We are heading out mid September and will be staying near the airport the night before (thumbs up to Twilight Check-IN !).

We did it last year, but didnt choose so wisely. The hotel was OK, but the transportation to and from the airport was rubbish. I can not remember for the life of me what the hotel was called, but was about 20 mins away from the airport and the bus went to just about every other airport in Sussex before dropping us off !

So, what are your recommendations?

Hi

Depends on a few things.. mainly how much do you want to spend. For "ultimate convenience" the Sofitel and Hilton are great, but you pay for that convenience... There are plenty of other hotels that are within a 10 minute shuttle/bus transfer of the terminals.

We have always stayed at one of the two hotels actually connected to Gatwick by a walkway. We usually do the Hilton, but are trying Sofitel this year, as it was owned by someone else the last time we stayed there.

We book a package that includes our car parking. This year we got a deal through holidayextras.co.uk for 1 nights stay and 15 days parking at Sofitel for £187.75. This includes them parking our car when we check in at the hotel, and them meeting us at the terminal when we get back. (This is for October 11.)

I say always, but about 5 years ago we stayed at Europa Gatwick Hotel and the place was awful!!! Unless it's been sold and completely renovated I wouldn't recommend that to anyone.

We used to stay in the Renaissance a few years ago and thought that was very goo, but have heard that it has gone downhill in no uncertain terms. Stayed in the Moat House (next to the Renaissance) once and REALLY didn't like that (rooms small and not brill, whole hotel a bit scruffy, on-site parking a nightmare and the buses to the terminal stopped at the Renaissance first - the first one filled up and didn't stop at the Moat House, so we had to wait another 30 minutes for the next bus!). So the Moat House is off the list forever...

I really like the Sofitel (used to be the Le Meridien) and have stayed there four or five times. Haven't stayed at the Hilton - husband has, but he wasn't as impressed as he was with the Sofitel...

If you are not opposed to a B&B we stayed at Trumbles Guesthouse last year. It is about 10 mins from the airport (great view of the runway from the breakfast room) and the owner does the transfers himself. He was reliable and the guesthouse was lovely. Highly recommended.

Sofitel for sure. Nice hotel, newly finished rooms, very convenient.

ask for 5th floor or above and overlooking the runway.

I prefer the Sofitel too, but we always stay at the Hilton as we have a Hilton timeshare in New York and can use our points to pay for the stay.

Nice clean rooms and extremely convenient for Virgin flights - you are just a 5 minute walk from the check-in desks. If you choose the Hilton, sign up for HHonors before you go (if you aren't a member already) to maximise your chance of a free upgrade. :)

We stay at the Hilton just a walk through to the airport in the morning....:cool1:

Another thumbs up for Trumbles. Approx £70 for a family room and this includes a full english breakfast. Parking is £3 per night. The rooms are very clean, modern and spacious. The owner takes you to the airport and picks you up again when you come home.

We used to stay at the Le Meridian (now Sofitel) but that has got far too expensive. The rooms there were ok but bland, and no breakfast included.

Hi, We parked the car at the airport and got a Hilton overnight deal from NCP for a really good price. We then walked from the hotel into the check in. Well worth it!

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Sofitel looks very expensive, but Hilton doesn't seem to be a huge amount more than staying away from the airport. I think we will seriously think about the Hilton !

Rascal,
go to the Sofitel web site, the price for hotel and car parking is cheaper than going through on of the hotel & car parking web sites.

Rascal, what night do you want to stay and when would you be collecting your car again? Sofitel is usually £20/£30 cheaper than the Hilton...

Alice

Thanks Guys - you are right, Sofitel IS cheaper. I must have just been browsing the wrong site....Sofitel it is then !

When are you going, how long do you need parking for and what price have you found so far - incase I can work it out any cheaper...

We will be staying overnight on the 16th September, will be away for 10 nights.
I think the website price was about £150.
We have a 12 month old baby too, will be taking a travel cot for him which we can hopefully just set up in the room.

Many thanks.
Russ.

PS - Any idea how I can change my Username ?

That is an exceptional rate - I am seeing £189 through the Sofitel's own website (15 days parking) or £186 through holidayextras.co.uk (15 days meet & greet parking) for your dates :thumbsup2
