Genie+ at WDW for tickets already purchased?

Anyone know if Disney is going to add Genie+ at no charge to tickets purchased in advance of this rollout? If not, there is a breach of contact with detrimental reliance claim (and possibly class action) for those who already have tickets that are now turned into third class tickets without paying for an upgrade.

Why would it be? Tickets don't guarantee rides

No, they don't. But those who purchased tickets before Genie+ was announced entered into that contact with the understanding that all tickets were equal, and now Disney unilaterally modified their end of the bargain making those ticket's third class tickets for rides unless you paid them $15/day to make the ticket a second class ticket or an additional $ per ride to make the ticket a first class ticket. That fundamentally changes the contract.

I would check the Ts&Cs for wherever you bought your ticket before you take the Mouse to court - the Disney website Ts&Cs certainly mention that "features of [tickets] are subject to change and may be based on features available on date of guest arrival, not those in effect at the time the ticket purchase was made".

I'm definitely unhappy about Genie+ but there won't be any wriggle room in that contract, Disney can change whatever they like & we just have to decide whether to vote with our wallet

At best, if you ask for a refund - they might give it to you (though I'd more likely talk about changes due to Covid than Genie+). There's no way there's a potential lawsuit for Genie+.

And the people who purchased tickets right at the start of the pandemic didn't get Fastpass+ and went in reverse. There's no "bargain" that is guaranteed. No rides are guaranteed. This isn't a new thing.

You need to read your ticket purchase terms and conditions. Disney already reserved the right to do this in the ticket contract. Disney has already been selling expedited access to rides and attractions for years through things like VIP tours and Club 33. They also used to offer extra paid FP+ to club level guests. How is this any different?

I'd like to see a quote from the Disney T&C's about where you see the "all tickets are equal" or some equivalent verbiage. That may help explain your position better.

I am super confused by your premise. How does your ticket, as is, make you a third class citizen?

I could maybe see your argument if Disney started selling tickets that INCLUDED Genie+ without an added cost, though even then you’d have a poor leg to stand on. Disney can run any promotion it wants.

But your ticket allows you the option to buy Genie+, just like anyone else.

No, they won’t. But you don’t have to buy it, they are not denying you access to attractions if you don’t’ buy it, and if the tickets are unused you can transfer them if you don’t want them (if you find someone to buy them from you.) as for your lawsuit, I probably slept through that contract law class, but good luck.

I agree - there have been a very small number of VIP and Club 33 special access and they have always shown deference to club level guests, but this is such a substantial change that will likely be used by a large portion going forward so that you can expect a significantly reduced "third class" experience with a ticket you purchased. That's how it's different. If a VIP tour rode a ride it likely has no appreciable effect on other ticket holder's wait times, whereas the expected wide use of Genie+ will have a dramatic effect that was not contemplated when the tickets were purchased.

To answer the third class question, here is how Disney is now making classes at WDW:
1st Class: $/ride Lightning Lane tickets
2nd Class: $15/day Genie+
3rd Class: Regular ticket

This is more than a "promotion", but a fundamental change in Disney ticket Policy dating back to 1982 when Disney did away with ticket books. That is why the understanding of ticket purchasers up until now was that all tickets are for the most part equal, and Disney should recognize that.

Don't forget about VIP...

Seriously tho, Disney has just adopted the same model as pretty much every mobile game. Microtransactions are where you make your money, G+ and LL are Disney's way of dipping their toes into the waters.

Sorry to vent here, I have always loved Disney, but it seems like the Chapek administration is actively draining Walt's magic pricing out many people. I'm just tired of being nickeled and dimed again...

To use your language, though I don’t particularly care for it, the above is how Disney is making first, second, third class groups of Genie+ users. The ticket you bought entitles you to everything any other guest has. The ticket you hold doesn’t differentiate you, your choice in add ons does.

I wasn’t calling genie+ a promotion. In my post, I was arguing you would have more of a case if you bought a base ticket and then later Disney offered a promotion where, say, everyone who buys a base ticket in the month of October gets genie+ for free. I was saying in that promotion scenario you could argue Disney has made your ticket less valuable then someone else’s.

But even then, Disney does stuff like that already, so even that argument would t go far.

FP has been gone since Disney closed last year and most people bought their tickets after that, so those buying tickets had no expectation of free FP, which is the only argument I can see.

Tickets are still equal, but you can CHOOSE to upgrade it with Genie+, just like you can with PH.

Walt Disney had been dead for nearly 20 years by the time they did away with ticket books. So the ticket books were the “magic”? It’s hard to follow your argument.

Seems all the WHAT WOULD WALT SAY acolytes should love this because it’s as close as they’ve come to mirroring the unimpeachable beauty of the non-egalitarian ticket books. But I guess we are picking and choosing which parts of the legacy we like.

If you call them they will probably refund your tickets and you will be made whole. The same argument could be made before with VIP services, or the ever changing benefits for staying on property. If you read the fine print it says "All features and entitlements of tickets are subject to change without notice".
