I just discovered that my family will be at WDW during the "Gay Days" week.
Has anyone been there during this week during past years ? Should I be prepared to see fully perverse, leather spiked couples as well as "under the radar" couples ? There is a concern for my kids here ! I realize that this is a free country but isn't WDW expected to be THE most family-friendly place on earth ? Thanks to all that respond....

I love the annual arrival of this thread. It's like the swallows coming home to Capistrano...sort of.

The short answer (and perhaps one of the more friendly) is that the pressence of same-sex couples who are intimately involved with each other will be obvious. Look at it as an opportunity to have important discussions with children. I think WDW is the most family-friendly place on earth, and won't it be grand to have the kids understanding of family broadened.

From what I have heard from others, Gay Days is not a terribly big deal. No, they are not going to dress in bondage attire. Yes. they might be holding hands. But you're kids will be fine. They will encounter difference eventually in life, no need to shield them from the fact that their are indeed gay people in the world. I bet you, your children won't even notice because gay people look just like everyone else.

Nice topic for only a 2 post count.

Well, that depends...how much bondage gear do you see us straight folk wearing at the park? (You know that straight people can be into bondage, too, right?)

No need to fear for your children - the gays won't bite! ;)

And it is.. THE most family-friendly place on earth!

Just because the family doesn't look like yours doesn't mean they aren't welcome. Isn't that nice?

There are always gay couples at WDW. There just happens to be more of them during the Days. My children have never asked about seeing two men or two women together because it is not a big deal to us. I have gotten more upset at seeing a hetero couple making out in line on front of the kids than men holding hands! If you are not staying at the 'official' hotel or going to pleasure island, you may not even notice. Gay familes are just like yours, they just want to go and have a great vacation.;)

Nah,
Personally I was a chaperone for my nephew's senior class trip to WDW and I saw way more inappropriate behaviour from the teens. :scared1: What is it with teens, night time and a pool jeez. :headache:

We've been 2x's during this week and had nothing but fabulous trips. Go and have a ball.

I just wanted to add my $.02 --- I was in Disney about 9yrs ago in June when it was Gay Days--- I had a FAB! time----everyone was so kind and fun loving ----It was before I had children.... the only hesitation I would have now about booking during that time is the potential for some serious heat----It was so hot it was being reported that animals were dying in AK.....
We were staying at Coronado Springs and the resort sent out a newsletter that it was Gay Days (I don't think it was worded like that) and the park was going to open extra-extra early in anticipation of the added crowds & to get people in & out before the hottest part of the day.
----on a side note about discussions to have with your kids---tolerence & equality definitely will come up but, there were protesters as well & you will have to answer why they are there too.......frankly I find kids ask "why do they care so much who other people love?"

Yes you should be concerned for your children if this is not a joke.......

Nice comback!!
My girls are 11 years old and I sincerley doubt that they would bat an eye at any gay couple holding hands or sweetly kissing (I am offended seeing any couple, straight or same sex having a makeout session in public). Now if they butted ahead of them to get to Splash Mountain my kids would take you out at the knees!!!! Kidding of course!

This is a good time to remind everyone to be polite and respectful to ALL posters even those with whom you might disagree.

SINCE THIS IS A HOT TOPIC - THERE WILL ZERO TOLERANCE FOR RUDE, SARCASTIC OR POSTS ATTACKING OTHER POSTERS.

The answer here is more obvious that you might think at first glance..

There are guests in same sex relationships at Disney 365 days a year. A slighty higher percentage of CM's are homosexual than the general population.

If you're at Disney - you're there with gay people no matter when you go.

That said, if you end up there during the week of gay days, yes, you will be there with even more than any other time of year.

If you have any concerns about your trip during this time =-> you should probably reschedule because, as with anything in life, if you go looking for problems - you'll find them.

If you decide to travel anyway.. just avoid the designated park each day and you'll avoid the bulk of the crowds.. (which is always a good idea any time there is a large group visiting Disney).

Those days are:

Thursday, June 5th - Ak
Friday, June 6th - Disney Hollywood Studios
Saturday, June 7th - Magic Kingdom
Sunday, June 8th - Epcot

If you did nothing else but avoid the Magic Kingdom on Saturday, you'll probably not really even notice the event is going on - again - unless you go looking for stuff.

Ah summer is approaching! The annual Gay Day post.
I can't promise but I am pretty sure your children won't become gay just by seeing gays. And who says Gays can't be a family? We have met the nicest families during this time. Tolerant, kind, friendly and funny.

You can go to the Gay Days site and see where they are staying and which parks they are planning to go to on which days. That way you can try to avoid the biggest crowds and longest lines. Long lines are no fun no matter WHO is standing in front of you or WHAT they are doing. JMHO:thumbsup2

You are joking, right? Are you just trying to stir the pot on here?

I sometimes wish that intolerance was painful.

If that is the worst thing you have to worry about your kids ever seeing or experiencing, your kids are leading a pretty charmed life.

You can go on one of the many gaydays.com websites to find the "official" schedule -- it will tell you which parks the Gay Days organizers are stressing on which days. Then, simply avoid the featured park. (This is a crowd-fighting strategy, not necessarily an "avoiding gays" strategy, as many of the Gay Days folks do this too, to try and steer clear of crowds.)

I will say that yes ... you might see some outrageous costuming. I will always remember the day I saw the 6-foot man in 6" heels and a red vinyl one-piece catsuit go through the turnstiles. (He was in First Aid about two hours later, being peeled out of his vinyl suit and given fluids for dehydration -- why he chose vinyl in Florida in June, I'll never know.) There are also drag queens dressed as princesses (but never inside the park, as Disney will not let adults in costume enter the park, no matter what day it is -- those folks are asked to change and not admitted until they are "de-costumed"). But folks like this are the rare exception, not the rule.

As one poster upthread mentioned, you're more likely to see heterosexual couples making out in lines and on attractions than you are to see overt gay PDA. Of course, as is true for any large group -- from cheerleaders to gospel choirs to family reunions -- having a large number of folks on a ride or attraction with you might cause some annoyance (chanting, singing along with attraction music, photo-taking, etc.). So again ... try to avoid the featured park.

The thing to remember is that there are gay people, gay couples and gay families at WDW every single day of the year. There are a large number of gay Cast Members, and this includes managers and VPs and even characters. If you're not worried about your kids on any other WDW visit, then you don't need to be concerned for them during Gay Days.

I think that if your children understand that love is a wonderful thing, than they should be ok no matter who they see kissing.

If they can watch Tinkerbell in a dress that nearly shows her...pixie....then they can handle a guy with a spiked collar, or a woman who doesnt shave her armpits.
