Gearing up for Christmas already.......

If she is 12, she is old enough to understand a budget. Have a frank talk with her and let her know that if she honestly and truly wants that iPod Tough, it will be the only thing she gets.
DS has Asperger's and understands a budget and could at that age.

.

I agree. My DD12 is asking for an iPod Touch for Christmas as well. She is more than old enough to understand about prices and budgets!

I've told DD12 that if she saves half the cost of the iPod Touch - I'll give her the other half of the money as our Christmas gift to her. We will probably buy it for her outright, but in the meantime, she'll learn the lesson that (a) money doesn't grow on trees and (b) sacrifices must be made to get what you want in I'm life! She's working 2 hours a week with a friend and I am hoping that my you-save-I-match proposal will encourage NOT to fritter away all her money on junk food and junk jewelry!

I would try and get her the I-touch also. I got them for my kids last year (they were 10 and 8 at the time). I got them the 32gb ones. They love these - I think my DD has 13 pages full of apps (most of them free).

If you don't want to by a refurbished one then I would wait until all the sales start. Many places last year were offering Gift Cards when you purchased them. Since they can't lower the prices - this is their way of getting you to buy at their store. I know Target, Best Buy and Toys R Us all did this.

That's what we did last year. Bought one at Target and got a $25 (may have been more, can't remember) gift card:thumbsup2

What are apps? Is it music or download, If soWhere do we find the free stuff?

The 'apps' are things like games, calendar utitilites, lists, maps, etc. that you download from itunes in the 'app store'. Many are free, lots are very inexpensive like 99cents or $1.99

The Apps are for the Touch, they won't work on the nano if thats what you were going to get for your dd.

If the IPOD Touch is the gift of choice - then I vote for that. Since you have started early - perhaps this is the year you could start a new tradition. At our house - my children love to open their stockings because I fill them with all kinds of neat wrapped items - that don't cost a lot of money. Many of the items are very practical, and then the surprises. My children always open their stocking last and get lots of laughs.

My dd has a 2nd generation 8gb touch. Is there anyway to trade it in for a new model or would I have to sell it on Craigslist?

Also, another dd is a runner and I was wondering if the touch would be okay for her to run with or should I get her the new nano? Although I think she'd like to be able to watch movies on it. Decisions!

The iPod Touch is really pretty big for running, IMHO. Some people do like to use them with an armband, though.

As for trade-ins, Apple doesn't offer that, but I think BestBuy was offering iPhone trade-ins when the iPhone 4 came out, so who knows?

My son also has an ipod touch and it has the ap for Pandora radio. That allows you to opick an artist or song and it will play songs and artists similar to that or from that artist. So as long as she is range of wifi she can listen to music that way too.

If you want a case, Target has them on clearance now for 75% off - so they under $10. They were lucky brand and really cute. They also have them at TJ Maxx and Marshalls for cheap money.

I have over 100 Apps on my touch and I've not paid for any of them. Some are only demo versions but others are full versions. So I'd skip the $50 GC unless you can get a deal on one (CVS often has them at holiday times with $10 in ECB back so you could use the $10 in ECB toward another gift like makeup or nail polish or a DVD. :thumbsup2).

IPod Touch Update:

I had a talk with my daughter the other day and asked her if she really wants an iPod Touch for Christmas. She said she does. I told her that if that's what she wants, there aren't going to be a ton of other gifts or clothes or anything like that. She's fine with it because she said that's all she really wants.

Soooo.... I decided to get her the new iPod Touch (the one with FaceTime) and I went to the Apple store to check it out (keep in mind, I've never touched an iPod of any kind before). They have demo models of all their merchandise out and I played around with it for a good 20 minutes. Well, now I want one!!! LOL!!!!! :rotfl2:

I guess mine will come at a later date.

I figured since I made the decision to get her the iPod, I may as well buy the case now and maybe a dock for it. Well, Apple hasn't even come out with the cases for the new iPods yet!! They're a bit thinner than the other iPods so the other cases won't fit the new one. How can they come out with an item and not even have a case for it??? :confused3

Anyway, here's what she'll be getting:

iPod
Case
(possibly) Dock
$25 iTunes card

3 hair extensions (she wanted these for her b'day and I totally forgot :guilty: )

Chocolate coins & Hershey Kisses (I always get these for her @ Christmas)

Socks/Undies/Bras (a Christmas standby)

Some hair things (cream, clips, brushes, etc)

Some things from Bath & Body Works

I may buy one of those felt "Santa Bags" with her name on it and put everything in there (wrapped up, of course).

I think this is more than enough.

Now, I have to work on getting one for myself!!!!! :rotfl:

Do those cases fit the new iPod Touch? The new one is a different size and thickness than the previous version.

I don't need to get a sparkly or glittery case for her --- just one that will protect the unit if she drops it :scared1:

Speaking of which, can you get any kind of insurance on these things in case they get dropped or if the screen cracks?

I'd recommend looking at squaretrade.com for warranties/insurance type of stuff. I've used them for warranty, but luckily haven't had to make a claim (although I know people who have, and it's turn out to be great). They run sales and have codes often, for example, i know they had a 30-40% off code over labor day.

ETA: it looks like code FALL is good for 30 percent off right now

If I get the iPod, I doubt if there is much else I can get her. She's 12 and I don't want Christmas to be just one gift (kids, even at her age, don't think cost-wise: as in "well, this cost "x", so that's why I only have 1 thing).

Sure they can. My daughter is 11 and is well aware that things cost money. If DD really has her heart set on that, and it is in your budget, then get it. Just let her know ahead of time that if she really wants it, that's all she is getting. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the info! I will absolutely be getting some kind of insurance or warranty on this overpriced (but fun!) gadget!

Ahh I see that they don't have it out yet. Go figure , but It did take a few weeks for the new Otter to come out for the i phone 4. THey will have it out soon. : ) I highly recommend the otter brand.

Toys R Us has the new Ipod touches in the ad for tomorrow (8gb and 32gb). If you buy one, you get a $25 gift certificate to Toys R Us. I didn't see any other good deals in tomorrow's paper (Best Buy had a bundle, but it didn't look like anything exciting).

I think I explained myself wrong... of course, she understands things cost money and how hard I work to get that money. The thing I was concerned about was having 1 gift versus maybe 15 gifts under the tree.

Problem solved, though. I've already spoken to her and this is what she wants. I've posted an "update" above. :)
