My notoriously hard-to-buy-for MIL got an early Christmas gift from DH and I today, and she is beyond THRILLED. Yay! She has been asking for a dog. She is retired and (if you recall) lives at home taking care of her 87 year old father 24/7. She's been super stressed caring for him over the last 2 years (he had a stroke and is paralyzed on his right side and cannot speak). She wanted a warm snuggle buddy to cuddle with and to keep her company...and maybe to take on walks so she can get out of the house once ina while!

Anyhoo...so I jumped on petfinder last week and found her a freakin' adorable blue tick coonhound (just like our blue tick whom she adores). He's about 1 1/2 years old. They found him in a dump, skinny and lost. He's been in a foster home through a local rescue for a few months. MIL filled out the application and was approved and we picked him up today.

He's so cute and she is over the moon for him. Now she is asking for some name suggestions. Being a "fine southern dog", she thinks she'd like to give him a "southern" name. We've suggested:

Blue
Bueford
Rusty
Boon
Walt or Roy (as in Disney. My blue tick is Lilly, after Walt's wife).
Winston (as in Salem...we're in NC)
Clint
Gordon (as in Jeff)
Duke
Ernie (short for Earnhardt)

She's open to suggestion! The "southern" thing is just us goofing around. All names considered, and I will try to get a pic of the handsome dude when I can...Oooh, there's another one! DUDE!

Boudreau

I hope the dog works out for her. I know when my elderly mother adopted a Border Collie pup we were all shaking our heads. Really, you had to get a Border Collie?:confused3 But that dog has been life-giving for her, a real reason to get up in the mornings. And she's not too active, at least, for a Border Collie. She has been a very good companion for my mom. I hope your mom's new dog will be a lovely addition to her life.

I named a co-worker's blue tick hound.

Southern + (he ain't nuthin' but a) hounddog + blue (suede shoes) =

ELVIS!

Hers was a pup, so he was doin' a lot of singing at night, too. ;)

I prefer to name the dog after their personality. But that takes a while...

Q was already named from Adopt-a-pet. he full name is QUianna.

Fred was originaly named Huggy Bear. and it was quite fitting now that we know he likes to cuddle. But we were not going to have a pet named after a drug dealer from a 70's TV show, heheheheheee

we were thinking of names and he was walking around the living room. I called him Fred and his head spun right around! He was found wandering as a pup, so maybe that actually was his name.... Hehehehee We kept it.

did you happen to give her vet gift certificates as well? it's a great gift but a gift that comes with costs.

and my parents had an Ernie.....for Earnhardt. so I'd go with that.

NO. My MIL is very capable of providing for veterinary expenses. She has an appointment with her vet to have the dog microchipped this week, and has ordered a supply of heartworm chews and K-9 Advantix.

This wasn't a suprrise gift or one that was chosen lightly. She's wanted one for a while now and we thought it would be nice if DH and I covered the adoption costs as a gift.

I like Elvis too.

we also had a beauregard. he was my DH's beloved basset hound. his name suited him to a T. we called him beau for short.

Awww...the new doggie sounds wonderful. Good luck to him and your MIL. :)

I like all the names you listed, so I'm no help. Our Max is named Max because we got him for Christmas, and my son (who was 6 at the time) said we should name him after the Grinch's dog. It's a perfect name for him. He is totally a maxi-dog.

What a perfect name!!

Bedford

My In-Laws had a black lab with that name (After Nathan Bedford Forrest) and my DD loved that dog. When she was 2 she was given a small stuffed black lab puppy that she still carries aaround with her 6 years later!

I also like Buddy - after Buddy the Elf from the Elf movie!

One of DS' friends got a dog this past summer and they did name him Dude! It is such a great name. It's not common around here and I just think it's hysterical every time I hear it -- in a good way. :lmao:

I'm bad with names, we usually come up with off the wall ones but we have only had to name cats.

Good Luck! I'm voting for Dude though because I like it.

How about Hank or Chance.

or Lucky (since your Mil and he are lucky they found wach other.):goodvibes

These are great! I'm making a list to bring to her house tonight. Keep 'em coming!

I LOVE Beau/Beauregard! That would be my vote.
We have a basset, except she's a southern LADY, so she's Daisy Lou!

I was going to suggest Beauregard as well. I love that for a "southern gentleman"!
