General Star Wars Discussion

Yeah I wish this dropped at 7pm CT. We can probably only watch the first 2 and save the 3rd for tomorrow.

Okay, I was only up 30 minutes past my bedtime, but I wasn't going to type out any thoughts. Here's where I stand:

The TIE Avenger is just cool - I hope Cassian keeps it as a personal ride! I didn't so much love the really weird and desperate group of Rebels he got caught in the middle of. Still, it was interesting to see. I didn't catch it, but apparently they were on Yavin. The wedding was some super-interesting world-building, though maybe a tad too much of it. I am pretty sure Cinta is going to be taking that banker guy out! Man, I just loved Cyril and Dedra! I knew what they were preparing for - dinner with MOM! 😮 Man, Dedra ain't having any nonsense in her home either! I really loved that slice-of-life bit.

Now, I was not crazy about "that scene" - you know the one. Apparently that had leaked, but I stay super spoiler-free, so I didn't know. Honestly, it didn't cross the line, but it is right up to the limit of what I'd ever want to see in Star Wars. I think it could have been toned down a tad and still gotten the point across, but that's just me. I know Andor is somewhat serious, but I still generally prefer Star Wars to be on the lighter side. I mean, it's not the crushingly depressing Daredevil - and I'd never want to see Star Wars go that way. I think this is okay, but I hope it doesn't set a precedent.

Other than that, I can't wait for next week! I wonder how I will feel about the time jump - so many things can change in a year. I guess we'll have to see.

The scene didn't bother me because this show is trying to show how drunk with power some in the Empire are. It also mirrors what happens in times of war. Why do we think the Empire that will resort to extermination of people wouldn't have officers that try to take what they want? I think this is the event that gets Bix to take an active role in fighting. I hope she finds the doctor from season 1 and settles the score. The Chandrila world building was phenomenal.

I didn't so much have a problem with the scene itself, just the intensity of it was a bit much. Also, at the end, she yells, "He tried to rape me!" Yeah, that was obvious. Star Wars has alluded so such things before - I mean, Zygerrian Slavers come to mind. Those scantily-clad Twi-leks weren't being sold to clean the house. I think it could have had the same impact if it were toned down a tad - just a tad too. I mean, it was pushing the line, but not crossing it. That's as far as I want it to go though.

Well, she was yelling that to the trooper who had no idea what had happened and was about to take her in regardless of what actually happened because no one has value except Imperials. I don't mind it. Gilroy is really going for it and Disney is not standing in his way. It's okay to have a mature Star Wars that deals with an actual reality of how bad things got under the Empire.

Waiting another week for new episode feels like....

I mean, sure, it's okay to have that, but it's not my preference. I always like to say, "Star Wars is for 8 year olds" - and it is! This is more like for 12 year olds, though I am calibrated to 80's kid levels, which means almost nothing is truly inappropriate! 🤣 I just think there is plenty of more mature sci-fi out there - Star Wars doesn't really need it. Again, it's at the line, but not across it - I just hope they don't try to cross.

I always felt "Star Wars is for kids" was a cop out by George to deflect criticism when the prequels came out. Star Wars and Empire had heavy themes and brutal things happen in them. An entire planet wiped out on a whim, complete with the princess of that planet being forced to watch. The lead's surrogate parents burned alive because they mistakenly bought droids. Jawas massacred for the same thing. A character martyring himself to help the hero live on and unlock his potential. Luke getting his hand cut off and choosing to potentially kill himself than join the side of his father who is a killer. A character being tortured for no other reason than to bring the hero into a trap. It wasn't until Jedi that it really became more of a "kid's film". I think Star Wars is big enough to have multiple appeals. I don't show my 15 year old Andor. She also doesn't have as much interest in it. We watched some Bad Batch last night before I watched the 3rd episode of Andor with my wife and 17 year old.

All that to say, I get that the scene was tough for some people. I think Gilroy is trying to show how dirty it became and why people resort to rebellion and extreme means (like the kid creating the IED) when faced with oppression. It's definitely hitting at a pretty opportune time. Star Wars has always been rooted in history with the Empire.

Sure, it has all that stuff, and that stuff can be for kids - well, 70's and 80's kids anyway. 🤣 If you go back to the old serials that Star Wars is heavily inspired by, people die and such, and those were ostensibly for kids. It's not really about violence, but more about tone. The Tone of Star Wars is somewhat cartoony - a bit elevated, but not that much. Star Wars is for kids - or the kid in all of us.

Andor is not kiddie Star Wars, there is plenty of content for all... the Young Jedi... Skeleton Crew... let us have some dark adult Andor

I thought the assault scene was intense but it did not go to far. you cannot be ok with person after person getting shot, from the very first episode we have watched people over and over getting killed. We have watched scores of people at this point get killed in various ways... murdered shot in the face........ blown up.... that is ok, but at gunpoint Bix said he tried to rape me... and THAT is too much?

Rape is a reality of war, I thought it was well done and I was glad she beat the heck out of him. Poor Brasso :(
on a different note....

the fancy TIE stealing reminded me of Ezra doing something very similar

This is going to be a intense season. Loved it.
