are the only mammal that actually drinks the milk of another mammal. Cows have 4 stomachs and there's a reason, it takes 4 stomachs to properly digest cows milk. No other mammal continues to drink even it's own milk after infancy. So why do we do it? Because we're brain washed into thinking it's healthy. If you take vitamins, and eat a healthy diet you will get everything you need nutrition wise without it.

My son hasn't had a drop of milk since he was 2 and when we do his annual blood work all comes up perfect.

The only ones benefiting from people drinking milk is the dairy farmers and the people who sell the milk.

If you want to stretch your milk, try powdered milk. It is very cheap and if you mix it half and half with your regular milk, it isn't bad. Make it the night before so that it can totally dissolve and get really cold. My mom always did this when I was little and mixed it right into a regular milk container and we never knew.

Then why bother buying the milk at all? :confused3

I cannot imagine drinking watered-down milk. And forget about cooking with it. When you alter the protein-to-liquid ratio, you end up with all kinds of problems with cooking and baking.

If you really want to save money on milk, invest in some powdered milk, reconstitute it and mix it with the whole milk to stretch it out.

Is it really a big deal if I buy a gallon and turn it in to 2?? We'll still drink both gallons so all nutritional value will be gained :thumbsup2

Why buy it? ~ heck I like a bowl of cold cereal every once in a while and it's a must with pancakes, waffles, cookies ~ but I cannot drink a big glass of it with a meal *dinner type foods ~ a tall glass of cool water please. DH goes through a gallon faster then the kids and I do *I usually buy 1% for us and 2% for him *he's picky* his gallon is gone before ours is! He has a bit of a tummy so he can cut back on dairy fat.

If your family doesn't mind the taste then go for it. :confused3 I know some people do put ice in their milk, so same concept. I just don't think it would taste right to me, but it's certainly not harmful.

The only way that you gain the same nutritional value would be if you drink enough of the diluted stuff to equal the what you would have gotten in the undiluted stuff.

IOW, if there are 8 grams of protein in a cup of real milk and you diluted that milk in half, you would need to drink 2 cups of diluted stuff to get the same nutritional outcome. However, that sort of negates your reason for diluting it out in the first place.

Have you tried your creation? I cant imagine it tasting good...

Well I have added a bit of water to DH's 2% *without him knowing ~ again he drinks a lot and could lose some weight* and he hasn't complained ~ I drank some one morning and it tasted fine to me ~ and I'm picky about milk, refuse to drink it after it's sat out and gotten a little warm *even after it's been chilled again* - that ruins it for me.

I agree ~ but I don't fully depend on milk for nutritional value - again I don't think we really need it, it's just nice to have sometimes.

If your family likes the stuff you created then there's no problem.

But you asked "genius or crazy" and my vote is...crazy. I wouldn't touch that concoction. Especially since you state that you drink milk for the enjoyment of the beverage and not for the nutritional benefits.

OP, if you would like to save money and still drink milk, purchase some skimmed milk powder and make it up full strength, leave the skimmed milk in the fridge over night so that the flavor settles down and the milk is chilled, then add the reconstituted skimmed milk to an equal amount of 2% or whole milk. My DSis and her housemates at university referred to this budget-stretching concoction as "garboons"!

Yep ~ I've read someplace that we actually don't get calcium from it - after our bodies do what they do to it the calcium is gone. Protein ~ we like meat, Vit D - we live in UT *lots of sun ~ however in the winter my kids take a liquid Vit D since the sun only shines when there at school and some days it's too darn cold to go outside for recess :scared1: ~ yet we have 90 degree averages from mid June - mid Sept - YAY for very opposite seasons ~ skiing/snow boarding/tubing/snowmobiles in the winter and boating/water skiing/tubing in the summer.

Seriously? Some people amaze me. You're getting lambasted over milk? :confused3 Dear Lord in heaven. Your kids , do what ya feel! No one will die if you water it down.
:)

When I drink orange juice I fill about ¼ of the glass with water and the rest OJ because the acid gives me horrible heart burn. This method seems to help but I did not realize that diluting it was screwing with the nutrients which is why I drink it in the first place.

Lol, and the people who like it. Folks drink all kinds if things that aren't great for them. Banning it entirely seems a bit extreme, but whatever works for you.

Watering it down is nasty.

The OP specifically came onto the boards asking for opinions on her actions. So, why shouldn't people give their opinions? :confused3 Dear Lord in heaven. If you ask for opinions, you'll get opinions. No one will die if these opinions say that you are crazy.

For what it is worth, I'm with the group that says either use powered milk, don't buy milk, or just use the milk the way it is bought.
