I've got one of the red gate check bags, I'm not sure you'd get a double into it, or even a standard style stroller, the dimensions of the bag are long and thin, like an umbrella style stroller. My Mac single fits fine, you might get a Mac double in there, but it would be snug.
I have a double Graco Ipo. It actually folds up pretty compact. Kind of like two single umbrella strollers next to each other. I really wanted a double jogger for this trip (comfort for my boys), but I just can't imagine dragging a double jogger on the buses. Also, I'm limited since my 3 year old is a big boy (50lbs). Many limits on strollers these days are 35-40lbs per seat. I was going to get the red bag, but I think I will settle with the contractor bag and bubble wrap for the foam handles. Really not the most attractive thing, but it will do the job. I know that I am running a risk of something breaking....really REALLY hope not (the price to rent strollers is just way more than I want to pay), but it's a chance I have to take.
When we flew out I gate checked too, I just wheeled it up they asked me to fold it, make sure that you fold or it will be broken- they will throw it into the bottom, but they put a tag on and when we got off it was waiting there- the person was trying to be nice and unfold the strollers but had difficulty with some. I know I have problems opening and closing ones that aren't mine sometimes too. I didn't use a bag and won't for this trip either.
Not stupid at all. They are huge thick plastic bags used for heavy duty clean up....like when you do remodeling and stuff. Similar to a trash bag, but thick.
I think Babies R us sells cheapo stroller bags (well, I know they do , but not sure about a double) They are bright red and say gate check on them. Whatever you do, put on a luggage tag too. I bought a $50 Maclaren bag for my Maclaren only because it is so expensive. The bag has been damaged a little due to being thrown around and such so definately get some type of bag. I think even a garbage bag is better than nothing.
We use this bag for our Peg Pliko P3 and it's worked well so far. Hopefully you can find one for your double stroller. I couldn't imagine putting a stroller or carseat under the belly of a plane without something to keep it from getting dirty or wet.
