GENERAL CAR RENTAL QUESTION

It's probably cheaper for the husband to get a hotel for the night just outside the airport. One way rentals are always more expensive than renting and returning to the same location.
Impossible due to the Taylor Swift concert!! We tried!!

Thank you all for the insight, information and suggestions. All greatly appreciated. She actually got on the phone and called each rental agency and got the same results. Hotels were impossible to get due to TS concert so just as we were about to throw in the towel fate stepped in.

Last evening United cancelled her flight! She got on the phone right away and they rebooked her and our granddaughter on a new flight Sunday instead of Saturday and booked her through to Aspen with a plane change in Denver for no charge. Originally this option was $700 pp. So it worked out for the better in the end. They are also leaving from Newark now instead of LaGuardia which makes it much easier for us to get them to the airport tomorrow. Plus, we have an extra day with them!! Win/win!

Thanks again for all your help everyone!

I did a dummy request for the one-way, airport to airport, for 24 hours. It came in at around $325, but that's because the reservations system automatically increased the number of days to the minimum for one-way rentals. There was a disclaimer that if the car was returned before it was due, you might only be charged for the period you used it, based on the agreed-upon rate, but that was not guaranteed.

Got a notice last night that her new flight which was supposed to take off this morning was cancelled. On the phone for over 2 hours and finally got another flight Monday morning but back out of LaGuardia. Travel by air is crazy lately!!!

There is not much spare capacity right now. Crew shortages, weather, FAA limitations and some labor battles have not made things easy. This is why I'm buying an annual travel insurance policy so that I'm covered if something like this happens. I almost got stuck at O'Hare a couple weeks ago and it was going to be be two days before I could get a 150 miles flight to my final destination if mine didn't take off.

That's when I would definitely rent a car and drive those 150 miles!

I rent cars all the time but I am stumped. My daughter is in town and flying back to Colorado tomorrow. Her husband was going to drive from their hometown to Denver to pick her up (3.5 hours away) but would have to drive later today and get a hotel since her flight gets in very early and they need to get back home tomorrow evening. So, she was going to just rent car and drive home and return it to their home town which should turn out to be less expensive.

Every single car rental place says they have no rentals available tomorrow for a one way. If I book a Denver airport to Denver airport 24 hour rental they have many options available. What happens if you book a Denver to Denver rental but drop it off elsewhere (Aspen). I know they charge a drop off fee but I am wondering if there are any other fees involved. I have been to Denver several times and I know they have tons of car rental places with tons of cars and can't believe there isn't any available for one way rentals. So frustrating!! Any advice?
Rent a small U haul truck.
