Gearing up for Christmas already.......

my dd asked for a nano. She wants it for music, and making videos and maybe to watch movies. Whats the difference between nano 5th generation and ipod touch .Is it just one has a bigger screen and you touch it to work?

The new touch has an HD camera, it has internet capability so you can download apps, and yes it does have a much bigger touch screen.
There is also something called face-time that I'm not familiar with.

Here's my two cents. My daughter wanted a Ipod Touch, we decided against it, because she doesn't need internet access. Something to think about. Instead she bought an Ipod Classic. We made her buy it with her own money. She is a very responsible kid, but I find if she has to buy something like that with her money she takes better care of it. Now she wants a new Nano, because it can get the radio. Maybe you could give her half the money towards what she wants and let her save up giftcards (from B-day and Christmas) or money from little jobs around the house or babysitting. Just a thought.

how about going a different way... A Microsoft Zune ??

16 GB at Walmart for $160 for the new Zune HD -

It has wireless, web browser, touchscreen and much more.

I refuse to buy and Ipod for my DD13. I don't want to have to convert all of the music on my computer to AAC from MP3 and want her to be able to grab songs from anyones computer and not worry.

we dont want her to have internet access on it so the nano is perfect.

My daughter had like $75-$80 saved up for one but there werent any good deals so i figured I'd just get it for her B-day or x-mas. The nano is the only thing she asked for her b-day or x-mas . The 2nd thing she asked for was squinkies but has said it's ok if we dont get those cause she can use a giftcard she still has money on from her last b-day. She's good with saving her money and buying stuff she really want vs impulse shopping.

We've cut back on x-mas gifts and decided to buy fewer gifts instead of a bunch of junk.

ipod for her B-day

X-mas big gift is her radio speaker for her ipod

As recommended buying refurbished from the manufacture with warranty is they way to go. Great way to save some cash.

Other Gifts, you could hand her down some antique jewelry.

Get her the Touch! If she "really" wants one, she'll be so excited that she won't care that there is not a pile of gifts.

My plan was to pay all cash but I'm going to payoff 3 creditcards nextweek. Then I'll have one with a $166 balance.
Once those are paid it leaves me with 2 cc left
1. is 0% until 3/13
2. 0% until 5/11
and I only need to make a monthly payment on both

so here's my new plan

DD's birthday is also in Dec so I will use my BestBuy card to buy an Ipod nano for her B-day, Radio/speaker thinghy for her ipod for X-mas and some $10-$20 itune cards for her x-mas gift and stocking stuffer.
Since BB has special financing offers I will get it all for 18 months 0% just a monthly payment.

Payments will be low so i can use the cash from my Nov paycheck and $165 from x-mas acct. for a few other gifts for dd and I wont have to charge up my cards and get charged finances.

The accounts with 0% i divide the number of months and payments so those are paid by Final payment date. I figure this will work and I will also be able to put money away in savings.

some will say i shouldnt but if I want to payoff these 3 creditcards I need to follow my new plan.

Next year I will have my wk deduct $50 a month and have that put in X-mas saving acct.

The Ipod nano is different from the Ipod touch. Will she like the nano (since she is asking for the touch??) I would check on it with her first.

The OP is the one who's daughter wants the Ipod touch. I know, I was confused too.

Instead of buying the Itunes card to go with it - she could ask Grandma/Grandpa Aunts Uncles etc that she is interested in an Itunes card (or you could) and use the extra $50 to get the makeup, jewelry, etc that was already suggested.

Warranty is a year on the apple site, just as the new products are. All refurbs I have bought have been in excellent condition. You can get a bigger memory for a much better price.

DS8 is gettting a touch for xmas, but I think I am getting the new one that just came out. I just got a I phone 4 and he and I can use Facetime if I get the new one . :rotfl::rotfl:

I know it is silly though and really just should go with the refurb. 8 year old does not need all the new bells and whistles.

Why don't you get her a refurb one off of the apple store. It'll save you some $$ and then you can get her some smaller gifts. I also wouldn't do a 50.00 itunes gift card. Also the refurbs that come from the apple store don't look used. I've ordered plenty and they'e all looked brand new. Also the warranty is good for one year!

Hth's
Another vote for a refurbished ipod. I've bought two (or is it three?) over the years, and I never found a scratch on a single one. I just checked, and a refurbished 8G ipod touch is going for $149. She will never even know that it was a refurb.

check out overstock.com for cases and accessories...great, great prices.

Also, a 32gb 3rd gen may be a better value than a 8gb current version -- 8gb will be used quick, especially if she adds a lot of shows/movies.....it will end up costing more $$ to upgrade in 6 mos or so!

The refurbs from Apple are not packaged the same as a new ipod. THey come in white boxes, and the box does say refurbished on it. I just got my dses nanos and they won't care if they are refurbished, I bet if all the OP's dd wants is that Touch she wouldn't care either, but if she does the OP can just take it out of the box and put it in a case and wrap it up.

OP just for reference my dd has an 8G, she has 8 pages of Apps, 2 movies and a little music (she still uses her nano for music) and still has room on it.

I typically get her a bunch of gifts for Christmas and one "big" gift. If I buy her the iPod, this is going to use up my entire Christmas budget for her if I get the iPod touch and a $50 iTunes card (except for the Radio City Rockettes tix).

$50 is a LOT, in my opinion, for an iTunes card. There are so many free apps out there. If you're worried about the number of gifts, I'd get her a lower denomination card and use the difference to buy a small gift or two.

I would try and get her the I-touch also. I got them for my kids last year (they were 10 and 8 at the time). I got them the 32gb ones. They love these - I think my DD has 13 pages full of apps (most of them free).

If you don't want to by a refurbished one then I would wait until all the sales start. Many places last year were offering Gift Cards when you purchased them. Since they can't lower the prices - this is their way of getting you to buy at their store. I know Target, Best Buy and Toys R Us all did this.

I agree with some of the other Dissers. If that is really what she wants maybe it will be okay. My mom had this dilemma with my sister last year and it ended up working out. Someone mentioned before that if she already has music on cd's than she probably wouldn't need to much on her itunes gift card. I got an ipod last Christmas with a $15 gift card and still have money on it, since I already had some music. For Christmas my sister got her ipod in a big box, (which ended up being fun) and a couple of little things. If you do decide to look on craigslist for an Ipod, def make sure it works completely before handing over the cash. My roommate bought one from someone and didn't even check to make sure it works:scared1:, afterwards she couldn't get in touch with seller and had to pay extra to get it fixed. Hope that helps a little and I am sure she will appreciate what she gets for Christmas. :santa:
