General question about Project Runway (possible spolier)

This was the first season of Project Runway that my Ds and I have watched. Irina's winning collection last night looked like someone who was playing "high fashion" - If I was trying to do a mockery or take-off of a high fashion line, I would have desinged Irina's line - not a single garment that a normal human being would wear, all silly and S&M looking and black. Now mind you, it looked a lot like the ridicuous clothes you see pictues of from the European runway shows.

My question: Is that the type of collection that usually wins Project Runway? If someone shows a collection of lovely dresses that women would actually buy, is that the kiss of death?

Pretty much. The judges (and audience, buyers, etc) are looking for edgy, different, new point of view, etc with the collections at Fashion Week. The designers have all season to impress the judges with outfits that "any woman would want to wear.". In years past, winners have been even more over the top than Irina was last night. (Christian Sirriana, omg.) I thought Irina was far and away better than the other two finalists. While Althea's dresses were pretty, I thought they were kind of boring, although certainly more "wearable" than Irina's. Carol Hannah's were okay, but very disjointed, like the judges said. There needs to be something tying them all together.

This season was horrible. They fought over a network switch for PR prior to this taping. They moved from Bravo to Lifetime and also moved the show to CA.

If you know Christian Sirano, he was a past winner and is now designing his own lines. Plus he is funny with his made up language.;)

This season was a HOT MESS.:lmao:

While Irina was no Christian (yes, I loved him), I thought her line at Fashion Show Week was amazing. Except for the first outfit that came down the runway, I would have worn any of those pieces (and I loved loved loved the hats).

can you put spoiler in the title? I haven't watched the last show; and bc it said general question, I thought I was safe - nope, not so much! not mad, just want to save someone else! :thumbsup2

I have not watched it either and I skipped over the joyjoy's post.;)

Whoops! I'm sorry, too, you guys. It never occurred to me that I'd be ruining it for some of you.

In the words of Tim Gunn..... "Carry on!".

I'm sorry, too.

We are a spoiler-loving family. During the last Olympics, when the gymnasts were allegeldy competing "live," I watched with the laptop on my lap...kept refreshing the scores so we would know the score before NBC showed us the "live" performance. It's a lot more relaxing that way!

I actually really liked this season and I thought the top three, as a whole, were more interesting and talented then in the past. I did like Christian as well, but didn't think the other lines that season were that good.

I've never been near fashion week in NY but I guess I just assumed that the Project Runway contestants were doing what is normal and expected???

Gosh, I think alot of "high class fashion is unwearable junk. Viktor & Rolph sent some models down the runway in just poufy balls of tulle, and some where there were huge holes through 20 layers of tulle to the models knickers. I think this article from ABC says it best

I remember watching part of a Gareth Pugh show who pretty much sent a girl down the runway in plastic tablecloths, with a lawn chair as a hat. I can't iagine anyone insisting that they're making clothes with that nonsense, but he's a darling of the critics :confused3

Wow! I think that dress is cool!

I think the idea is to get people with money's attention and then they commission them to design clothes for them.

OK I found the collection and watched it. It was long with 24 pieces. Really cool to see a professional runway show. Yes there were "showpieces" that are not really meant to be worn. There were some things in the collection that appeared wearable.

The website is a little tricky but really cool. You can skip and go to fashion in a couple of clicks. Click on the runway to see the show.

I was so disappointed in the outcome..I LOVED Carol Hannah. She was so nice, her designs were beautiful...especially that long tea/aqua number..I want that one!! Irina was such a B*&^% - UGH!

I guess that dress with the unattached skirt and full view of her underwear and tights would catch some attention.

I just don't see this as catching anyone's attention in a positive way:

and this one is good too with the hedgehog back:

Its like they're missing the point entirely, and you don't see one of the classic fashion houses sending such junk down the runway. Valentino might have sent something unwearable down the aisle, but it would be beautiful and sculptural, flattering and feminine. The yellow hedgehog dress is none of those things.

I half agree, I didn't like the hats, but would have worn everthing else except the first outfit as well :)

She may have been a you know what but I thought her designs were flawless and beautiful each week. I was also so touched by how her dad reacted since she had said he really didn't support her career choice.
