(Edited: We just got back. If you want an update go over to page 6.)

We are taking a very budgeted vacation to Gatlinburg at the end of June. We used a timeshare exchange and airline credits to start with. We'll need to rent a van and will search for a good deal.

There are 7 of us. We plan to go to Dollywood. Looks like this will eat up most of our entertainment budget. We need tickets for 2 adults and 3 kids (2 are young enough to be free.) Any discount tickets available? I don't see multiday or multipark tickets listed on the website except season passes. I think we'd like to go two days and perhaps to the waterpark too. Is the waterpark worth going to?

Other things I think we'd like to do are the Arts and Crafts loop, spending time in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, maybe mini golf. We've been to the aquarium before and will skip it this time. What else should we do?

Any restaurant recommendations? I think we'll eat breakfast out at least once and dinner out most of the time. I could eat at the Old Mill every night! I loved it!

Thanks for the help!

If you go later in the day to Dollywood, the same ticket gets you in free the next day. You get a day and a half off the same ticket. They usually have fireworks every night.

Last summer, we purchased 3 day Dollywood/water park tickets for $89 per person. You could visit either park on the same day, or in any combination that you wanted. It was an option on the Dollywodd website last year.

We only stayed 3 nights last year, and just visiting Dollywood/water park, it took up most of our time. We did play mini-golf a couple of times and visited the outlets.

We stayed at the Christmas hotel and it was a real treat - I would highly recommend a stay there.

If you haven't spent some time touring the National Park offerings like Roaring Fork and Cade's Cove, I would save money by doing that. Picnics in the park at the Chimney Picnic area are a blast. We stop by KFC and pick up a bucket of chicken and head up the mountain. Also the tram up the mountain from Ober Gatlinburg is breathtaking. When I went the ticket was good for two days. If your group can handle heights, it is one of the most beautiful views in the world. Once up on the mountain, there are things you can do up there on a item by item basis.

I really really enjoyed the Hatfields and McCoys dinner show. I wasn't sure that I would, but it was awesome. I have also did the Dixie Stampede and it is good too.

Dollywood is a lot of fun. I dream about the fried chicken at Miss Lillian's Chicken House inside Dollywood. The food there is amazing. The buffet there is all you can eat and cheaper than some of the other places. There are ways to get discounted tickets, so keep your eye out for discounts in coupon books and brochures. I think the free second day deal if you come in late can also be used at the water park.

Could this have been a length of stay pass purchased in a package with your hotel? If so, this wouldn't be available to OP since she is staying in a timeshare.

We've had Dollywood season passes off and on for about 16 years. Last year was the first time we've had Super passes for both parks and it was our first time visiting Splash Country. So, I'll try to impart all of my so-called wisdom to you in one post!!!! :)

It looks like the Great American Summer program is going on again this summer with fireworks and extended hours (it used to be Kids Fest in the summer). Don't miss the bubble show if they have it again this year. Even my dad liked it! A season super pass is pretty much your only option if you plan to visit both parks on multiple days. They have pre-season pricing and payment plans on their website now. One of the members of your party could get a gold super pass. It gives you free parking and 20% off of merchandise and food. If your kids want to play a game, you can get a free game with purchase of a book of Dolly dollars if you ask the person running the game.

We usually buy 1 refillable mug and take others from years past. We buy the 99 cent drinks in the refillable mug and then pour them into the other mugs for the kids. At Splash Country, we could use our Dollywood mug to get 99cent refills but Splash Country sells a more expensive refillable mug that gives FREE refills and you MAY be able to use that at Dollywood to get free refills there, too. I also suggest a refillable popcorn container if your kids like popcorn. It's worth it after just one refill.

A great place for the fireworks is up at the playground with a rubber mulch floor in Timber Canyon. Your kids can run around or whatever and you could sit on a bench and enjoy the fireworks. We've done this a few times and only a few other people were there. Last year, DD was thrilled to fulfill her goal of riding the Wild Eagle during the fireworks.

It sounds like you'll have a stroller but in case you need a locker at Dollywood, there are some at the river raft ride and some in Timber Canyon (some other places, too). They cost 50 cents and you get a key. If you want to go back and switch things out, you'll have to pay another 50 cents to lock it back and get your key again. You can't take stuff on rides here like you can in WDW- even the flying elephants! Also, parts of the park are steep and there is one hill that is sort of textured and hard to push a stroller on.

It used to be that Dollywood pretty much cleared out before closing and you could ride something like the raft ride over and over again. With the extended (til 10pm) Summer hours that has changed. The lines can get really long at Dollywood but the Q2Q would be pretty expensive for a party your size.

I had never been to to a full fledged water park and we really enjoyed Splash Country. If you want to ride River Rush (the water coaster), I would suggest that you get in line first thing. Get in line before it gets hot!!!!! We were in line for almost 3 hours in the afternoon!!!! But the kids begged and we gave in. It was fun but not worth 3 hours wait. Don' think you can go just before closing and get in line. They didn't cut the line off but if we were still in line at closing, they told us the park would close and we wouldn't be able to ride.

There are sort of play areas for different aged kids. It appeared that some people set up a base camp at those areas- or the wave pool- and some stayed there all day. With young kids that might be your best bet- stake out a spot near the area you think you'll be most of the day. There is a little playground for really small kids and a shallow swimming area for bigger kids in another part of the park where people seemed to stay alot- plus a larger kids area that is like a McDonald's playland with water. It was hard to keep up with where the kids were at that playground and I just had to plant myself near the entrance while we let them play there.

Renting their cabanas is really expensive. We usually put a towel or two on a couple of chairs near the lazy river in a plastic bag (in case of rain) and stowed the rest of our stuff (refillable mugs, etc) in a locker. You get a discount with a gold pass on the locker rental.

We left our vehicle and rode a tram to Dollywood to see the fireworks in the evening. When we left, the tram driver would not take us to our vehicle- even though where we parked said "Tram Stop H." He offered to take us back to the park where we might be able to take another tram but we didn't want to wait anymore. Those crowds are awful at closing. We walked (mostly in the dark) and had to stop crazy-park-leaving traffic to cross the road. So, just drive over to Dollywood if you choose to do this!!!!

Close your mouth if you ride the train, you could get ashes or soot or whatever in your mouth! You will get soaked on the River Battle and some grown men had no mercy on me or my DS who was 4 and just soaked us thoroughly. I had so much water in my face and he was so slippery I couldn't stop him from climbing over the top to his Dad on the other side of the ride!!!! :scared1:

Your kids will want to get wet at the "farm" area near the barnstormer. Take extra clothes. I've seen little girls in bikinis but I think it's against the dress code. DD wore her bathing suit with a skirt and a tshirt over it. She took off her tshirt before she got in the water. DS usually wears swimming trunks and a tshirt. DH & I also wear quick dry clothes.

I don't have a food suggestion other than check Groupon to see if they have any deals. Have a great time!

Thanks everyone!

I'm thinking we'll take advantage of going after 3 and getting the next day free at both parks. That would save us $100 over getting season passes.
I wonder if we'll spend more than the $100 savings doing other things though? :lmao:

How much is parking? I may still have hubby get a gold pass for the free parking and 20% off as any food we eat in the park adds up too!

I'm planning our itinerary now. I do plan a day to just drive around and see the mountains. I guess it's Roaring Fork we did before. Last time we were there we also did a super long drive through steep mountains roads and saw old log cabins and such. I don't think we'll do that this time.
I'll come back to share my itinerary when I'm done and see what other ideas you have for me!
Thanks again!

Cades Cove in the national park is BEAUTIFUL!!! There are lots of walking trails, old buildings to explore, waterfalls, etc. Take a picnic lunch.

If you're into shopping, I ALWAYS love the outlets in Pigeon Forge/Sevierville (it's right next to Pigeon Forge).

Eat at the Apple Barn in Sevierville -- great home-style food (the apple fritters are to DIE for). There are several shops there, including a candy store...somewhat like a Cracker Barrel on steroids (but MUCH better in my opinion).

Right now Groupon has had several ads for mini golf/go cart options. You have to search for Knoxville as the city.

I can't say enough about enjoying the walking trails and nature options that the area has to offer. Also, use the trolley if you can. Get the day pass and you can hop on/hop off as much as you want to. That way you are not moving your vehicle all the time. We usually park at the visitor center in between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and trolley wherever we want to go.

A great restaurant in Pigeon Forge is Captain Jim's Seafood. They have an excellent buffet and if you go before 4:00, you can pay lunch prices instead of dinner.

Have a great time!
:thumbsup2

Oooh! The Apple Barn Village looks cool for shopping and the restaurant looks awesome! The picture of the fritters makes my mouth water! We may have to go there for breakfast once and for dinner once!

Bring on more restaurant recommendations! Is there a good BBQ place?

As far as shopping is concerned, my main interest is in pottery. Mugs, vases, bowls. Any good deals? Artwork too, more like photography probably...but not expensive.

I have gone to PF/GB just about every year. I went with my parents and then 18 mo old daughter last year and we enjoyed Dollywood, as we always do. We did take advantage of the "After 3, next day free" and also if you go to Mcd's in PF they normally have at least $5 off coupons on the large drink cups and that way we saved an additional $15! I know what it's like to be on a budget!

We are going again this year and plan to buy one Gold pass and 2 regular season passes, but we will be there 12 days. :cool1:
The fireworks last year were awesome and they give out 3d glasses to watch them if you care for it. It really was a different view of any fireworks I've watched in my life. Our best view was in Timber Canyon b/w Mystery Mine and Wild Eagle.

If you have the time please do explore the National Park...we usually stay at Elkmont and will take the road that goes out the back of the park from there over to Cades Cove. It's such a pretty drive and if you have time, try to do it at different times of the day because morning and early evening are awesome! Take in a ranger talk at Sugarlands Visitor Center and see what kids programs are available during your stay. If your family is up to, a hike to one of the many waterfalls in the park is always a breathtaking site. Also, if you take 441 over the mountain to Cherokee, the Elk are usually out in abundance right at the Oconoluftee Visitor Center...they really are a majestic site in the wild.

Apple Barn is great place to visit, sadly we've never ate in the restaurant, we've only enjoyed the Ice Cream shop. Homemade Blackberry ice cream is the best!

We like to splurge and try to go to the Old Mill once every other year or so. If you can afford to do it, I would give it a try at least once. You get great portion sizes and we've never been disappointed, but we don't make it a point to go every trip if we feel the money could be spend elsewhere.

We are going to try the Lumberjack feud dinner show this trip also, but I know you don't have to do the dinner, you can just go and see the show.

The Smoky Mountain Brewery was a favorite of my husband's when we went on our honeymoon. It's right before you hit the major part of the parkway, coming into town from Sevierville on the right hand side.

There are multiple pancake houses, however we seem to enjoy one that's in GB, going up to the crafter's loop...the name escapes me and I know that doesn't help much right now, but it's on the left hand side of the street if your going up to the crafter's loop. My dad got an all you can eat pancake breakfast, and the pancake that came out was as big as his whole side of the table!! My dad is a big eater and even he didn't ask for a refill!

We have been twice to Comedy Barn and enjoy it. I believe kids are free. Dollywood isn't huge and can easily be done in the 1 1/2 day deal, especially with extended hours. We have found it the same price to eat sit down at Dollywood because it includes your drink and they are air conditioned. We always eat at the Old Mill love it and helpings are huge. Spend a day shopping in Gatlinburg on the strip. We always enjoy Roaring Forks motor trail. Pull over and climb around in the rocks and water. We have always seen bear there. Also greatly enjoy picnic area at the Chimneys, not that we eat there. Huge rocks to hop on spend a lot of time there, be prepared to get wet. We've gone 3 times in the last two years and we decided the last time we went we wouldn't spend as much and there is plenty to do. We aren't overly outdoorsy and we love to climb around these places. We enjoy Cade's Cove but it is far out there so beware! Make a day of it, pack a lunch and stop at waterfalls and creeks along the way! Christmas village is fun! We have done arcades and lazar tags and go carts but they just add up fast so we don't pick those for family trips. If you like to read and have time Titanic is great but I don't recommend for kids because its a lot of reading to make it interesting. We did do wonder works with the magic show it was nice but prob younger to pre teen. Ripley's wasn't worth the price most interesting is right there at the door. Over Gatlinburg is fun. It gets mixed reviews but we've always enjoyed it. We love the ski lift and alpine slide. It's old fun so don't go expecting a top notch place but they also have indoor ice skating. Okay enough for now.... Lol!

Hillbilly Golf was fun. You ride an incline up and golf down the mountain.
We had an excellent dinner at Bubba Gumps. Sat outside on roof top with view of main drag, waiter played Forrest Gump trivia with all of us out there. We also had a great time at Dixie Stampede. Food was good and so was the show. Our hotel had coupon for discounted tickets in the lobby. Made a trip over to Cades Cove to see bears. That was a long and grueling experience since it's a one way loop with lots of ppl stopping in middle of the road, but finally saw half a bear in a tree....if we had more time we would have gone tubing and spent more time in the National Park.

We usually travel to Pigeon Forge once a year. Last spring we visited the Deer Farm in Seiverville! DS who was 3 then loved it! In fact DH and I loved it too. If you have any kids Under 6 I would look into it! You get to feed goats, camels, zebras, reindeer, deer, it's great! And it won't break the bank!

The Apple Barn is delish as well as the Old Mill.

Love all this advice! Keep it coming!

Now the hard part is deciding what we have time and money to do. Even though our accommodations are paid (only $300 in maintenance fees) and we used airline credits for changing a flight last year (only cost $270 total using the credits.) This is still turning out to be a pricey vacation! Everything is pricey with seven of us! :rotfl: But it sure sounds fun!
I made an itinerary with everything we WANT to do and everywhere we WANT to eat and now I'm pricing things out and we'll make our cuts.

dr&momto2boys don't mean to hijack your thread! We are thinking of stopping there on the way to a wedding in Biloxi in April.

Can anyone recommend a campground there?

Thank you!

I just did a search on Pigeon Forge and this thread came up.

We are leaving a week from tomorrow to go to that area. This will be our third visit (2007 and 2010) and I'm so excited to go again. :) We've rented a cabin from Aunt Bug's. This is our first time dealing with them, hope it goes well. We rented from Sunset Accommodations the other times we've been, but I couldn't get on their web site when we were ready to book a cabin so checked Aunt Bug's and found one we really wanted to try.

We absolutely LOVE the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. But, this is the earliest in the spring that we've gone. It's always been the last week of March before, and some of the things we wanted to see and do are going to still be closed. :(

I have gone back over my reviews from our previous trips, and got visitor information books from Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville (you can order them, free, online) and have been doing a lot of research. We have several favorite restaurants we want to go back to, including Bennett's BBQ, Corky's BBQ, Huck Finn's Catfish, The Old Mill, Applewood Farmhouse, Bubba Gump's and we're planning to try The Melting Pot for our "anniversary." It will be the 39th anniversary of the night we met. And there are a couple bars we want to go to. Hogg's Upstairs Taverne in Gatlinburg is one. It used to be Hogg's and Honey's. And we want to try Dick's Last Resort, I'm looking forward to the "sarcastic" waiters, as I used to wait tables and would have loved being sarcastic to some customers! :rotfl:

Have a few other restaurants that we might want to try, but may not have enough time.

As far as activities we definitely plan to take some drives in the national park, and do some hiking to some of the waterfalls. We love the hike that goes from the visitor center back into town. We stop at a restaurant and then walk back. There are some wineries and distilleries we want to see (Bootlegger's, Barrelhouse, Ole Smokey and Sugarland), and of course do some shopping. Might do the Smoky Mountain Opry, a helicopter tour too. I want to do the Swinging Bridge Adventure at Foxfire Mountain, and the Alpine Coaster as well. The Island is a new area we haven't seen before, and we'll take a ride on the new giant Ferris wheel.

The OP mentioned pottery, we've gone to Alewine Pottery (in the Arts & Crafts community) a couple of times and I want to go back, for a lamp this time. They use leaves to make impressions in some of their pottery, it's really beautiful and unique and you can watch pottery being made too. They have a lot of other things like mugs, bowls, pitchers, vases, etc. too.

We don't plan to do any of the shows like Comedy Barn, as we've done those in the past.

With all we want to do, I hope we have time to enjoy the cabin too! :)

One more thing: OP, if you get online and send for the visitor booklets they'll send coupons too. And a lot of websites have coupons you can print as well.

Wonderful! I love the restaurant recommendations and I will definitely request the guide books. Thanks!
