GAY DAYS- Should I be concerned for my kids ?

I haven't read any other posts but I'll say I'd rather go during gay days as opposed to pop warner or grad nites. Off to read all the bashing now.

Don't worry, we went last year during this and it was no big deal. My kids didn't think anything, and we all realized they are here for the same thing we are.

I went last year during this time and I enjoyed it a lot. We are both here for a good vacation. Some good friends of mine actually prefer to go down here at this time because the crowds are not that bad. They say that the heat and the gays scare the crowds off. :lmao: I had a great time and actually we talked to many of the couples there learning about the tradition. I have not seen any rude couples or overly perverse couples either. I agree with the people who say that teenagers are worst. Just make sure you don't lead your kids into pleasure island or anything and i really doubt that you will.

Just have a good time, and don't let something small like that ruin your magical vacation. :)

During our 10 days in Disney World in November, my girlfriend and I witnessed:
Several people (mostly young women) in very revealing clothing
Several people (again mostly young women) wearing shirts with lewd phrases on them
A drunk accosting us for our Extra Magic Hours bracelets
Dozens of rude people shoving their way onto buses and monorails
A wave of people taking advantage of those stepping aside to allow a wheelchair into the Kilimanjaro Safari in order to advance their own position in line
Lots and lots of swearing with children within earshot, including some sexual remarks
Etc.
I would hope that any parent would be prepared to contextualize these things for their children. So too should they be prepared to let their children know that the lewd behavior of some gay people is not reflective of the majority of homosexuals (we saw gay people during our trip and none were behaving inappropriately, which is pretty much the standard for what we see in our neighborhood here in Albany) as a preface to a discussion about the subject in general. Parenting is a difficult job and I honestly don't envy those engaged in it, but please don't be frightened to put yourself in a position where it might be harder than usual. Chances are that something difficult to speak to your children about will happen during any trip to Disney, and you'll kick yourself forever if you let it detract from your experience, and certainly if you let your fear of exposing your children to the world keep you from going to begin with.
In short, have fun! I'm jealous you'll be visiting well before my next trip!

This was so well spoken...kudo's to you!!!!

Is anyone else amused by how many people are calling same sex couples "the gays"? :rotfl: Maybe I'm weird, but it just strikes me as funny. 'Course, I guess there are a lot of worst things they could be called.

I guess I just see them as "people" kwim?

Seriously,

It kind of makes me wonder about those referring to people in same-sex relationships as "Gays", in their sincerity of acceptance. It's not like those who are homosexual are a different kind of people :rotfl2:

Anyway, I feel like I am from an part of the US that is more towards a who gives a bleep who you love as long as you love... children in my family as well as many other families I know just learn to love and accept everyone for who they are and some people are in love members of the opposite sex and others are in love with members of the same sex. Who cares right?

Well in regards to the original question, if you kids haven't already been exposed to such life styles, let them know that there's nothing wrong with it and Bob and Rick's relationship is the same as Mom and Dad's relationship, built upon love.

Hear, hear.

The use of "them," "they," "alternative lifestyle," etc. was bothering me. This board should be inclusive for everyone that loves the Mouse, just like WDW is.

I am so encouraged at all of the wonderful replies to the OP.

Gay Days are awesome, except, as one or two other have pointed out, HOT and HUMID. Bleah.

You see no more same-sex couples engaged in PDA than you do opposite-sex couples engaged in PDA on a regular day at WDW. And frankly, I'd rather see two dudes making out than some hot, frazzled, frustrated parent screaming at and threatening a hysterical child in the Happiest Place on Earth.

I'm curious, though .... why would you "be concerned" for your children?

Thanks, supportive posters! Yet another reason - like I needed one! - to adore Disney and Disney addicts!

I was at WDW during Gay Days in 2003, and didn't find out I was there during Gay Days until after I got home. That's how fine it is. ;)

The most rambunctious behavior we witnessed was at the Country Bear Jamboree. FYI, "Bears" are a self-identified subset of the gay community, typically known for being hairy (body and/or face) and fat/large (like the animal). Basically, they have the stereotypical physical male attributes of working-class masculinity. Lots of guys were wearing red shirts bearing (no pun intended) images of and phrases regarding bears. In the queue and during the show of Country Bear Jamboree, they were constantly joking, laughing, and making crude remarks and innuendo. I admit, we laughed along with them, because so much of the dialog and script for the show sounds like it was written for this crowd! Lyrics like "down on all fours", "blood on the saddle", and "he turns me on"...how could this crowd NOT have fun with the material?!?!

.

That is hilarious and makes me actually WANT to go to the Country Bear Jamboree!!!

We're done here. Page 7 tho.. that's a new record for length! :)

Asked and answered - stick a fork in it.
